The ELENA facility

The Extra Low Energy Antiproton ring (ELENA) is a CERN project aiming at constructing a small 30 m circumference synchrotron to further decelerate antiprotons from the Antiproton Decelerator AD from 5.3 MeV to 100 keV. Controlled deceleration in a synchrotron equipped with an electron cooler to reduce emittances in all three planes will allow the existing AD experiments to increase substantially their antiproton capture efficiencies and render new experiments possible. The ELENA design is now well advanced and the project is moving to the implementation phase. Component design and construction are taking place at present for installation foreseen during the second half of 2015 and beginning of 2016 followed by ring commissioning until the end of 2016. New electrostatic transfer lines to the experiments will be installed and commissioned during the first half of 2017 followed by the first physics operation with ELENA. Basic limitations like Intra Beam Scattering limiting the emittances obtained under electron cooling and direct space charge effects are reviewed and the status of the project is reported.

Extra Low ENergy Antiproton ring ELENA: From the Conception to the Implementation Phase

Storage rings have been employed over three decades in various kinds of nuclear and atomic physics experiments with highly charged ions. Storage ring operation and precision physics experiments benefit from the availability of beam cooling which is common to nearly all facilities. The basic aspects of the storage ring components and the operation of the ring in various ion-optical modes as well as the achievable beam conditions are described. Ion storage rings offer unparalleled capabilities for high precision experiments with stable and radioactive beams. The versatile techniques and methods for beam manipulations allow for preparing beams of highest quality at any energy of interest. The rings are therefore part of the experiment . Recent experiments conducted in a wide energy range and with various experimental installations are discussed. An overview of active and planned facilities, new experimental set-ups and proposed physics experiments completes this review.

Heavy-Ion Storage Rings and Their Use in Precision Experiments with Highly Charged Ions

Die vorliegende Arbeit ist ein Beitrag zum ASACUSA (Atomic Spectroscopy And Collisions Using Slow Antiprotons) Experiment mit dem Ziel der Messung der Hyperfeinstruktur von Antiwasserstoff mittels eines Rabi Aufbaus. Dieser Aufbau besteht aus einer Antiwasserstoffquelle, einem Hohlraumresonator, einem Sextupol Magneten sowie einem Detektor. Der Hohlraumresonator hat die Funktion die einzelnen hyperfeinen Ubergange des Antiwasserstoffs im Grundzustand anzuregen, wahrend der Sextupol Magnet dazu dient, die Antiwasserstoffatome entsprechend ihres Spins zu selektieren.
Solch ein Aufbau ermoglicht eine hochprazise Messung der Hyperfein-Ubergangsfrequenzen im Antiwasserstoffatom. Ein Vergleich dieser mit den entsprechenden Ubergangen in Wasserstoff bietet die Moglichkeit, die CPT (charge-parity-time) Symmetrie mit sehr hoher Genauigkeit zu uberprufen.
Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde das Herzstuck dieses Aufbaus, der Hohlraumresonator entworfen und gebaut. Die Schwierigkeit des Designs eines geeigneten Resonators lag in den extremen Anforderungen an die Feldhomogenitat: Um eine genugend grose Auflosung der Ubergangsfrequenz sicherzustellen, muss das oszilierende Feld im Inneren des Resonators uber die gesamte Strahlapertur (ca. 1000 cm3, Wellenlange 21 cm) eine Feldhomogenitat von uber 90% aufweisen. Auserdem ist es erforderlich, dem Mikrowellenfeld ein statisches Magnetfeld zu uberlagern, um unkontrollierte Ubergange (sog. Majorana spin-flips) zwischen den Hyperfeinniveaus zu vermeiden.
Ebenso wie das oszillierende Feld unterliegt das statische Feld strikten Anforderungen an die Feldhomogenitat.
Der Entwurf sowie die praktische Umsetzung eines statischen Feldes, das den obgenannten Bedingungen genugt, wurde ebenfalls im Rahmen dieser Arbeit durchgefuhrt. Des weiteren wurde eine effiziente magnetische Abschirmung zur Dampfung externer Streufelder untersucht und implementiert. Zusammen mit einer allgemeinen Einleitung, den entsprechenden theoretischen Grundlagen und einer Beschreibung der Komponenten des Rabi Aufbaus, werden diese Ergebnisse im Kontext der vorliegenden Arbeit prasentiert.

In view of a possible future physics programme concerning antihydrogen, a simplified scheme for the provision of antiprotons of a few MeV has been studied. It uses the present target area and the modified Antiproton Collector (AC) in its present location. In this report all the systems are reviewed and their modifications discussed.
