Architecture for implementing a perceptual user interface. The architecture comprises alternative modalities for controlling computer application programs and manipulating on-screen objects through hand gestures or a combination of hand gestures and verbal commands. The perceptual user interface system includes a tracking component that detects object characteristics of at least one of a plurality of objects within a scene, and tracks the respective object. Detection of object characteristics is based at least in part upon image comparison of a plurality of images relative to a course mapping of the images. A seeding component iteratively seeds the tracking component with object hypotheses based upon the presence of the object characteristics and the image comparison. A filtering component selectively removes the tracked object from the object hypotheses and/or at least one object hypothesis from the set of object hypotheses based upon predetermined removal criteria.

The image capture device has a capture location in a coordinate space. When a person is captured in the image, the method includes identifying a human head in the image and assigning the human head a head location in the coordinate space. The method also includes identifying an object held by the person in the image and assigning the object an object location in coordinate space. The method further includes identifying a relative position in coordinate space between the head location and the object location when viewed from the capture location. The relative position includes a dimension of depth. The method may be practiced on a computer system, such as one used in the gaming field.

Methods and systems for enabling depth and direction detection when interfacing with a computer program

An optical system tracks the motion of objects, including the human body or portions thereof using a plurality of three-dimensional active markers based upon triangulation from data read via multiple linear CCDs through cylindrical lenses. Each marker is lit in sequence so that it is in sync with a frame capture using the imaging system positioned and oriented so as to provide a basis for computing three-dimensional location. In the preferred embodiment, the imaging system detects an infrared signal which is sent out by the tag controller as part of the tag/marker illumination sequence at the beginning of the first tag position capture time. The controller then traverses through the tags in time sync with each imaging system frame capture cycle. Thus, only one unique tag will be lit during each image capture of the cameras, thereby simplifying identification. Using linear CCD sensors, the frame time (i.e. point acquisition time) is very short, allowing very many markers to be sampled and located sequentially in real time.

A wearable system collects data over an extended period from sensors mounted under each shoe/slipper inner sole, and three kinetic measurement sensors, one mounted on the subject's chest, and the other two on each thigh. The resulting data can be processed off line to determine if a loss of balance or fall has occurred and identify the basic activity that the subject was performing when it happened. The two inner sole foot pressure sensors provide data on the loading of the plantar aspect of each fore- and rear foot. Each kinematics measurement sensor module provides 3-axis acceleration and angular rate data from the torso and each thigh. All data is sampled at a high rate using an analog to digital converter, time stamped, and then stored in memory.

An electronic automatic reserve or primary parachute activation device incorporates partial or complete capture of freefaller or tethered parachute jumper kinematics to rapidly and reliable determine when to automatically activate deployment of the primary or reserve chute. This is important when the activation decision must be made within 5-10 seconds of the initiation of the jump as is the case for military low altitude parachuting.
