Theory suggests that habitat structure and population density profoundly influence the phenotypic development of animals. Here, we predicted that reduced rearing density and increased structural complexity promote food search ability, anti-predator response and the ability to forage on novel prey, all behavioural skills important for surviving in the wild. Brown trout were reared at three densities (conventional hatchery density, a fourth of conventional hatchery density and natural density) in tanks with or without structure. Treatment effects on behaviour were studied on trout fry and parr, whereupon 20 trout from each of the six treatment groups were released in an enclosed natural stream and recaptured after 36 days. Fry reared at natural density were faster to find prey in a maze. Moreover, parr reared at natural density were faster to eat novel prey, and showed more efficient anti-predator behaviour than fish reared at higher densities. Furthermore, parr reared at reduced densities were twice as likely to survive in the stream as trout reared at high density. In contrast, we found no clear treatment effects of structure. These novel results suggest that reduced rearing densities can facilitate the development of behavioural life skills in captive animals, thereby increasing their contribution to natural production.

Up to date, self-regulation learning has emerged in several areas of knowledge not only as a multidisciplinary, but also as an interdisciplinary research such as philosophy, psychology, cognitive science and motivational learning This article involves two parts The first one is an analytical study which aims towards understanding self-organisation through analysis of the effect and contribution of self-regulation on self-organisation by considering the answer of two questions The first question is: Why naming one definition and model of self-regulation is complex? And, the second is: How self-regulation contributes to self-organisation? The base of raising these questions is what has been reported out by Boekaerts and Corno (2005) concerning self-regulation in the classrooms is that "There is no simple and straightforward definition of the construct of self-regulated learning" The analysis came up with the conclusion that self-organisation is the sum of all self-regulations The second part of this article is an observational results of some common experimental instructions (do's and don'ts) that the author used with 103 children less than seven years young (range = 2-6 years) This analysis is one of the results of a pilot study that the author ran as a part of his PhD research The primary purpose of the observational results is to answer the question: To what extent does this instruction valuable to keep children acting during task performance? The importance of answering this question is that the amount of self-regulation is strongly influenced by the amount of external control, ie the more external control leads to less self-regulation and vice versa and the results showed that (1) the proposed do's and don'ts instructions are not as they expected to be and minimising the external control requires the researchers in different areas of knowledge to develop a cohesive set of experimental instructions that help the external regulators to minimise their control upon children and (2) the complexity of the self-organisation acquisition is emphatically influenced by the difficulty of the self-regulation acquisition

Towards understanding self-organisation: How self-regulation contributes to self-organisation?

The focus of this research is group interaction aimed at obtaining the “living knowledge” as an educational product. The dynamics of interactive classes on the development of students’ creative activity was structured into three parts as follows: Creation of a “relaxed attention situation”; Creation of a “situation of immersion in the collective creative experience”; Creation of an “active assessment situation”. Thanks to this structure, a scheme of an ideal learning situation at various stages of a class was created. The theory of self-organization in nonequilibrium systems (by Ilya Prigogine) was reconsidered in a new humanitarian context. The principles of self-organization in educational systems were determined through the author’s interactive educational techniques for developing students’ creative activity. The interactive and synergistic approaches were chosen as the key ones and applied as a methodological foundation of this work. The author of this research is the developer of the interactive approach. In this study, the author relied mainly on the theory of self-organization (synergetics) developed by Hermann Haken and Ilya Prigogine.

Introduction Humans are rather funny things, we often tend to imagine that we are so ‘special’, so divorced by our supposed ‘intelligence’ from the influences of the ‘natural world’ and so unique in our ‘abstracting’ abilities. We have this persistent delusion, evident since ancient Greek times, that we are ‘rational’, that we can behave as ‘disinterested observers’ of our world, which manifests in AI thought today in a belief that, in a like manner, we can ‘design’, God like, from afar, our replacements, those ‘super-robots’ that will do everything that we can imagine doing, but in much ‘better’ ways than we can achieve, and yet can avoid doing anything ‘nasty’, i.e. can overcome our many human failings obeying, I suppose, in the process, Asimov’s three ‘laws of robotics’. Such human naivete proves, in fact, to be quite amusing, at least to those of us ‘schooled’ in AI history. When we look at the aspirations and the expectations of our early ‘pioneers’, and compare them to the actual reality of today, then we must, it seems, re-discover the meaning of the word ‘humility’. Enthusiasm, good as it may be, needs to be moderated with a touch of ‘common sense’, and if our current ways of doing things in our AI world don’t really work as we had hoped, then perhaps it is time to try something different (Lucas, C., 1999)?
