An unusually large magnetocaloric effect for the temperature region below 10 K is found for the Fe14 molecular nanomagnet. This is to large extent caused by its extremely large spin S ground state combined with an excess of entropy arising from the presence of low-lying excited S states. We also show that the highly symmetric Fe14 cluster core, resulting in small cluster magnetic anisotropy, enables the occurrence of long-range antiferromagnetic order below TN=1.87K.

Magnetic refrigeration property and slow magnetic relaxation behavior of five dinuclear Ln(III)-based compounds

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) show wide potential applications in the field of ultrahigh-density storage materials, quantum computing, spintronics, and so on. Lanthanide (Ln) SMMs, as an important category of SMMs, open up a promising prospect due to their large magnetic moments and huge magnetic anisotropy. However, the construction of high performance for Ln SMMs remains an enormous challenge. Although remarkable advances are focused on the topic of Ln SMMs, the research on Ln SMMs with different nuclear numbers is still deficient. Therefore, this review summarizes the design strategies for the construction of Ln SMMs, as well as the metal skeleton types. Furthermore, we collect reported Ln SMMs with mononuclearity, dinuclearity, and multinuclearity (three or more Ln spin centers) and the SMM properties including energy barrier (Ueff) and pre-exponential factor (τ0) are described. Finally, Ln SMMs with low-nuclearity SMMs, especially for single-ion magnets (SIMs), are highlighted to understand the correlations between structures and magnetic behavior of the detail SMM properties are described. We expect the review can shed light on the future developments of high performance Ln SMMs.

Lanthanide single-molecule magnets: synthetic strategy, structures, properties and recent advance.

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have attracted much attention due to their potential applications in molecular spintronic devices. Rare earth SMMs are considered to be the most promising for application owing to their large magnetic moment and strong magnetic anisotropy. In this review, the recent progress in rare earth SMMs represented by mononuclear and dinuclear complexes is highlighted, especially for the modulation of magnetic anisotropy, effective energy barrier (Ueff) and blocking temperature (TB). The terbium- and dysprosium-based SMMs have a Ueff of 1541 cm−1 and an increased TB of 80 K. They break the boiling point temperature of liquid nitrogen. The development of the preparation technology of rare earth element SMMs is also summarized in an overview. This review has important implications and insights for the design and research of Ln-SMMs.

Recent Progress for Single-Molecule Magnets Based on Rare Earth Elements

By using a crab-like hydrazone ligand, dinuclear and tetranuclear dysprosium-based complexes Dy2 and Dy4 have been isolated. Magnetic investigation reveals that complex Dy2 shows typical single-molecule magnet behavior under a zero field, benefiting from the ferromagnetic coupling between the DyIII ions, while Dy4 possesses a diamagnetic ground state with the anisotropy axes of DyIII ions in centripetal arrangement. The magnetic anisotropies and couplings were confirmed by ab initio calculations.

Magnetic investigation in di- and tetranuclear lanthanide complexes

Four new and interesting Ln4 clusters formulated as [Ln4(NO3)2(acac)4(HL1)2(CH3OH)2]·2(CH3CN)] (Ln = Gd(1), Dy(2); H4L1 = 2-(hydroxymethyl)-2-(((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)amino)propane-1,3-diol); acac = acetylacetone) and [Ln4(NO3)2(acac)4(L2)2(CH3CH2OH)2] (Ln = Gd(3), Dy(4); H3L2 = 2-(((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)amino)-2-methylpropane-1,3-diol; acac = acetylacetone) were designed and constructed. Single-crystal X-ray studies indicate that all clusters have a defect dicubane topology in which four Ln(III) are on a plane bond with an arrangement of a parallelogram with the μ3-O bridge. The difference between the two series of clusters lies in the change of the ligand substituent and terminal coordinated solvent molecules. All Ln(III)-based clusters 1–4 have exhibited excellent solvent stability. The magnetic investigation suggests that clusters 1 and 3 possess a different magnetothermal effect (−ΔSm = 35.24 J kg–1 K–1 for 1, and −ΔSm = 36.68 J kg–1 K–1 for 3). In addition, the diversity in the environment of the metal center leads to the distinct dynamic behavior of Ueff/kB (21.27 K for 2 and 1.96 K for 4) and τ0 (1.43 × 10–7 s for 2 and 2.43 × 10–6 s for 4). More importantly, clusters 1–4 as heterogeneous catalysts can efficiently catalyze the reaction of CO2 with bromopropylene oxide and aromatic amine to synthesize oxazolidinones under mild conditions. By comparison, clusters 1 and 2 show higher catalytic activity than 3 and 4, in which the Brønsted acidic −OH groups working together with Lewis acid metal sites improve the catalytic activity of Ln(III)-based clusters 1 and 2. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first example of Ln(III)-based clusters that show good magnetic property and high catalytic activity simultaneously by regulating the coordination environment of Ln(III) ions. Our work provided a promising direction for regulating properties of multifunctional polynuclear Ln(III)-based clusters via changing the coordinated environment of the metal center. It also helps inspire the development of polynuclear Ln(III)-based multifunctional materials.

Three square-shape tetranuclear lanthanide complexes: {[Ln4(L)4(CH3O)4]·4CH3OH} (Ln = Gd (1), Tb(2), Dy (3); L = N′-(2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzylidene)-6-(hydroxymethyl)picolinohydrazide) were fabricated and structurally characterized. The [Ln4O8] core of complexes 1–3 was held together by four μ2 carbonyl oxygen atoms from the L2− ligands and four μ2 methanol oxygen atoms. Magnetic studies reveal that compound 1 exhibits cryogenic magnetic refrigeration property (−ΔSm = 30.20 J K−1 kg−1), and 3 shows ferromagnetic interactions. Slow magnetic relaxation behaviors are observed in 3. Also, compound 3 exhibits an energy barrier of ΔE/kB = 54.3 K and the preexponential factor τ0 = 4.77 × 10−6 s.
