Continuous monitoring of oil tanks is vital for analyzing local fuel consumption. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been a popular data source as it guarantees day-and-night and all-weather sensing capacity. However, most earlier studies adopt a scene-wise and oil tank-wise scheme, which is inefficient as there can be hundreds of oil tanks on an oil depot, while only a few are dynamic. Also, no study explores both intensity coherence and interferometric coherence for oil tank dynamics mapping. This article proposes a novel three-stage strategy to detect all oil tanks, identify dynamic oil tanks, and estimate their fuel volume changes based on both the intensity and phase information of SAR in both slant-range and geocoded projections. Results indicate that the intensity coherence can perfectly differentiate dynamic and stable oil tanks (a Jeffries–Matusita distance of 1.997) and is less vulnerable to repeat-pass SAR factors, such as baselines and atmospheric conditions. Via evaluating estimations’ consistency, our scattering keypoint detection exhibits 0.23 and 0.87 m precision of tank heights and diameters, respectively. By validation with ground truth data, oil tanks exhibiting floating-roof changes larger than 0.23 m are correctly identified. Also, the estimated storage changes agree well with actual changes with an R-squared value of 0.98 and a root-mean-square error corresponding to 1.05 m biases in floating-roof heights. These quantitative assessments confirm the robustness and broad applicability of our non-in situ data-needed approach, highlighting the opportunity to utilize spotlight SAR data to automatically and comprehensively monitor oil tank dynamics in remote sites.

Automatic Monitoring of Oil Tank 3D Geometry and Storage Changes with Interferometric Coherence and SAR Intensity Information

We propose a multifaceted architecture for automated essay scoring integrating semantic, thematic, and linguistic representations. Specifically, for the deep semantic content of the essay, we employ Convolutional Neural Network (ConvNet) and attention mechanism module to extract local semantic representation, and use ConvNet, Long Short-Term Memory network (LSTM), and attention mechanism module to capture the global semantic representation, providing the comprehensive deep semantic-facet representations. To answer the presence of prompt in the test essay, we utilize the Doc2Vec model to represent the target essay and the essay prompt as vectors and calculate their textual similarity as thematic-facet representations. In addition, we construct six categories of nine manual features, including grammatical errors, essay length, textual complexity, word complexity, sentence complexity, and the number of clauses, to capture the shallow linguistic representation that deep learning models may struggle to uncover. Finally, we integrate the multifaceted representation through the fully connected layer to automatically score essays. Experimental results on the standard public dataset ASAP and the more complex dataset CLC-FCE, which varies in standards, lengths, and topics, demonstrate that the proposed method effectively captures diverse aspects of textual representations. For the ASAP dataset, our method reduced the training time to 1862 s per essay and the inference time to 0.9778 s, achieving a 1.13 improvement in the Quadratic Weighted Kappa score over the previous best method. On the CLC-FCE dataset, our approach enhanced the Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient by 0.005 and 0.0337 respectively, surpassing prior benchmarks. 

A multifaceted architecture to Automate Essay Scoring for assessing english article writing: Integrating semantic, thematic, and linguistic representations

Change detection (CD) in high-resolution remote sensing imagery remains challenging due to the complex nature of objects and varying spectral characteristics across different times and locations. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown promising performance in CD tasks by extracting meaningful semantic features. However, traditional 2D-CNNs may struggle to accurately integrate deep features from multi-temporal images, limiting their ability to improve CD accuracy. This study proposes a Multi-level Feature Cross-Fusion (MFCF) network with 3D-CNNs for remote sensing image change detection. The network aims to effectively extract and fuse deep features from multi-temporal images to identify surface changes. To bridge the semantic gap between high-level and low-level features, a MFCF module is introduced. A channel attention mechanism (CAM) is also integrated to enhance model performance, interpretability, and generalization capabilities. The proposed methodology is validated on the LEVIR construction dataset (LEVIR-CD). The experimental results demonstrate superior performance compared to the current state-of-the-art in evaluation metrics including recall, F1 score, and IOU. The MFCF network, which combines 3D-CNNs and a CAM, effectively utilizes multi-temporal information and deep feature fusion, resulting in precise and reliable change detection in remote sensing imagery. This study significantly contributes to the advancement of change detection methods, facilitating more efficient management and decision making across various domains such as urban planning, natural resource management, and environmental monitoring. 

Remote Sensing Image Change Detection Based on Artificial Intelligence: Use of 3D-Convolutional Neural Networks and Multi-Level Feature Cross-Fusion Tools

Extracting buildings in urban scenes from remote sensing images is crucial for the construction of digital cities, urban monitoring, urban planning, and autonomous driving. Traditional methods generally rely on shadow detection or stereo matching from multi-view high-resolution remote sensing images, which is cost-intensive. Recently, machine learning has provided solutions for the estimation of building heights from remote sensing images, but challenges remain due to the limited observation angles and image quality. The inherent lack of information in a single modality greatly limits the extraction precision. This article proposes an advanced method using multi-source remote sensing images for urban building height estimation, which is characterized by multi-level cross-fusion, the multi-task joint learning of footprint extraction and height estimation, and semantic information to refine the height estimation results. The complementary and effective features of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and electro-optical (EO) images are transferred through multi-level cross-fusion. We use the semantic information of the footprint extraction branch to refine the height estimation results, enhancing the height results from coarse to fine. Finally, We evaluate our model on the SpaceNet 6 dataset and achieve 0.3849 and 0.7231 in the height estimation metric δ1 and footprint extraction metric Dice, respectively, which indicate effective improvements in the results compared to other methods. 

FusionHeightNet: A Multi-Level Cross-Fusion Method from Multi-Source Remote Sensing Images for Urban Building Height Estimation

3D information extraction is a key direction in the development of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology. Extracting the implicit 3D information in SAR image, such as the structure, texture, and occlusion relationship between the environment and the targets, is of significant and challenging for SAR image target interpretation, refined structure parameter extraction and 3D reconstruction. In this article, with a focus on the storage estimation of oil tank in SAR image, we modeled the structural projection points description operator to estimate the fine 3D structural parameters of oil tank and invert the storage information. We proposed the SAR image context prior to further extract the 3D information of the oil tank targets. In addition, by improving the separate offset regressor and adding different attention mechanisms in different branches, we better improved the estimation precision of the structural projection point of the oil tank target. We evaluated our model on the SAR image datasets from RADARSAT-2 with different observation conditions and resolutions, which demonstrates that our proposed model achieves the AP of 87.2% compared with 82.8% of baseline. Finally, we further discussed the effectiveness of the proposed method, as well as the future application prospect and promoting role in the field of SAR image 3D information extraction.
