In this paper, a novel framework for the automatic extraction of road footprints from airborne LiDAR point clouds in urban areas is proposed. The extraction process consisted of three phases: The first phase is to extract road points by using the deep learning model PointNet++, where the features of the input data include not only those selected from raw LiDAR points, such as 3D coordinate values, intensity, etc., but also the digital number (DN) of co-registered images and generated geometric features to describe a strip-like road. Then, the road points from PointNet++ were post-processed based on graph-cut and constrained triangulation irregular networks, where both the commission and omission errors were greatly reduced. Finally, collinearity and width similarity were proposed to estimate the connection probability of road segments, thereby improving the connectivity and completeness of the road network represented by centerlines. Experiments conducted on the Vaihingen data show that the proposed framework outperformed others in terms of completeness and correctness; in addition, some narrower residential streets with 2 m width, which have normally been neglected by previous studies, were extracted. The completeness and the correctness of the extracted road points were 84.7% and 79.7%, respectively, while the completeness and the correctness of the extracted centerlines were 97.0% and 86.3%, respectively.

Extracting Urban Road Footprints from Airborne LiDAR Point Clouds with PointNet++ and Two-Step Post-Processing

With the development of deep learning and remote sensing technologies in recent years, many semantic segmentation methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been applied to road extraction. However, previous deep learning-based road extraction methods primarily used RGB imagery as an input and did not take advantage of the spectral information contained in hyperspectral imagery. These methods can produce discontinuous outputs caused by objects with similar spectral signatures to roads. In addition, the images obtained from different Earth remote sensing sensors may have different spatial resolutions, enhancing the difficulty of the joint analysis. This work proposes the Multiscale Fusion Attention Network (MSFANet) to overcome these problems. Compared to traditional road extraction frameworks, the proposed MSFANet fuses information from different spectra at multiple scales. In MSFANet, multispectral remote sensing data is used as an additional input to the network, in addition to RGB remote sensing data, to obtain richer spectral information. The Cross-source Feature Fusion Module (CFFM) is used to calibrate and fuse spectral features at different scales, reducing the impact of noise and redundant features from different inputs. The Multiscale Semantic Aggregation Decoder (MSAD) fuses multiscale features and global context information from the upsampling process layer by layer, reducing information loss during the multiscale feature fusion. The proposed MSFANet network was applied to the SpaceNet dataset and self-annotated images from Chongzhou, a representative city in China. Our MSFANet performs better over the baseline HRNet by a large margin of +6.38 IoU and +5.11 F1-score on the SpaceNet dataset, +3.61 IoU and +2.32 F1-score on the self-annotated dataset (Chongzhou dataset). Moreover, the effectiveness of MSFANet was also proven by comparative experiments with other studies.

MSFANet: Multiscale Fusion Attention Network for Road Segmentation of Multispectral Remote Sensing Data

Roads are the fundamental elements of transportation, connecting cities and rural areas, as well as people’s lives and work. They play a significant role in various areas such as map updates, economic development, tourism, and disaster management. The automatic extraction of road features from high-resolution remote sensing images has always been a hot and challenging topic in the field of remote sensing, and deep learning network models are widely used to extract roads from remote sensing images in recent years. In light of this, this paper systematically reviews and summarizes the deep-learning-based techniques for automatic road extraction from high-resolution remote sensing images. It reviews the application of deep learning network models in road extraction tasks and classifies these models into fully supervised learning, semi-supervised learning, and weakly supervised learning based on their use of labels. Finally, a summary and outlook of the current development of deep learning techniques in road extraction are provided.

A Survey of Deep Learning Road Extraction Algorithms Using High-Resolution Remote Sensing Images

The unexpectedly high number of deaths caused by inadequate medical care is, to date, considered as a serious problem. Moreover, the ratio of elderly people who require continuous care is rising. Therefore, a patient monitoring system (PMS) also known as remote patient monitoring (RPM) using the latest Internet of Things (IoT) technology becomes a viable solution that can provide efficient healthcare from a remote distance. PMS monitors timely physiological signals of a patient’s health and can reduce the healthcare costs of treatment significantly. In PMS, different health and vital signs issues such as body temperature, heart rate, sleep monitoring, fall detection, and blood pressure can be checked effectively in real-time. To this end, this paper provides a clear vision of electronic healthcare assistance based on PMS and explores the applications of IoT that allow efficient medical services in healthcare systems. In particular, the objective of this paper is to provide a review of PMS, current research, and the challenges associated with this area. Besides, the essential services that can be offered by PMS for monitoring human activities are also discussed. Furthermore, the communication networks and protocols that are required to endure efficient healthcare systems are explained. Finally, this paper discusses several research challenges and open issues that can be investigated for further work. Overall, this paper offers valuable insights for both industry professionals and academic researchers, exploring potential avenues for new research directions.

Patient Monitoring System Based on Internet of Things: A Review and Related Challenges with Open Research Issues

A Survey of Multi-Agent Cross Domain Cooperative Perception

Digital maps of road networks are a vital part of digital cities and intelligent transportation. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review on road extraction based on various remote sensing data sources, including high-resolution images, hyperspectral images, synthetic aperture radar images, and light detection and ranging. This review is divided into three parts. Part 1 provides an overview of the existing data acquisition techniques for road extraction, including data acquisition methods, typical sensors, application status, and prospects. Part 2 underlines the main road extraction methods based on four data sources. In this section, road extraction methods based on different data sources are described and analysed in detail. Part 3 presents the combined application of multisource data for road extraction. Evidently, different data acquisition techniques have unique advantages, and the combination of multiple sources can improve the accuracy of road extraction. The main aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive reference for research on existing road extraction technologies.
