Creating Web processes using Web service technology gives us the opportunity for selecting new services, which best suit our need at the moment. Doing this automatically requires us to quantify our criteria for selection. In addition, there are challenging issues of correctness and optimality. We present a constraint driven Web service composition tool in METEOR-S, which allows the process designers to bind Web services to an abstract process, based on business and process constraints and generate an executable process. Our approach is to reduce much of the service composition problem to a constraint satisfaction problem. It uses a multiphase approach for constraint analysis. This work was done as part of the METEORS framework, which aims to support the complete lifecycle of semantic Web processes.

Current workflow management systems still lack support for dynamic and automatic workflow adaptations. However, this functionality is a major requirement for next-generation workflow systems to provide sufficient flexibility to cope with unexpected failure events. We present the concepts and implementation of AGENTWORK, a workflow management system supporting automated workflow adaptations in a comprehensive way. A rule-based approach is followed to specify exceptions and necessary workflow adaptations. AGENTWORK uses temporal estimates to determine which remaining parts of running workflows are affected by an exception and is able to predictively perform suitable adaptations. This helps to ensure that necessary adaptations are performed in time with minimal user interaction which is especially valuable in complex applications such as for medical treatments.

AGENT WORK: a workflow system supporting rule-based workflow adaptation

Current workflow management systems fall short of supporting large-scale distributed, enterprise-wide applications. We present a scalable, rigorously founded approach to enterprise-wide workflow management, based on the distributed execution of state and activity charts. By exploiting the formal semantics of state and activity charts, we develop an algorithm for transforming a centralized state and activity chart into a provably equivalent partitioned one, suitable for distributed execution. A synchronization scheme is developed that guarantees an execution equivalent to a non-distributed one. This basic solution is further refined in order to reduce communication overhead and exploit parallelism between partitions whenever possible. The developed synchronization schemes are compared in terms of the number and size of synchronization messages.

From Centralized Workflow Specification to Distributed WorkflowExecution

In this paper, defeasible workflow is proposed as a framework to support exception handling for workflow management. By using the “justified” ECA rules to capture more contexts in workflow modeling, defeasible workflow uses context dependent reasoning to enhance the exception handling capability of workflow management systems. In particular, this limits possible alternative exception handler candidates in dealing with exceptional situations. Furthermore, a case-based reasoning (CBR) mechanism with integrated human involvement is used to improve the exception handling capabilities. This involves collecting cases to capture experiences in handling exceptions, retrieving similar prior exception handling cases, and reusing the exception handling experiences captured in those cases in new situations.

Web services are in the midst of making the transition from being a promising technology to being widely used in the industry. However, most efforts to use Web services have been manual, thus slowing down the ever changing and dynamic businesses of today. In this paper, we contend that more expressive descriptions of Web services will lead to greater automation and thus provide more agility to businesses. We present the METEOR-S front-end tools for source code annotation and semantic Web service description generation. We also present WSDL-S, a language created for incorporating semantic descriptions in the industry wide accepted WSDL, by extending WSDL 2.0.

The rapidly evolving managed healthcare industry requires efficient coordination of human and automated tasks as well as information-flow across multiple enterprises. One of the most critical applications in managed care is state-wide immunization tracking, which if supported by appropriate workflow technology can achieve substantial near term impact. In this paper, we discuss a comprehensive and real-world application to support child immunization tracking for the state of Connecticut in close collaboration with CHREFl. The application system uses UGA-LSDIS’s2 multi-paradigm transactional workflow management system METEOR:!.
