The frequent outbreak of global infectious diseases has prompted the development of rapid and effective diagnostic tools for the early screening of potential patients in point-of-care testing scenarios. With advances in mobile computing power and microfluidic technology, the smartphone-based mobile health platform has drawn significant attention from researchers developing point-of-care testing devices that integrate microfluidic optical detection with artificial intelligence analysis. In this article, we summarize recent progress in these mobile health platforms, including the aspects of microfluidic chips, imaging modalities, supporting components, and the development of software algorithms. We document the application of mobile health platforms in terms of the detection objects, including molecules, viruses, cells, and parasites. Finally, we discuss the prospects for future development of mobile health platforms.

Smartphone-based platforms implementing microfluidic detection with image-based artificial intelligence

It is highly desirable to develop efficient catalysts under high-current-density operation and long-term stability for high performance water splitting. However, most reported modified MOFs catalysts exhibited favorable catalytic activity under a low current density on 10 mA cm-2 and limited stability. In response, reasonable design and applications modified MOFs catalyst with high current density and prolonged stability is essential yet challenging. In this review, we firstly summed the classifications of modified MOFs with pristine MOFs, MOFs composites and MOFs derivatives. Then, we discussed the strategies on the high-current-density activity improvement referring to the electronic structure tuning, defect construction and vacancy formation, and methods on the long-term stability enhancement including active sites protection, catalytic support reinforcement and efficient surface reconstruction. Finally, we proposed the challenges and prospects of modified MOFs to achieve improvement for further industrial water splitting, which could bring design principles in the field of modified MOFs materials. 

Design of Modified MOFs Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting: High Current Density Operation and Long-Term Stability

Timely identification of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is crucial for the prevention of cervical cancer. Current HPV detection methods mainly rely on polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which often requires bulky equipment and a long assay time. In this work, we report a heating-membrane-assisted multiplexed microfluidics platform that couples recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and CRISPR technology (termed M3-CRISPR) for fast and low-cost detection of multiple HPV subtypes. The heating membrane can provide convenient temperature control for the on-chip RPA and CRISPR assays. This stand-alone system allows simultaneous detection of HPV16 and HPV18 with high specificity and detection sensitivity (0.5 nM and 1 × 10-18 M for unamplified and amplified plasmids, respectively) in 30 min with a fluorescence-based readout. Furthermore, we introduced an optimized lateral flow dipstick (LFD) into the portable system to allow visualized detection of HPV DNA. The LFD-based readout also reached a detection sensitivity of 1 × 10-18 M for amplified plasmids and realized successful detection of HPV subtypes in the clinical samples. Finally, we established an automatic microfluidic system that enables the sample-in-answer-out detection of HPV subtypes. We believe that this fast, convenient, and affordable molecular diagnostic platform can serve as a useful tool in point-of-care testing of HPV or other pathogens.

Coupling CRISPR/Cas12a and Recombinase Polymerase Amplification on a Stand-Alone Microfluidics Platform for Fast and Parallel Nucleic Acid Detection.

As an important strategic resource, rare earths (REs) constitute 17 elements in the periodic table, namely 15 lanthanides (Ln) (La-Lu, atomic numbers from 57 to 71), scandium (Sc, atomic number 21) and yttrium (Y, atomic number 39). In the field of catalysis, the localization and incomplete filling of 4f electrons endow REs with unique physical and chemical properties, including rich electronic energy level structures, variable coordination numbers, etc., making them have great potential in electrocatalysis. Among various RE catalytic materials, rare earth oxide (REO)-based electrocatalysts exhibit excellent performances in electrocatalytic reactions due to their simple preparation process and strong structural variability. At the same time, the electronic orbital structure of REs exhibits excellent electron transfer ability, which can reduce the band gap and energy barrier values of rate-determining steps, further accelerating the electron transfer in the electrocatalytic reaction process; however, there is a lack of systematic review of recent advances in REO-based electrocatalysis. This review systematically summarizes the synthesis, properties and applications of REO-based nanocatalysts and discusses their applications in electrocatalysis in detail. It includes the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) and other electrocatalytic reactions and further discusses the catalytic mechanism of REs in the above reactions. This review provides a timely and comprehensive summary of the current progress in the application of RE-based nanomaterials in electrocatalytic reactions and provides reasonable prospects for future electrocatalytic applications of REO-based materials.

The outbreak of global infectious diseases has posed a significant threat to public health, requiring the rapid and accurate diagnosis of pathogens promptly for the society to implement immediate control measures to prevent widespread pandemics. In this work, a magnet-actuated microfluidic array chip (MMAC) is developed with integrated sample processing and nucleic acid amplification for the rapid detection of multiple pathogens by loop-mediated isothermal amplification. In comparison to previous works, where fluid control was dependent on external equipment or finger-based manual pressing, the fluid control of the MMAC is realized by magnetically actuating a ferric oxide (Fe3O4) doped polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer that separates the sample from the LAMP reagent in a high-throughput manner, which not only reduces the complexity of fluid control but also enhances the repeatability of detection by eliminating variations in operation by different users. Examination with a testing sample containing Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli showed high specificity for pathogen detection without cross-contamination. The lowest detection concentration was 5.2 copies per μL for Salmonella typhimurium with a detection time of 60 min. The proposed method demonstrated the simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens, which is potentially helpful in applications of immediate diagnosis.
