Focus on Bioinspired Textured Surfaces toward Fluid Drag Reduction: Recent Progresses and Challenges

Titanium and titanium alloys are used as artificial bone substitutes due to the good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, and are widely applied in the treatment of bone defects in clinic. However, Pure titanium has stress shielding effect on bone, and the effect of titanium-based materials on promoting bone healing is not significant. To solve this problem, several studies have proposed that the surface of titanium-based implants can be modified to generate micro or nano structures and improve mechanical properties, which will have positive effects on bone healing. This article reviews the application and characteristics of several titanium processing methods, and explores the effects of different technologies on the surface characteristics, mechanical properties, cell behavior and osseointegration. The future research prospects in this field and the characteristics of ideal titanium-based implants are proposed.

Surface Modification Techniques to Produce Micro/Nano-scale Topographies on Ti-Based Implant Surfaces for Improved Osseointegration

Limitations associated with conventional bone substitutes such as autografts, increasing demand for bone grafts, and growing elderly population worldwide necessitate development of unique materials as bone graft substitutes. Bone tissue engineering (BTE) would ensure therapy advancement, efficiency, and cost-effective treatment modalities of bone defects. One way of engineering bone tissue scaffolds by mimicking natural bone tissue composed of organic and inorganic phases is to utilize polysaccharide-bioceramic hybrid composites. Polysaccharides are abundant in nature, and present in human body. Biominerals, like hydroxyapatite are present in natural bone and some of them possess osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties. Ion doped bioceramics could substitute protein-based biosignal molecules to achieve osteogenesis, vasculogenesis, angiogenesis, and stress shielding. This review is a systemic summary on properties, advantages, and limitations of polysaccharide-bioceramic/ion doped bioceramic composites along with their recent advancements in BTE. 

Polysaccharide-bioceramic composites for bone tissue engineering: A review.

The use of cutting-edge techniques is beneficial for the research and development of biomaterials and the production of new sustainable biomaterials. Eco-friendly biomaterials should be promoted. As prospective substitutes for conventional materials, a variety of biomaterials have been conceived and produced to date and successfully used in various biomedical disciplines. The sustainability component in the additive manufacturing of biomaterials is the main goal of this article. There is discussion of various metallic biomaterials, including titanium, stainless steel, magnesium, cobalt-chromium alloy, zinc, tantalum etc. The effects of several additive manufacturing techniques on sustainability are examined. Also, the properties of additive manufactured biomaterials and sustainability aspect of biomaterials are discussed in detail. By reducing material waste and using time and energy efficiently, additive manufacturing can assist to lower costs and having less harmful effects on the environment. This article discussed sustainability aspects of different additive manufacturing techniques used for manufacturing of biomaterials. 

Additive manufacturing of metallic biomaterials: sustainability aspect, opportunity, and challenges

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has been proved to be a powerful tool for the free-form fabrication of titanium (Ti) implants. However, the surface quality of 3D printed Ti implants is not suitable for clinical application directly. Therefore, surface modification of 3D printed Ti implants is required in order to achieve good biocompatibility and osseointegration. In this study, a novel surface modification method of 3D printed Ti-6Al-4V implants has been proposed, which combined acid etching with hydrothermal treatment to construct micro/nanostructures. Polished TC4 sheets (P), electron beam melting Ti sheets (AE), and micro/nanostructured Ti sheets (AMH) were used in this study to evaluate the effects of different surface morphologies on cellular responses. The surface morphology and 3D topography after treatment were detected via scanning electron microscopy and laser scanning microscopy. The results illustrated that a hierarchical structure comprising micro-valleys and nanowires with a surface roughness of 14.388 μm was successfully constructed. Compared with group P samples, the hydrophilicity of group AMH samples significantly increased with a reduced water contact angle from 54.9° to 4.5°. Cell culture experiments indicated that the micro/nanostructures on the material surface could enhance the cell adhesion and proliferation of MC3T3s. The microstructure could enhance bone-to-implant contact, and the nanostructure could directly interact with some cell membrane receptors. Overall, this study proposes a new strategy to construct micro/nanostructures on the surface of 3D printed Ti-6Al-4V implants and may further serve as a potential modification method for better osteogenesis ability.
