Fabrication and characterization of thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes incorporated with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) for enhanced desalination performance and dye removal

In the present study, the phosphorylated chitosan (CSP) and phosphate-decorated carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCP) were cross-linked to synthesize a water-stable CSP-CMCP composite. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses indicated the occurrence of a dehydration-condensation reaction between amino and carboxyl groups as well as the introduction of abundant phosphate sites on CSP-CMCP surfaces. The maximum adsorption capacity of CSP-CMCP toward U(VI) (i.e., 977.54 mg/g at pH = 5.0 and T = 293 K) was superior to a series of adsorbents reported in the previous studies. In addition, CSP-CMCP showed an extremely high affinity for the selective capture of U(VI) from a simulated wastewater with multiple competing metal ions. The invention discloses a membrane type brackish water softening method based on a magnetic pretreating technology. The method is characterized in that brackish water is fed into an ultrasonic washing device through a feeding pump, wherein a magnetic field system is arranged in the ultrasonic washing device; the ultrasonic washing device is started in a fixed time to remove impurities on the tube wall and the surface of a magnetic treating unit in a fixed time; water subjected to magnetic pretreating and ultrasonic separating is fed into a self-washing filtering device through a booster pump so as to be filtered; the water filtered by the self-washing filtering device is fed into a nanofiltration membrane assembly through a high-pressure pump to be filtered and separated; when the operation reaches the set time or the flux of water produced by the nanofiltration membrane decreases to reach the set value, some water subjected to nanofiltration is returned to the nanofiltration membrane assembly for physical flushing so as to remove loose pollutants on the surface of the nanofiltration membrane. According to the method, the ultrasonic-magnetic pretreating and nanofiltration membrane hybrid coupling technology is adopted to realize efficient softening of brackish water; the system stopping time caused by membrane washing is reduced by 30%, so that the operation cost can be decreased.
