Selective 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptor antagonism with ondansetron as treatment for diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome: a pilot study.
Charles J. Steadman,Nicholas J. Talley,Sidney F. Phillips,Alan R. Zinsmeister +3 more
- 01 Aug 1992
TL;DR: The results of this pilot study suggest that the motor effects expected with 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptor blockade may be diminished in some patients with IBS and the subjective improvement in stool consistency may reflect changes in the perception of defecation.

Variation of muscle tone in the human colon.
TL;DR: The barostat revealed a motor phenomenon not readily apparent by conventional manometry, which has the potential to explore another possibly important aspect of colonic function in humans.

Colonic tone and motility in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
Mario Vassallo,Michael Camilleri,Sidney F. Phillips,Charles J. Steadman,Nicholas J. Talley,Russell B. Hanson,A.C. Haddad +6 more
- 01 Aug 1992
TL;DR: It is concluded that colonic tone in patients with IBS showed the same nocturnal and postprandial variations as it did in healthy subjects.

Control of muscle tone in the human colon.
Charles J. Steadman,Sidney F. Phillips,Michael Camilleri,Nicholas J. Talley,A.C. Haddad,Russell B. Hanson +5 more
TL;DR: Colonic distensibility is increased by antidiarrhoeal drugs and this effect may contribute to their efficacy in slowing colonic transit and augmenting absorption.

Ileocolonic transit does not change after right hemicolectomy
Alexander Fich,Charles J. Steadman,Sidney F. Phillips,Michael Camilleri,Manuel L. Brown,A.C. Haddad,George M. Thomforde +6 more
TL;DR: The ileocolonic sphincter in humans appears to play only a minor role, at most, in ILEocolonic transit, and the colon remaining after right hemicolectomy stores residue so that bowel habits are not greatly disturbed.
