A review on recent advances in selective and sensitive detection of heavy toxic metal ions in water using g-C3N4-based heterostructured composites

A sensitive simultaneous electroanalysis of phytohormones indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and salicylic acid (SA) based on a novel copper nanoparticles-chitosan film-carbon nanoparticles-multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CuNPs-CSF-CNPs-MWCNTs) composite was reported. CNPs were prepared by hydrothermal reaction of chitosan. Then the CuNPs-CSF-CNPs-MWCNTs composite was facilely prepared by one-step co-electrodeposition of CuNPs and CNPs fixed chitosan residues on modified electrode. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) were used to characterize the properties of the composite. Under optimal conditions, the composite modified electrode had a good linear relationship with IAA in the range of 0.01–50 μM, and a good linear relationship with SA in the range of 4–30 μM. The detection limits were 0.0086 μM and 0.7 μM (S/N = 3), respectively. In addition, the sensor could also be used for the simultaneous detection of IAA and SA in real leaf samples with satisfactory recovery.

Herein, we have focused on a new colorimetric ligand synthesized from the reaction of 2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzene-1,3-dialdehyde with 2-amino-thiophenol, and investigated its activity as a sensor. In this regard, the sensory activity of the ligand towards different ions (Mn2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Ag+, Na+, Cs+, Mg2+, Al3+, Ba2+, K+, and Pb2+) was studied. The specificity of ion bindings is discussed through UV-Vis analysis. The ligand that was synthesized showed remarkable sensitivity, with a detection limit of 0.001 ppb. Additionally, the presence of Pb2+ ions can be visually detected through a color change from colorless to yellow. In the last part of this work, we seek to predict the available experimental measurements. Density functional theory (DFT) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) are employed to examine the bonding between the ligand and the Pb2+ ion. The effect of water solvent was thoroughly examined for all the steps via the conductor-like Polarizable Continuum Model (CPCM). The theoretical findings revealed that electronic properties, including energy gap, adsorption energy, charge/energy transfer, and optical characteristics, undergo significant changes when Pb2+ cations are present. Hence, it can be inferred that the newly synthesized chemosensor (NC) is highly efficient in detecting Pb2+. 

Design, synthesis, and density functional theory studies of a new selective chemosensor for Pb2+

A new electrochemical sensor has been constructed for ultra-sensitive detection of lead ions (Pb2+) by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV), based on the copper sulfide/graphitic carbon nitride nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (CuS/g-C3N4/GCE). First, spherical CuS nanoparticles with good electrical conductivity were anchored on layered g-C3N4 with high coordination activity, affording an excellent electrode modifier CuS/g-C3N4 nanocomposite. Then, the performance of the CuS/g-C3N4/GCE and its electrochemical response to Pb2+ were thoroughly studied, and the sensing mechanism was investigated. On the one hand, the CuS/g-C3N4 nanocomposite has greatly improved the electron transportation and electrode performance through functional complementarity – CuS endows g-C3N4 with a good electrical conductivity and a large active specific surface area, while g-C3N4 endows CuS with high dispersibility and strong adsorption. On the other hand, the CuS/g-C3N4 modifier has effectively promoted the deposition of trace Pb2+ from the solution onto the electrode surface by means of synergistic enrichment (crucial for amplification of detection signals) – g-C3N4 can coordinate with Pb2+ by its large number of conjugated triazine heterocyclic rings in its molecular framework, while CuS can adsorb Pb2+ due to its inherent size effect of nanomaterials. The proposed sensor can efficiently detect Pb2+ in the concentration range of 0.050–5.000 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 4.00 nM, and can be well applied for the detection of trace Pb2+ in actual tea samples.
