This paper analyses how five Nigerian newspapers framed the fight against corruption embarked upon by the Buhari administration one year after his assumption of office (May 29, 2016). Using newspaper editorials published on Nigeria’s Democracy Day as unit of analysis, it draws on the methodological context of equivalent framing to demonstrate how the selected newspapers have framed the war against corruption which was the major thrust of the ‘Change’ campaign message articulated by Buhari as a Presidential aspirant and his political party (All Progressives’ Congress), during the build-up to the landmark 2015 general elections in Nigeria. Findings suggest that the Nigerian Press position on national issues, like the anti-corruption war, is subject to ethnic influence and political ownership as revealed by the ‘uncompromising frame’ and the ‘witch-hunting frame.’

This paper examines the influence of news credibility on the corporate image of broadcast media in Nigeria. The paper was anchored on the preliminary assumption that a relationship exists between the credibility of the news a media disseminated and how the public perceives it. Source Credibility Theory and Perception Theory were used as its theoretical framework. A Survey of 375 respondents, the eventual outcome of distributed 400 copies of the questionnaire provided evidence that the public confidence in government owned broadcast media is low compared to the private broadcast media as a direct consequence of the level of credibility of the news they disseminate. The paper recommends that broadcast media should always support the promotion of credible news in order to improve on their public perception.

Influence of News Credibility on Public Perception of the Broadcast Media in Nigeria

. The study was conducted to determine the extent to which radio political campaign messages influence voters' behaviour during elections. The study also examined the influence of other political campaign techniques used by political parties to influence voters' decisions in their favour. The study determined whether frequent exposure to both pro and against candidates' radio political campaign messages influenced voters' decisions on election day and also investigated the extent of the influence of opinion leaders among voters during elections. The study examined the descriptive survey; the sample population was 400 respondents who were residents in a random sampling technique in Lagos. The instrument used for the data analysis was frequency count and simple percentage. Findings from the study show that radio in Nigeria helps in political participation by motivating citizens to vote and be present for manifesto reading, unbiased in their choice of candidates, etc. It encourages people to attend rallies and be informed about the decision-making process, which is very important in the electoral process. In summary, this study sheds light on the impact of radio political campaign messages and other campaign techniques on voters' behaviour during elections. It underscores the importance of radio in promoting political participation, unbiased decision-making, and informed choices among voters. However, caution should be exercised to avoid negative influences such as sentimentalism, ethnic bias, and religious bigotry, which can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and harm society.

The Influence of Political Advertising on the Voting Patterns of Rural Residents in Electoral Processes: A Study on the Role of Radio Campaigns

This study focuses on the role of media ownership on the press coverage of the 2015 presidential election campaign in Nigeria. Using content analysis, the aim of the study was to identify the themes and examine the direction of the coverage of election campaign news items between the two main political parties in the country-Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) published in The Nation on one hand and the Nigerian Tribune on the other hand, between January 2015 and March 2015. Findings from the study indicate coverage replete with biases, although with some remarkable incidents of objectivity and balancing, and show that the two newspapers analysed in this study merely reflected the political leanings of their respective publishers. Este estudo se centra no papel da propriedade da midia na cobertura jornalistica das eleicoes presidenciais de 2015 na Nigeria. Por meio de analise de conteudo, seu objetivo e identificar os temas e examinar os direcionamentos dos itens noticiosos relacionados a cobertura da campanha ente os dois principais partidos do pais – Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) e o All Progressives Congress (APC) – e que foram publicados entre janeiro e marco de 2015 nos jornais The Natione Nigerian Tribune. Os resultados do estudo apontam para uma cobertura repleta de vieses, apesar de alguns incidentes relevantes de objetividade e de equilibrio, e mostram que os dois jornais analisados simplesmente refletem os direcionamentos politicos de seus respectivos proprietarios. Este estudio se centra en el papel de la propiedad de los medios en la cobertura de prensa de las campanas electorales presidenciales de 2015 en Nigeria. Utilizando analisis de contenido, el objetivo del estudio fue identificar los temas y examinar el direccionamiento de la cobertura y de las noticias sobre la campana electoral entre los dos principales partidos politicos del pais: el Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) y o All Progressives Congress (APC), publicadas en The Nation y en el Nigerian Tribune, entre enero de 2015 y marzo de 2015. Las encuestas de estudio indican una cobertura repleta de vieses, aunque con algunos incidentes relevantes de objetividad y  equilibrio, y muestra que los dos periodicos analizados reflejan simplemente las directrices de los respectivos propietarios.

Influencing the Message: The Role of Media Ownership on the Press Coverage of the 2015 Presidential Electoral Campaign in Nigeria

Media ownership pattern and content also known as allegiance, loyalty and servitude. The dominant ownership of broadcast media by governments both at the State and Federal levels does not portent well for the country’s democracy. Aladeodunewu (1985) writes “the stark truth is that every medium is in varying degrees “shackled” to its set of overlords and … its policy is largely determined by the personal spites and ambitions of its proprietors”. Further, Dokun, B. (1987) puts it that, the private owned media operators ensure that their interest, which is mainly financial or political or both are met through their publications and broadcasts. Therefore, this study seeks to unraveal the relationship and understanding between the governments owned media and threats to democracy, and how such has affected the media contents in Nigeria.
