In this paper we examine the emergence and evolution of computer crime and computer forensics, as well as the crisis computer forensics is now facing. We propose new directions and approaches which better reflect the current objectives of this discipline. We further discuss important challenges that this discipline will be facing in the near future, and we propose an approach more suitable to prepare for these challenges. We focus on the technical aspects, while at the same time providing insights which would be helpful to better understand the unique issues related to computer forensic evidence when presented in the court of law.

Event-Driven Communication in Smart Grid

The hybrid scheme of electricity metering combining time- and event-driven approaches makes visible events. It enables the detection, understanding, and management of nonstationary flows of electricity as they vary by real-life processes. We use the internal metering data to supply electric values and additional meta-information being elicited, e.g., scalar values characterizing variations of power flows and their timing. The capability to recognize events and their sequences produces new information flows in smart grids. We discuss how to exploit the process knowledge in the grid's control.

Economics of Big Data: A Value Perspective on State of the Art and Future Trends

The paper summarizes the current status of the technical supporting systems in the control centers and substations of China Southern Power Grid (CSG). Smart grid applications can be, based on functional integration and data sharing, developed for the operation of complicated power grids. A brand new conceptual model of next generation system, named Operation Smart System (OS2), is proposed. OS2 provides an integrated framework that integrates all functionalities of the current systems in control centers and substations. These functionalities act as modules and are linked with an open and standardized service bus, called Operational Service Bus (OSB). The definition, principles, technical architecture, modules, and key technologies of OS2 are discussed in detail. A case study on a prototype system of power system operation cockpit (POC) demonstrates the feasibility of the system framework and the key technologies. It is believed that the research and development of OS2 will significantly benefit the grid operation of CSG.
