This study investigated the relationship between opportunity recognition and entrepreneurial intention at the national level. It hypothesized that the gender equality, measured based on national perceptions of women as human resources, would moderate this relationship. The data of 15 countries from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and the Gender Gap Index (GGI) of the World Economic Forum (WEF) were used for the analysis. The results showed that opportunity recognition affects entrepreneurial intention. The analysis also suggested that gender had a moderating effect on this relationship, although the size of the gender moderation effect was not directly related to the level of gender inequality in the sampled countries.

Moderating effect of gender on the opportunity recognition and entrepreneurial intention

Family and education have often been studied by numerous researchers as the factors of entrepreneurs’ creation. The research discusses the influence of background of family and education in entrepreneurship on the entrepreneurial self-efficacy in shaping the entrepreneurial intention among Chinese Indonesian Gen Z. Through the application of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), this research employed quantitative method design. This current study uses Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) analysis of 202 individuals. The finding indicates that Family Background and Entrepreneurship Education affect Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy, and Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy mediates the relationship between Family Background and Entrepreneurship Education in Entrepreneurial Intention. However, Family Background and Entrepreneurship Education do not have direct influences on Entrepreneurial Intention. Based on the finding, it can be determined that Family Background and Entrepreneurship Education will stimulate a high Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy which leads to Entrepreneurial Intention. Thus, this study suggests the stakeholder in education in Indonesia create an entrepreneurship-based system in the education curriculum to equip students with knowledge of entrepreneurship and develop the skills not only to discover the business opportunity, but also to create a sustainable one, and at the same time encouraging them to have self-confident in their capability in becoming thriving entrepreneurs. While the finding on Family Background signify that entrepreneurs are nurture, not nature since they need to be stimulated along with Entrepreneurship Education and Self-Efficacy. The limitation of this study lies in the size of the sample, thus future research is recommended to take a larger sample to get more representable data to envisage the Entrepreneurial Intention. This study provides an insight into the Entrepreneurial Intention among Chinese Indonesian Gen Z which has never been investigated in the past. Additionally, it contributes the empirical evidence of Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy role in transforming Family Background and Entrepreneurship Education into Entrepreneurial Intention.

Family Comes First: An Investigation on Entrepreneurial Intention among Chinese Indonesian Gen Z

This paper examines the impact of risk willingness and opportunity recognition on business owners’ performance in Sabah, Malaysia. The paper adopts non-probability sampling, known as a purposive sampling method, in selecting business owners. A total of 600 surveys using self-conducted questionnaires structured on a 7-point Likert scale is distributed, and subsequently, 525 questionnaires are returned. The EAO dimensions assessed in the paper are risk willingness and opportunity recognition. Data collected are analysed using the SEM-PLS technique through the SmartPLS 3.3.2 software. The study found a positive effect of risk willingness and opportunity recognition on the business owners’ performance. Accordingly, this paper’s theoretical and practical implication supports some of the previous findings and arguments that EAO plays an essential role in influencing micro-business owners’ performance.

The impact of Risk Willingness and Opportunity Recognition on Business Owners’ Performance in Sabah, Malaysia

O presente estudo objetivou analisar o papel do gênero, dos valores pessoais, da percepção dos produtores rurais e a visão dos pais como antecedentes das intenções de decisões de carreira de produtores rurais familiares e não familiares, com um histórico de negócio familiar. A pesquisa foi realizada com 202 produtores rurais com um histórico de atividade familiar. Para estimar os resultados, foi utilizada regressão multinominal logística stepwise. Os resultados indicaram que os valores pessoais de abertura a mudança, autopromoção estão positivamente associados à escolha de criar um novo negócio, enquanto o valor pessoal autotranscedência está positivamente associado a trabalhar fora do negócio familiar. Já o valor pessoal do conservadorismo mostrou aumentar a probabilidade de os produtores rurais optarem por suceder em vez de empreender. Ainda, a identificação com a empresa e a condição de trabalho dos pais mostraram aumentar a probabilidade de escolha pela sucessão ao invés de empreender. Além disso, os resultados indicaram que tanto a preferência dos pais quanto a preparação feita por eles influenciam a escolha pela sucessão ao invés de empreender. Conclui-se desta forma que os valores pessoais estão associados à escolha de criar um novo negócio, suceder e trabalhar fora do negócio familiar. As percepções dos produtores rurais estão associadas à escolha pela sucessão, e a visão dos pais está associada à escolha por suceder.

This study aims to explore factors that improving entrepreneurial opportunity recognition. The study found three factors are family background, individual desire, and education which measures the elements that improving entrepreneurial opportunity recognition. The factor will be evaluated through quantitative methods enable student entrepreneurs to generate more business ideas that are more innovative and viable. This component article introduces the discoveries of the investigation, and examines potential consequences and remedies.

Factor improving entrepreneurial opportunity recognition for graduate entrepreneur

Opportunity recognition is the first nascent step towards entrepreneurship. Previous study shows that gender and family business exposure plays a significant role for entrepreneurs to start a business.  The objective of this study is to find out if there is any difference in opportunity recognition based on gender and family business background. The sample size of this study is 413 students who are taking the Entrepreneurial Global Innovation subject in the fourth semester at Universitas Ciputra Surabaya, comprising 234 males and 179 females. The data was taken at the end of the semester which also coincided with the pandemic covid-19 situation. The data that has been collected is analyzed using independent sample t-test. The result of the study reveals that there is a difference in opportunity recognition between students with family business backgrounds and students without family business background. The other result of this study is that there is no difference in opportunity recognition between male and female.This study contributes to entrepreneurship education especially in term of opportunity recognition and how it is differ between students who have family business background and those who don’t. Further research needs to be done to ascertain whether gender equality in entrepreneurship has actually been achieved.
