Electrochemical energy storage technology is based on devices capable of exhibiting high energy density (batteries) or high power density (electrochemical capacitors). There is a growing need, for current and near-future applications, where both high energy and high power densities are required in the same material. Pseudocapacitance, a faradaic process involving surface or near surface redox reactions, offers a means of achieving high energy density at high charge–discharge rates. Here, we focus on the pseudocapacitive properties of transition metal oxides. First, we introduce pseudocapacitance and describe its electrochemical features. Then, we review the most relevant pseudocapacitive materials in aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes. The major challenges for pseudocapacitive materials along with a future outlook are detailed at the end.

Ultra-high-rate pseudocapacitive energy storage in two-dimensional transition metal carbides

The ever-increasing demand of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) caused by the rapid development of various electronics and electric vehicles will be hindered by the limited lithium resource. Thus sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have been considered as a promising potential alternative for LIBs owing to the abundant sodium resource and similar electrochemical performances. In recent years, significant achievements regarding anode materials which restricted the development of SIBs in the past decades have been attained. Significantly, the sodium storage feasibility of carbon materials with abundant resource, low cost, nontoxicity and high safety has been confirmed, and extensive investigation have demonstrated that the carbonaceous materials can become promising electrode candidates for SIBs. In this review, the recent progress of the sodium storage performances of carbonaceous materials, including graphite, amorphous carbon, heteroatom-doped carbon, and biomass derived carbon, are presented and the related sodium storage mechanism is also summarized. Additionally, the critical issues, challenges and perspectives are provided to further understand the carbonaceous anode materials.

Carbon Anode Materials for Advanced Sodium-Ion Batteries

It is of great interest to develop new carbon-based materials as electrodes for supercapacitors because the conventional electrodes of activated carbons in supercapacitors cannot meet the ever-increasing demands for high energy and power densities for electronic devices. Due to their high electronic conductivity and improved hydrophilic properties, together with their easy syntheses and functionalization, N-doped carbons have shown a great potential in energy storage and conversion applications. In this review, after a brief introduction of electrochemical capacitors, we summarize the advances, in the recent six years, in the preparation methods of N-doped carbons for applications in supercapacitors. We also discuss and predict futuristic research trends towards the design and syntheses of N-doped carbons with unique properties for electrochemical energy storage.

Review on recent advances in nitrogen-doped carbons: preparations and applications in supercapacitors

Hard carbons are considered among the most promising anode materials for Na-ion batteries. Understanding their structure is of great importance for optimizing their Na storage capabilities and therefore achieving high performance. Herein, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are prepared by electrospinning and their microstructure, texture, and surface functionality are tailored through carbonization at various temperatures ranging from 650 to 2800 degrees C. Stepwise carbonization gradually removes the heteroatoms and increases the graphitization degree, enabling us to monitor the corresponding electrochemical performance for establishing a correlation between the CNFs characteristics and Na storage behavior. Outstandingly, it is found that for CNFs carbonized at above 2000 degrees C, a single voltage Na uptake plateau at similar or equal to 0.1 V with a capacity of similar or equal to 200 mAh g(-1). This specific performance may be nested in the higher degree of graphitization, lower active surface area, and different porous texture of the CNFs at such temperatures. It is demonstrated via the assembly of a CNF/Na2Fe2(SO4)(3) cell the benefit of such CNFs electrode for enhancing the energy density of full Na-ion cells. This finding sheds new insights in the quest for high performance carbon based anode materials.

Correlation Between Microstructure and Na Storage Behavior in Hard Carbon

RuO 2 -based mesoporous thin films of optical quality are synthesized from ruthenium-peroxo-based sols using micelle templates made of amphiphilic polystyrene-polyethylene oxide block copolymers. The mesoporous structure and physical properties of the RuO 2 films (mesoporous volume: 30%; pore diameter: ∼30 nm) can be controlled by the careful tuning of both the precursor solution and thermal treatment (150―350 °C). The optimal temperature that allows control of both mesoporosity and nanocristallinity is strongly dependent on the substrate (silicon or fluorine-doped tin oxide). The structure of the resulting mesoporous films are investigated using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Mesoporous layers are additionally characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy and ellipsometry while their electrochemical properties are analyzed via cyclic voltammetry. Thick mesoporous films of ruthenium oxide hydrates, RuO 2 · xH 2 O, obtained using a thermal treatment at 280 °C, exhibit capacitances as high as 1000 ± 100 F g ―1 at a scan rate of 10 mV s ―1 , indicating their potential application as electrode materials.
