The rapid urbanization and industrialization is causing worldwide water pollution, calling for advanced cleaning methods. For instance, pollutant adsorption on magnetic oxides is efficient and very practical due to the easy separation from solutions by an magnetic field. Here we review the synthesis and performance of magnetic oxides such as iron oxides, spinel ferrites, and perovskite oxides for water remediation. We present structural, optical, and magnetic properties. Magnetic oxides are also promising photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants. Antimicrobial activities and adsorption of heavy metals and radionucleides are also discussed.

In view of the numerous environmental hazards and health challenges linked to sulfur (iv) oxide (SO2), an indirect greenhouse gas, and the resultant need to develop efficient gas nanosensor devices, this research had as its principal focus on the theoretical evaluation of the gas sensing potential of metals: Ag, Au and Cu functionalized silicon-doped quantum dots (Si@QD) for the detection and adsorption of SO2 gas investigated using the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) computation at the B3LYP-D3(BJ)/def2-SVP level of theory. Eight (8) possible adsorption modes: SO2_O_Si@QD, SO2_O_Ag_Si@QD, SO2_O_Au_Si@QD, SO2_O_Cu_Si@QD, SO2_S_Si@QD, SO2_S_Ag_Si@QD, SO2_S_Au_Si@QD, and SO2_S_Cu_Si@QD were considered based on SO2 interactions with the studied materials at the -S and -O sites of the SO2 molecule. The counterpoise correction (BSSE) showed that five of the eight interactions had favorable Ead + BSSE values ranging from -0.31 to -1.98 eV. All the eight interactions were observed to be thermodynamically favorable with ΔG and ΔH ranging from -129.01 to -200.24 kcal/mol and -158.26 to -229.73 kcal/mol respectively. Results from the topology analysis reveal that van der Waals forces occurred the greatest at the gas-sensor interphase while SO2_S_ Cu_Si@QD is predicted to have the highest sensing potency based on the conductivity and recovery time estimations. These results confirm the potential efficient feasibility of real-world device application of the metals (Ag, Au, Cu) functionalized Si-doped QDs. 

Molecular simulation of Cu, Ag, and Au-decorated Si-doped graphene quantum dots (Si@QD) nanostructured as sensors for SO2 trapping

Energy storage has always been a major concern in the present-day situation. Advanced energy storage devices are batteries, supercapacitor and solar cells. However, advancements have been noteworthy in the field of high-performance hybrid supercapacitors. On this note, we have fabricated a hybrid supercapacitor electrode material Potassium tantalate nano cube (KT NCs) and its reduced graphene oxide composite (KT-rGO NCs) and tested its electrochemical performance. The materials showed high performances with specific capacitance of 565 F/g for KT NCs and 850 F/g for KT-rGO NCs respectively. Energy densities of both KT NCs & KT-rGO NCs are 28.24 Wh/Kg and 29.50 Wh/kg with good retention capacities. Further detailed study of both KT NCs and KT-rGO NCs are carried out with characterization techniques like XRD, FTIR, BET, Raman and HRTEM for structural analysis and electrochemical measurements to analyse various parameters pertaining to its charge storage capacity.

Density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the interaction of gas molecules, including SO2 and SO3 with Na-functionalized C3B monolayers. Firstly, the electronic and geometric properties of Na-adsorbed C3B monolayers were examined to search for the most stable metal functionalized C3B based systems. The Na adatoms prefer the hollow site of the C-hexagon of C3B monolayer. Based on the charge density difference calculations, the electronic densities were depleted on the adsorbed Na metals. Thus, the adsorbed Na metals behave as charge donors. Contrary to the pure C3B monolayer with semiconducting property, the Na-adsorbed systems represent metallic character. The considered SO2 and SO3 gas molecules were adsorbed on the metal site of Na-functionalized C3B nanosheets through weak chemical bonds, which indicates the promising media for gas sensing and adsorption. The effects of van der Waals (vdW) interactions were taken into account for the adsorption of gas molecules on the considered C3B sheets. Thus, our results showed that Na-functionalized C3B sheet is a suitable material for gas sensing in the environment.

Enhanced SOx sensing performance of BC3 nanosheets functionalized with Na atoms: A first-principles study

Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum(GGEC), the dried gizzard membrane of Gallus gallus domesticus is a Chinese medicinal material commonly used for digestion. However, due to the particularity of texture and composition, its active ingre-dients have not been clarified so far, and there is also a lack of quality evaluation indicators. In this study, UPLC-Q-TOF-MS was used to analyze the chemical components from the water extract of GGEC, and ten nucleosides were identified for the first time. HPLC fingerprints of the water extracts of GGEC were established and the content of seven nucleosides was determined. The fingerprint similarities of 40 batches of GGEC samples ranged from 0.765 to 0.959, indicating that there were great differences among the GGEC products processed with different methods. In addition, SPSS 22.0 and SIMCA 14.1 were used for hierarchical cluster analysis(HCA) and principal component analysis(PCA) on the 19 common peaks of the HPLC fingerprints of GGEC, and the 40 batches of samples were divided into three categories: raw GGEC, fried GGEC and vinegar-processed GGEC. Eight differential components in GGEC were marked by orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis(OPLS-DA), two of which were adenine and thymine. The results of content determination showed that the total content of the seven nucleosides in raw GGEC, fried GGEC and vinegar-processed GGEC were 182.5-416.8, 205.3-368.7, and 194.2-283.0 μg·g~(-1), respectively. There were significant differences in the content of hypoxanthine, thymine and thymidine among the GGEC products processed with different methods(P<0.05), which were graded in the order of fried GGEC>vinegar-processed GGEC>raw GGEC. This suggested that the content of hypoxanthine, thymine and thymidine tended to increase during the frying process, and the variation range might be related to the degree of heat exposure. The established methods in this study were simple and reproducible, and could be used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of GGEC and its processed pro-ducts. This study also provided reference for the establishment of quality standards of GGEC with chemical components as control index.

[Quality evaluation of Galli Gigerii Endothelium Corneum based on HPLC fingerprints and content determination of nucleosides].

Meconopsis Vig. is a genus possessing important medicinal and ornamental values in the Papaveraceae. Many species in this genus are commonly used in traditional Tibetan medicines over thousands of years. In this study, we reported the complete chloroplast genome sequence of Meconopsis punicea. Total lengths of the chloroplast genomes were 152,933 bp. The genome had typical quadripartite structure, LSC region (83,031 bp) and SSC region (17,920 bp) were separated by a pair of IRs (25,991 bp), respectively. Moreover, they were composed of 131 genes, including 86 protein coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, 8 rRNA genes and one pseudogene. Phylogenetic analysis based on complete chloroplast genomes showed that M. integrifolia had closer relationship with M. punicea; meanwhile, Meconopsis was closely related to Papaver in Papaveraceae.
