A novel finger and hand pose estimation technique for real-time hand gesture recognition

Hand gestures recognition (HGR) is one of the main areas of research for the engineers, scientists and bioinformatics. HGR is the natural way of Human Machine interaction and today many researchers in the academia and industry are working on different application to make interactions more easy, natural and convenient without wearing any extra device. HGR can be applied from games control to vision enabled robot control, from virtual reality to smart home systems. In this paper we are discussing work done in the area of hand gesture recognition where focus is on the intelligent approaches including soft computing based methods like artificial neural network, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms etc. The methods in the preprocessing of image for segmentation and hand image construction also taken into study. Most researchers used fingertips for hand detection in appearance based modeling. Finally the comparison of results given by different researchers is also presented.

Intelligent Approaches to interact with Machines using Hand Gesture Recognition in Natural way: A Survey

Hand gestures are an integral part of communication. In several scenarios hand gestures play a vital role by virtue of them being the only means of communication. For example hand signals by a traffic policeman, news reader on TV gesturing news for the deaf, signalling in airport for navigating aircrafts, playing games etc. So, there is a need for robust hand pose recognition (HPR) which can find utility in such applications. The existing state-of-the-art methods are challenged due to clutter in the background. We propose a deep learning framework to recognise hand gestures robustly. Specifically we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) to identify hand postures despite variation in hand sizes, spatial location in the image and clutter in the background. The advantage of our method is that there is no need for feature extraction. Without explicitly segmenting foreground the proposed CNN learns to recognise the hand pose even in presence of complex, varying background or illumination. We provide experimental results demonstrating superior performance of the proposed algorithm on state-of-the-art datasets.

Deep Gesture: Static Hand Gesture Recognition Using CNN

Hand gesture is one of the most intuitive and natural ways for human to communicate with computers, and it has been widely adopted in many human–computer interaction applications. However, it is still a challenging problem when confronted with complex background, illumination variation and occlusion in real-world scenarios. In this paper, a two-stage hand gesture recognition method is proposed to tackle these problems. At the first stage, hand pose estimation is developed to locate the hand keypoints using the convolutional pose machine, which can effectively localize hand keypoints even in a complex background. At the second stage, the Fuzzy Gaussian mixture models (FGMMs) are tailored to reject the nongesture patterns and classify the gestures based on the estimated hand keypoints. Extensive experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, and the result demonstrates that the proposed algorithm is effective, robust, and satisfactory in real-time scenarios.
