Currently, there is no “timber moment frame structural system,” as the basic glulam beam‐to‐column connections (usually represented by the bolted connections with slotted‐in steel plates) offer limited rotational stiffness such that they are usually treated as pin connections. This paper proposes an innovative type of moment‐resisting glulam beam‐to‐column connection reinforced by long steel rods with screwheads (LSRSs) and long self‐tapping screws (STSs). The motivation is to provide a stiff yet resilient beam‐to‐column connection that could possibly be used for the mid‐rise timber moment frame structural system without the need of shear walls or braces. Six specimens with different diameters of LSRSs were designed and experimentally tested to explore their rotational stiffness, moment‐resisting capacities, hysteretic moment‐rotation responses, and the associated failure modes. Results indicated that the proposed connection could provide not only a satisfying moment resistance, but also the energy dissipation and fast repairability that is related with structural seismic resilience. The design procedures and recommendations for the proposed connection were also provided based on the tested results. The presented experimental study serves as a handy reference for future designs and applications of the proposed connection in practical engineering projects.

Reinforced moment‐resisting glulam bolted connection with coupled long steel rod with screwheads for modern timber frame structures

Decarbonization of the mining industry on the basis of closing the energy generation, on the basis of cogeneration of coal mine methane, and on the internal consumption of the mine is a promising direction in ensuring sustainable development. Known problems of deep underground mining do not allow for realizing the potential of man-made gas reservoirs due to the deterioration of the conditions of development of reserves of georesources. The aim of the work was to improve recommendations for the substantiation of drilling parameters for undermined drainage boreholes for increasing methane production from unconventional coal-gas collectors. The authors’ approach innovation lies in the possibility of using the established patterns of better natural stability of undermined boreholes to optimize them as spatial orientation parameters in an existing drilling passport for the improvement of methane extraction productivity. For this purpose, smoothing (LOESS) of the experimental data of two similar types of wells was used; then deterministic interpolation methods in combination with a three-dimensional representation of the response function in “gnuplot” were used. As a result, it was found that the increase in the inclination angle from 40° to 60° leads to a significant transformation of the model of the studied process, accompanied by a decline in the dynamics of methane emission and a decrease in the distance of the productive work zone of this type of well from 13 to 5 m before the roof landing, which then is replaced by a sharp increase in the productive work zone up to 35 m ahead of the longwall face. This allows under specific conditions for recommending increasing the productivity of methane capex from technogenic disturbed coal-gas reservoir replacement of wells with a smaller angle of rise to the transition to a more frequent grid of clusters from wells #4.

Substantiation of Drilling Parameters for Undermined Drainage Boreholes for Increasing Methane Production from Unconventional Coal-Gas Collectors

To support the parametric analysis of timber-concrete composite (TCC) beams and the structural analysis of TCC frame systems, the computational effectiveness of various dimensional finite element (FE) models for TCC beams were evaluated in this study, including the one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D). It was found that the 1D frame FE model achieved by the fibre beam elements and the 2D model formed by the layered shell elements show apparently higher computational efficiency than the 3D FE model with solid elements. The FE models all exhibit good consistence with the test results in terms of the macroscopic bending performance of the TCC beams. Owe to the developing of the ABAQUS user subroutines in this study, the 3D model established in the ABAQUS/Explicit module could almost perfectly present the failure modes of the TCC beams, including the fracture of timber, failure of end connections, and cracks on concrete slab, and show higher accuracy of the numerical results than the 1D and 2D models. Additionally, the FE numerical interfacial strain and slip distributions are slightly larger than the test ones, due to various shortcomings of the definitions of the connections in the FE models. Generally, the FE models were validated to be feasible sufficiently for further studies on TCC structures. 

Nonlinear finite element analysis on timber-concrete composite beams

Experimental and finite element studies of prefabricated timber-concrete composite structures with glued perforated steel plate connections

Civilian buildings have been imposed to blast loading, resulting in irrecoverable damages and casualties. This paper studies the analytical and numerical performance of concrete slabs reinforced by Conventional Steel Rebars and Perforated Steel Plates based on the values recommended by ASCE Blast-Resistant and nonlinear Finite Element Analysis performed in Abaqus. ASCE Blast-Resistant proposes the equations covering the burst of any explosive materials, while Abaqus uses the TNT equivalent mass method. This study uses PSP as an alternative to CSR in concrete slabs because PSPs are more integrated with surrounding concrete than CSRs due to the particular geometry of the holes. In the analytical phase, based on ASCE Blast-Resistant, the nonlinear performance of the rectangular concrete slab reinforced with CSR under blast loading was determined. Then, in the numerical step, the square concrete slab reinforced with CSR subjected to blast loading was simulated and verified with the literature results. Furthermore, a nonlinear finite element simulation of the rectangular concrete slab was performed to validate the modeling. Moreover, the simulation results of the rectangular slab were compared with the analytical results calculated based on ASCE Blast-Resistant, revealing that the equivalent mass method used in Abaqus accurately simulates the behavior of the reinforced concrete slab under blast loading. Finally, CSRs were replaced by PSPs with an equal volume in the rectangular concrete slab to compare their performance showing that PSPs with equal volume compared to CSRs can reduce the reinforced concrete slab's maximum displacement by up to 20% and decrease its following wavelength.

Experimental and Nonlinear Analytical Studies on Prefabricated Timber–Concrete Composite Structures with Crossed Inclined Coach Screw Connections

Surface subsidence in coal mine areas can cause serious geological hazards. After a coal seam is mined, the overlying rock layers fracture, collapse, and expand; the fractured and bulking rock masses are then continuously compacted under the action of overburden load, which eventually leads to surface subsidence. Overburden isolated grout filling via surface boreholes, and high-pressure grouting to mining-induced fissures under the hard rock layer, uses the grouting pressure to compact the lower fractured and bulking rock masses in advance, replacing the subsidence void and effectively controlling the surface subsidence. The characteristics of rock mass collapse, bulking, and compaction associated with mining and grouting are the key to the design of grouting parameters and surface subsidence control. In this paper, a theoretical model of the rock masses’ compactness during grouting injection is proposed, which determines the compaction of rock masses under the action of grouting filling. An experimental study was conducted to reproduce the grouting pressure evolution and the rock masses compaction in response to grout filling. The results indicated that the rock mass compaction was small in the no-pressure stage, and that the low-pressure and pressure-boost stages were key to generating the compaction effect of the grout filling. It was found that compaction grouting substantially increased the filled volume by transforming the fractured and bulking space of the rock masses into a filled space. Using engineering measurement data, the rock masses compaction law for grouting is verified. This paper provides a theoretical basis for the design of overburden grouting parameters and the evaluation of subsidence control effectiveness.
