Geolocation by light: accuracy and precision affected by environmental factors
Simeon Lisovski,Chris M. Hewson,Raymond H. G. Klaassen,Fraenzi Korner-Nievergelt,Mikkel Willemoes Kristensen,Steffen Hahn +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the influence of different calibration methods on the accuracy of the latitudinal positions of geolocators, and demonstrated their effect on the measurement of day and night length, time of solar midnight ⁄ noon and the resulting position estimates using light measurements from stationary geolocalators at known places and from geocators mounted on birds.

Population decline is linked to migration route in the Common Cuckoo.
TL;DR: Common Cuckoos use two distinct routes to reach the same wintering grounds, allowing assessment of survival during migration independently of origin and destination, and the proportion of birds using this route strongly correlates with population decline across nine local breeding populations.
Weak effects of geolocators on small birds: A meta-analysis controlled for phylogeny and publication bias.

TL;DR: A weak effect on apparent survival of tagged birds is found and key aspects and drivers of tagging effects are pinpointed, which encourage further use of geolocators on small bird species but the ethical aspects and scientific benefits should always be considered.
Population trends of breeding birds in British woodlands over a 32‐year period: relationships with food, habitat use and migratory behaviour
Chris M. Hewson,David G. Noble +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the possible causes of these population trends by relating the ecological characteristics of species to the degree of population change they have undergone over different time periods and found that long-distance migrants showed more negative trends than other species and the timing of the changes in their populations was related to their wintering latitude.
