Moral values and good citizens in a multi-ethnic society: A content analysis of moral education textbooks in Malaysia

Background The Global School-based Health Survey showed that 20.6% of Indonesian students aged 13 to 17 years old were bullied. The proportion was lower than those reported from Southeast Asian countries (28.3% to 51.0%). School education was reported to contribute to the reduction of bullying, but no similar study has been done in Indonesia. This study aimed to explore the role of school-based education in preventing bullying in high schools in Indonesia. Methods In-depth interviews with principals and focus group discussions with teachers from five schools in Mataram City were conducted in 2018. Data were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. Participant observations and document reviews were conducted to verify the data. Results Seven themes emerged: (i) Bullying as a problem, (ii) Causes of bullying, (iii) Effects of bullying, (iv) Curricular interventions, (v) Cultural interventions, (vi) Institutional interventions, and (vii) Challenges and recommendations regarding current interventions. Curricular interventions include Pancasila (state ideology or principles of the state's philosophy) and civic education, and religious education, while cultural interventions include cultural practices and extracurricular activities. The schools provide an enabling environment by maintaining a good physical environment and implementing policies to prevent bullying. These activities promote the prevention of school bullying. Conclusion This study demonstrated that moral education in curriculum and cultural activities are avenues for the prevention of school bullying. The implementation of both religious education and civic education encouraged to create values among students. In Indonesia, current interventions should be continued and must be modified to respond with societal changes.

School-based education to prevent bullying in high schools in Indonesia.

This study shows the influence and relationship of Islamic moral values to the students’ behavior in Aceh Province. Learning Objects are the moral values of Islam achieved in learning in high school and vocational institutions that are assumed to affect the students’ behavior. The quantitative methods used in this study and was running by SPSS program. Data analysis using MRPI Likert Scale instrument. The data were taken from the students in the school totaling of 191 samples. The t-test and r test are used to analyze data from this research sample. The study found that Islamic moral values significantly correlated with the behavioral student at the level; [r (98) = 2.186 P <0.05]. The mean difference scores is 4.7 percent at the level (eta2 = 0.0047) and it was explained by the mean score at the rate (48.05: 5.56), and the student behavior is described with the average score (45.7: 5.12). In which a relational to behavioral variables (Y) with horizontal and vertical Islamic moral values (X1 and X2). This findings represented by multiple regression test (r) which score of 12.28 percent. Therefore, the study found significant differences between male and female student and positively related to student behavior. These findings have explained the pattern of relationships and the influence of moral values on students and implications for future research practice due to Islamic moral values and behaviral students.

The Influence of Islamic Moral Values on the Students' Behavior in Aceh.

Leadership is one of the essential factors that can influence community involvement in realizing the character of male and female students in the pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in Jambi, Indonesia . This study proposed Nyai’s (female religious leaders in the pesantren ) charismatic, economic, and social responsibility leadership models in the context of community empowerment (CE). This quantitative research aimed to determine the contribution of Nyai’s leadership models to CE. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed using path and flowchart analysis. The results showed that the three Nyai ’s leadership models in this study influenced and contributed to CE to support the pesantren ’ s activities and programs. This study recommended adopting the three Nyai’s leadership models in empowering the community in the pesantren .

Community empowerment in leading pesantren: A research of Nyai’s leadership

Education from the Islamic perspective, as a long life process and the function of Islamic religious education, should endeavor to teach and help students acquire different aspects of knowledge within the parameters of Islam through the use of a well designed curriculum. This paper attempts to investigate and discuss the development of Islamic religious curriculum in Muslim countries with emphasis on South-East Asia especially Indonesia and Malaysia. It begins with a brief history on the curricular reform of religious education in Arab countries and their impact on Southeast Asia. Then, it focuses on reform in religious education curriculum and the challenges faced by both countries. Some suggestions are put forward to reach cherished goals of Islamic religious education and the betterment of Islamic curricular reform in Muslim countries.
