We developed two-step solution-phase reactions to form hybrid materials of Mn3O4 nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets for lithium ion battery applications. Mn3O4 nanoparticles grown selectively on RGO sheets over free particle growth in solution allowed for the electrically insulating Mn3O4 nanoparticles wired up to a current collector through the underlying conducting graphene network. The Mn3O4 nanoparticles formed on RGO show a high specific capacity up to ~900mAh/g near its theoretical capacity with good rate capability and cycling stability, owing to the intimate interactions between the graphene substrates and the Mn3O4 nanoparticles grown atop. The Mn3O4/RGO hybrid could be a promising candidate material for high-capacity, low-cost, and environmentally friendly anode for lithium ion batteries. Our growth-on-graphene approach should offer a new technique for design and synthesis of battery electrodes based on highly insulating materials.

Mn3O4-Graphene Hybrid as a High Capacity Anode Material for Lithium Ion Batteries

Recent advances to develop manganese-rich electrodes derived from ‘composite’ structures in which a Li2MnO3 
 (layered) component is structurally integrated with either a layered LiMO2 component or a spinel LiM2O4 component, in which M is predominantly Mn and Ni, are reviewed. The electrodes, which can be represented in two-component notation as xLi2MnO3·(1 − 
 x)LiMO2 and xLi2MnO3·(1 − 
 x)LiM2O4, are activated by lithia (Li2O) and/or lithium removal from the Li2MnO3, LiMO2 and LiM2O4 components. The electrodes provide an initial capacity >250 mAh g−1 when discharged between 5 and 2.0 V vs. Li0 and a rechargeable capacity up to 250 mAh g−1 over the same potential window. Electrochemical charge and discharge reactions are followed on compositional phase diagrams. The data bode well for the development and exploitation of high capacity electrodes for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries.

Advances in manganese-oxide âcompositeâ electrodes for lithium-ion batteries

Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have many advantages such as the low price and abundance of sodium raw materials that are suitable for large-scale energy storage applications. Herein, we report an Mn-based pyrophosphate, Na(2)MnP(2)O(7), as a new SIB cathode material. Unlike most Mn-based cathode materials, which suffer severely from sluggish kinetics, Na(2)MnP(2)O(7) exhibits good electrochemical activity at ~3.8 V vs Na/Na(+) with a reversible capacity of 90 mAh g(-1) at room temperature. It also shows an excellent cycling and rate performance: 96% capacity retention after 30 cycles and 70% capacity retention at a c-rate increase from 0.05C to 1C. These electrochemical activities of the Mn-containing cathode material even at room temperature with relatively large particle sizes are remarkable considering an almost complete inactivity of the Li counterpart, Li(2)MnP(2)O(7). Using first-principles calculations, we find that the significantly enhanced kinetics of Na(2)MnP(2)O(7) is mainly due to the locally flexible accommodation of Jahn-Teller distortions aided by the corner-sharing crystal structure in triclinic Na(2)MnP(2)O(7). By contrast, in monoclinic Li(2)MnP(2)O(7), the edge-sharing geometry causes multiple bonds to be broken and formed during charging reaction with a large degree of atomic rearrangements. We expect that the similar computational strategy to analyze the atomic rearrangements can be used to predict the kinetics behavior when exploring new cathode candidates.

Anomalous manganese activation of a pyrophosphate cathode in sodium ion batteries: a combined experimental and theoretical study.

Effect of Sm2O3 modification on Li[Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08]O2 cathode material for lithium ion batteries

Nano-sized LiMn1−xFexPO4 (x = 0 and 0.1) was prepared by a solvothermal method in a mixed solvent of water and ethanol. LiMn0.9Fe0.1PO4–polyacene (PAS) composite exhibits a high conductivity (0.15 S cm−1), resulting in an excellent rate performance and good cycle life. The LiMn0.9Fe0.1PO4–PAS composite delivers a discharge capacity of 161, 141, and 107 mA h g−1 at 0.1 C, 1 C and 10 C, respectively. The well-distributed conductive polyacene surrounding the LiMn0.9Fe0.1PO4 nanoplates enhances the electronic contact of the nanosized crystalline particles and suppresses the manganese dissolution related to the structure evolution during cycling. Specifically, the manganese dissolution, electrolyte decomposition and the antisite defects are the most significant factors that impact the capacity degradation of olivine iron-doped lithium manganese phosphate cathode materials.

Improved electrochemical performance and capacity fading mechanism of nano-sized LiMn0.9Fe0.1PO4 cathode modified by polyacene coating

Morphology-controlled monodispersed LiMnPO4 nanocrystals as high-performance cathode materials for Li-ion batteries have been successfully synthesized by a solvothermal method in a mixed solvent of water and polyethylene glycol (PEG). Morphology evolution of LiMnPO4 nanoparticles from a nanorod to a thick nanoplate (∼50 nm in thickness) and to a smaller thin nanoplate (20–30 nm in thickness) is observed by increasing the pH value of the reaction suspension. Electrochemical measurements confirm that the LiMnPO4 thin nanoplates display the best charge–discharge performance, thick nanoplates the intermediate, nanorods the worst, which can be mainly ascribed to the difference in their morphologies and particle sizes in three dimensions. Further modification of LiMnPO4 thin nanoplates with graphene gives rise to an improved electrochemical performance compared with conventional pyrolytic carbon coated ones. The LiMnPO4 thin nanoplate/graphene composites deliver a high capacity of 149 mA h g−1 at 0.1 C, 90 mA h g−1 at 1 C, and even 64 mA h g−1 at 5 C charge–discharge rate, with an excellent cycling stability.

The present invention provides a method for preparing graphene, including reacting graphite in an acid solution in which an oxidant is present so as to obtain a graphene. Compared with the prior art, the advantages of the present invention reside in that, the graphene prepared by the method of the present invention has excellent quality and substantially increased yield and production rate, as compared with mechanical stripping, epitaxial growth, and chemical vapor deposition; and the graphene prepared by the method of the present invention has significantly improved quality, substantially reduced structural defects, and significantly increased conductivity, as compared with oxidation-reduction preparation in the solution-phase; besides, the method is also advantageous for a simple process, mild conditions, low cost, and very easy for scale production. The graphene prepared by the present invention has very broad prospects in the fields of lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, functional composite materials, transparent conductive films, and microelectronic devices, etc.
