Encyclopedia of Bilingualism and Bilingual Education

Schools are under increasing pressure to reclassify their English learner (EL) students to “fluent English proficient” status as quickly as possible. This article examines timing to reclassification among Latino ELs in four distinct linguistic instructional environments: English immersion, transitional bilingual, maintenance bilingual, and dual immersion. Using hazard analysis and 12 years of data from a large school district, the study investigates whether reclassification timing, patterns, or barriers differ by linguistic program. We find that Latino EL students enrolled in two-language programs are reclassified at a slower pace in elementary school but have higher overall reclassification, English proficiency, and academic threshold passage by the end of high school. We discuss the implications of these findings for accountability policies and educational opportunities in EL programs.

Reclassification Patterns among Latino English Learner Students in Bilingual, Dual Immersion, and English Immersion Classrooms.

It has been claimed repeatedly that teachers of both sexes pay more attention to male students. In many mixed-sex classrooms male pupils have been recorded as receiving more teacher attention than females (Brophy and Good, 1970a; Stanworth, 1983; Spender, 1982; Galton et al., 1980). In the classroom situation pupils are actively seeking attention. Certain pupils take up unusual positions in classroom discussion so frequently and consistently that their behaviour can hardly be deemed coincidental. Boys are more likely than girls to ask questions, for example, make heavier demands on the teacher's time or offer information (Stanworth, 1983). The gender imbalances in teacher and turn distribution among pupils may be in part attributable to sub-sets of boys engaging in strategies to secure that attention. There is a tendency for boys to demand more of the teacher and hence receive more than their share of attention (Clarricoates, 1978, 1980; Spender, 1982). There is a capacity on the part of the pupils to gauge the concerns of teachers and thus make their questions and comments heard and addressed by the teacher. In one lesson studied by French and French (1983), which comprised sixty-six pupil interactional turns, fifty of these were produced by boys who numbered less than half the class. A substantial amount of the turns were not allocated to male pupils by the teacher in the first place, but were achieved through interactional techniques designed to gain the teacher's attention.

Literacy for school improvement : value added for Malta

The Malta Primary Literacy Value‐Added study was the outcome of a process of testing and matching at ages 9–10, the pupils in Maltese primary schools who were tested three years earlier, at ages 6–7. All primary schools in the island took part at both stages. Pupils were tested in both Maltese and English at both ages. In addition extensive data on pupils’ home background was collected at both ages and added to the individual test records. Some 4239 pupils had complete data at both ages. This paper reports the findings of analyses of the resulting data using multilevel modelling. Individualised reports were prepared for each school, taking account of all the background data collected, and a series of one‐to‐one sessions were held with representatives of all schools to discuss how these could be used to help improve the education provided. Literacy teaching with tablets in bilingual primary classrooms : the Malta tabLit study

A part of comprehensive study related to the design and implementation of the Pedagogical Framework, which as an essential part of UNITE system development drives and guides the creation of e-/m-Learning scenarios, is presented. The paper elaborates on one of five components of the Pedagogical Framework related to national specifics and current pedagogical practices implemented in national curricula. Diverse aspects of national and school specifics regarding educational characteristics and existing practice were noted and analysed in order to formulate a common framework and make good use of the UNITE platform as well. Summary results of the undertaken analysis along with conclusion and recommendations are offered.
