Health outcomes of HIV-exposed uninfected African infants
Athena P. Kourtis,Jeffrey Wiener,Dumbani Kayira,Charles Chasela,Sascha R. Ellington,Lisa Hyde,Mina C. Hosseinipour,Charles van der Horst,Denise J. Jamieson +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated severe (grade 3/4) morbidity and mortality in HIV-exposed uninfected infants and found that introducing prophylactic infant cotrimoxazole significantly decreased the rates of all morbidity outcomes.
Nutritional indicators of adverse pregnancy outcomes and mother-to-child transmission of HIV among HIV-infected women
Saurabh Mehta,Karim Manji,Alicia M. Young,Elizabeth R. Brown,Charles Chasela,Taha E. Taha,Jennifer S. Read,Robert L. Goldenberg,Wafaie W. Fawzi +8 more
TL;DR: Anemia, poor weight gain during pregnancy, and low BMI in HIV-infected pregnant women are associated with increased risks of adverse infant outcomes and MTCT of HIV.

Maternal but Not Infant Anti-HIV-1 Neutralizing Antibody Response Associates with Enhanced Transmission and Infant Morbidity.
Melissa Ghulam-Smith,Alex Olson,Laura F. White,Charles Chasela,Sascha R. Ellington,Athena P. Kourtis,Denise J. Jamieson,Gerald Tegha,Charles van der Horst,Manish Sagar +9 more
TL;DR: Plasma neutralizing activity in exposed infants and the infected mothers against heterologous HIV-1 variants and the quasispecies present in the mother is compared to indicate that preexisting anti-HIV-1 neutralization activity does not prevent breast milk transmission and may have negative consequences for the baby.

Pooled Individual Data Analysis of 5 Randomized Trials of Infant Nevirapine Prophylaxis to Prevent Breast-Milk HIV-1 Transmission
Michael G. Hudgens,Taha E. Taha,Saad B. Omer,Denise J. Jamieson,Hana Lee,Lynne M. Mofenson,Charles Chasela,Athena P. Kourtis,Newton Kumwenda,Andrea Ruff,Abubaker Bedri,J. Brooks Jackson,Philippa Musoke,Philippa Musoke,Robert C. Bollinger,Nikhil Gupte,Michael C. Thigpen,Allan W. Taylor,Charles van der Horst +18 more
TL;DR: Extended prophylaxis with nevirapine or with ne virapine and zidovudine significantly reduces postnatal HIV-1 infection and reduces the rate of HIV infection or death.
Role of Intestinal Mucosal Integrity in HIV Transmission to Infants Through Breast-feeding: The BAN Study
Athena P. Kourtis,Chris C. Ibegbu,Jeffrey Wiener,Caroline C. King,Gerald Tegha,Deborah D. Kamwendo,Jacob Kumwenda,Surinder P. Kaur,Valerie L. Flax,Sascha R. Ellington,Zebrone Kacheche,Dumbani Kayira,Charles Chasela,Charles van der Horst,Denise J. Jamieson +14 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that disruption in intestinal integrity is a mechanism of HIV transmission to infants through breast-feeding andplementary approaches to enhance intestinal mucosal integrity in the infant may further reduce breast- feeding transmission of HIV.
