Amorphous structure evolution of high power diode laser cladded Fe-Co-B-Si-Nb coatings

Broad-beam laser cladding (BLC) is an efficient method for coating preparation with wide application. However, the fabrication of advanced alloys by BLC has been rarely reported. The coating quality, microstructure and wear performance of the FeBSiNb coatings prepared by BLC were investigated in this paper. The coating quality and wear property of the Fe-based coatings were effectively improved by optimizing process parameters. Under the influence of rapid solidification by BLC, the FeBSiNb coatings exhibited a composite phase structure consisting of a major component of intragranular α-Fe phase and intergranular Fe2B phase. The in-situ generation of Nb-B particles dispersed all over the coatings, not only enhancing the mechanical property, but significantly increasing the wear resistance. The different cracking characteristics and heterogeneous segregation strengthening mechanism of FeBSiNb coatings have also been discussed for elucidating the progressive coating quality and excellent wear resistance, respectively.

Formation and wear property of broad-beam laser clad Fe-based coatings

A (Ni0.6Fe0.4)65B18Si10Nb4C3 amorphous composite coating has been fabricated on a mild steel substrate by a laser cladding process under different heat inputs. Observation of the structure and phase showed that the thickness of the coating decreased and the amorphous fraction increased when the laser cladding heat input was lower. The cooling rate increases when the heat input decreases, which favours the formation of amorphous phase. Microhardness and wear resistance test results indicated that a lower heat input led to higher microhardness and better wear resistance of the coating. An average microhardness of 1187.0 HV0.2 was obtained with a heat input of 69 J mm–1.

Structure and properties of laser-cladded Ni-based amorphous composite coatings

Ni59Zr16Ti13Si3Sn2Nb7 amorphous material was deposited by laser cladding onto Ti-3Al-5Mo-5V-4Cr-2Zr titanium alloy. Despite trials with wide range of process parameters, the present experiments were unable to retain complete amorphous surface microstructure after laser cladding. So the mixed structure with amorphous phase, intermetallic compounds and borides were obtained. XRD results showed that the amorphous phase fraction of the coatings was measured up to about50% depending on the laser cladding parameters. DSC curve showed that glass transition temperature (Tg) and crystallization temperature (Tx) was observed around 750K and 880K, respectively, which indicated that the Ni-based amorphous alloy coating had high thermal stability. The nanocrystalline grains, were about 40-100nm in size, precipitated from amorphous phase or interface between amorphous and borides. The Vickers hardness of coating depended on the amount of various phases that were present in different locations of coating.
