The samples of nickel-base self-lubricating composite (Ni60/nano-Cu/h-BN) (NSLC) with different additive amounts of MoO3 were manufactured by laser cladding on substrates of Q235 steel. The microstructure and hardness of the as-fabricated NSLCs were investigated. The wear and tribological behaviors of the NSLCs with and without MoO3 from 25 °C to 800 °C were discussed. The results revealed that the addition of MoO3 resulted in the hardness improvement of the NSLCs due to the formation of Mo2C and Cr (Mo)-rich reinforcements during laser cladding process. The NSLC with 4 wt% MoO3 addition showed the best wear performance from 25 °C to 800 °C. At 600 °C and 800 °C, MoO3 solid lubricant was regenerated by oxide reaction during the wear process. Meanwhile, CuMoO4 was generated owing to a tribo-chemical reaction at high-temperature. These solid lubricants formed a lubricating transfer film, which improved the tribological properties of the coating.

Study on the effect of TiC/B on the performance of laser cladding in-situ fabricating wear-resistant self-lubricating coatings

Self-lubricating NiCrBSi–Ni/MoS2 coatings are prepared on 304 stainless steel by pre-placed laser cladding, in which Ni/MoS2 is almost completely decomposed and the Cr x S y anti-friction phase is in situ generated. Meanwhile, (Cr, Fe)2B and (Cr, Fe)7C3 are generated from the molten pool as a result of oversaturated B and C atoms in γ-Ni and the diffusion of Fe atoms. Therefore, the composite coatings are mainly composed of γ-(Ni, Fe), (Cr, Fe)2B, (Cr, Fe)7C3, and Cr x S y . When compared with the substrate, the wear rate of the coatings with 20 wt-% Ni/MoS2 is reduced by 21.16%, owing to the Cr x S y lubricating phase, while it is reduced by 25.61% for the coatings with 5 wt-% Ni/MoS2, owing to blocky (Cr, Fe)2B or (Cr, Fe)7C3 hard phases. The wear mechanism of the coatings is adhesive wear and oxidative wear.

Wear properties of self-lubricating CrxSy/Ni coatings on 304 stainless steel by pre-placed laser cladding

In order to solve the problems of low deposition efficiency (DE) and premature spalling failure of YSZ (Y2O3 partially stabilized ZrO2)-based high temperature sealing coating, four types of YSZ-based agglomerated powder containing no bonding phase, Al2O3, yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG), and MgAl2O4, respectively, labeled as B0, B1, B2, and B3, which are prepared by spray granulation. Effects of bonding phases on DE and thermal cycling performance of YSZ-based sealing coating by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) are analyzed. The results show that, YAG has the strongest adhesion effect and wrapping effect, compared with B0 powder, the DE of B2 powder is increased by 181. 49%. The growing driving force of crack propagation and the brittleness of ceramic materials during thermal cycling are the main reasons for the spalling failure of ceramic coatings. Due to the dispersion toughening effect of YAG phase, the fracture of B2 coating presents a dimple-like morphology. Compared with B0 coating, the fracture toughness of B2 coating is increased by 39. 76% and the thermal cycle lives are increased by 43. 68%. The addition of YAG phase significantly improves the DE of YSZ-based high temperature sealing coating, and effectively improves the thermal cycle lives of the coating.
