Benign liver lesions include a wide variety of solid or cystic entities that are usually found in the absence of any underlying chronic liver disease (Table 2.1). Solid lesions are classified by pathologists based on the cell of origin into epithelial or mesenchymal formations. Furthermore, some lesions correspond to regenerative lesions, while others are truly neoplastic. Epithelial lesions include hepatocellular (focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) and hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs)) and cholangiocellular tumors (bile duct adenoma and biliary hamartoma). Mesenchymal tumors include hemangiomas, angiomyolipomas, or lipomas. Cystic lesions are frequent and include simple hepatic cysts, biliary hamartoma, also known as Von Meyenburg complex, and biliary cystadenoma.

Extensive solitary lymphatic malformation of the liver in a child: a case report and literature review

The appearance of a mass in the hepatic parenchyma may signal the presence of a myriad of systemic and focal pathological processes. Many of the more common focal liver lesions are described elsewhere in this book. The aim of this chapter is to describe imaging and pathologic findings of some of the more uncommon masses which can arise in the liver and their management. The rare adult and pediatric liver masses can mimic the more commonly encountered liver masses clinically as well as radiologically. A brief review of the literature regarding their presentation, current diagnostic approach, and treatment is presented.

Rare Liver Tumors

Hepatic lymphangioma is a rare benign lesion resulting from maldevelopment of the liver lymphatic vessels. It is usually associated with lymphangiomas of other viscera. Solitary lymphangioma of the liver is very rare. We report a rare case of solitary huge cystic hepatic lymphangioma in a two-months-old female infant. She presented with an abdominal mass. Imaging investigations showed a large, multiseptate cystic hepatic mass compressing the bladder but with no solid component. She had surgical resection of the hepatic mass. Histological examination revealed a cystic structure lined by epithelial cells and lymphocytes on the inner walls. The patient was last seen in the fourth-week postoperative. Subsequently, she was lost to follow up. A hepatic lymphangioma is a rare form of lymphatic malformation and its occurrence in a 2-months-old infant has never been reported.

Hepatic lymphangiomas, malformations of the liver lymphatic system, are extremely rare conditions in adults. A 41-year-old man presented with right upper abdominal pain for 6 months was introduced in this report. Ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated a giant cystictumor with a pedunculatedextrahepatic growth pattern. Due to diagnostic uncertainty, a partial hepatectomy was performed and pathological results confirmed the diagnosis of solitary hepatic lymphangioma. In this article, we reviewed the clinical and pathology features, preoperative diagnostic challenges, and treatments of hepaticlymphangiomas.
