Nanoscale Bi-based photocatalysts are promising candidates for visible-light-driven photocatalytic environmental remediation and energy conversion. However, the performance of bulk bismuthal semiconductors is unsatisfactory. Increasing efforts have been focused on enhancing the performance of this photocatalyst family. Many studies have reported on component adjustment, morphology control, heterojunction construction, and surface modification. Herein, recent topics in these fields, including doping, changing stoichiometry, solid solutions, ultrathin nanosheets, hierarchical and hollow architectures, conventional heterojunctions, direct Z-scheme junctions, and surface modification of conductive materials and semiconductors, are reviewed. The progress in the enhancement mechanism involving light absorption, band structure tailoring, and separation and utilization of excited carriers, is also introduced. The challenges and tendencies in the studies of nanoscale Bi-based photocatalysts are discussed and summarized.

Review on nanoscale Bi-based photocatalysts

Solar-to-chemical energy conversion via heterogeneous photocatalysis is one of the sustainable approaches to tackle the growing environmental and energy challenges. Among various promising photocatalytic materials, plasmonic-driven photocatalysts feature prominent solar-driven surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Non-noble plasmonic metals (NNPMs)-based photocatalysts have been identified as a unique alternative to noble metal-based ones due to their advantages like earth-abundance, cost-effectiveness, and large-scale application capability. This review comprehensively summarizes the most recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, and properties of NNPMs-based photocatalysts. After introducing the fundamental principles of SPR, the attributes and functionalities of NNPMs in governing surface/interfacial photocatalytic processes are presented. Next, the utilization of NNPMs-based photocatalytic materials for the removal of pollutants, water splitting, CO2 reduction, and organic transformations is discussed. The review concludes with current challenges and perspectives in advancing the NNPMs-based photocatalysts, which are timely and important to plasmon-based photocatalysis, a truly interdisciplinary field across materials science, chemistry, and physics.

Non-Noble Plasmonic Metal-Based Photocatalysts.

A novel double Z-scheme photocatalyst Ag3PO4/Bi2S3/Bi2O3 with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance for antibiotic degradation

In this work, Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully fabricated via a facile one-step synthesis using Bi(NO3)3 and nano-SiO2 as precursors. With the increasing amount of SiO2, α-Bi2O3 gradually transferred into β-Bi2O3, and Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 p-n heterojunction was obtained at the same time. The as-prepared samples were systematically characterized by XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 heterojunction photocatalysts exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than α-Bi2O3 on the degradation of organic pollutants under simulated sunlight irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the larger specific surface area, the larger contact angle, the formation of β-Bi2O3 and construction of p-n heterojunction. More importantly, the phase transition mechanism of Bi2O3 in Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 heterojunction photocatalyst was proposed, which is significant for the theoretical study and application of photocatalytic materials.

A high-performance Bi2O3/Bi2SiO5 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst induced by phase transition of Bi2O3

In this work, a novel C/Bi/Bi2O3 composite photocatalyst was prepared by a facile one-pot method, using EDTA-Bi as a precursor. The C/Bi/Bi2O3 composite photocatalyst exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than Bi2O3 on the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) under both simulated sunlight and visible light irradiation. Metallic Bi and the remaining organic carbon cannot only enhance the absorption of lights, but also accelerate the seperation of photogenerated charge carriers. As a result, the photocatalytic activity is enhanced. More importantly, this paper provides a facile method for the preparation of C/Bi/Bi2O3 composite materials, which is suitable for mass production.

One-pot synthesis of C/Bi/Bi2O3 composite with enhanced photocatalytic activity

In this work, we report a bismuth oxide film electrode with oxygen defects and honeycomb multilevel structure prepared by one-step hydrothermal method. The control of raw materials enables to control the thickness and morphology of BiO electrodes. The photoelectrocatalytic of prepared electrodes were tested in various conditions. Under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) and 3 V bias, the sample BiO-2 has the highest photoelectrocatalytic activity, which is 4.95 times higher than the photocatalytic activity and 9.86 times higher than the electrocatalytic activity. The oxygen defects of bismuth oxide were confirmed by EPR and DFT calculation. The morphology and structure of prepared samples were tested by XRD, scanning electronic microscope (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The enhanced photoelectrocatalytic activity is attributed to the proper bias voltage, oxygen defects, and honeycomb multilevel structure. The results of tapping experiments showed that the main active species during the photoelectrocatalytic progress is superoxide radical and the mechanism of the photoelectrocatalysis was proposed.

A honeycomb multilevel structure Bi2O3 with highly efficient catalytic activity driven by bias voltage and oxygen defect

In this work, Bi(OH)SO4 · H2O, a novel photocatalyst was prepared by a facile method. The sample was characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, Mott-Schottky curve and ESR. The band gap of Bi(OH)SO4 · H2O is about 4.64 eV, and its CB and VB are estimated at –0.5 and 4.14 eV, respectively. Degradation of RhB and PhOH under UV light irradiation illustrates that the sample has good UV activity. The results of ESR spectra and tapping experiments indicate that the main active species in the photocatalytic reaction process are hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals and holes. A possible mechanism of catalytic degradation of organic pollutants was proposed. This semiconductor has a positive valence band and high oxidation capacity theoretically and it may have broad application in synthesizing highly efficient photocatalysts through doping other elements or creating heterojunctions.
