Influence of on-the-tree fruit bagging on biotic stresses and postharvest quality of rainy-season crop of ‘Allahabad Safeda’ guava (Psidium guajava L.)

Chilli hybrids are grown on Kamuthi and Paramakudi blocks of Ramanathapuram district on nearly 50 ha area Assessment of chilli hybrids for growth, yield and higher productivity was conducted at five different farmers’ fields during the year 2017–18 under on farm testing TNAU Co (Ch) 1, Arka Harita, Arka Meghana and local variety were used in this study The results revealed that TNAU CO (Ch)1 hybrid recorded the highest values for growth, yield and cost economics traits The growth characters like plant height (4963 cm), number of fruits/plant (8250), fruit weight (560 g) and fruit length (1089 cm) observed the highest values in TNAU Co (Ch)1 followed by Arka Harita as (4850cm; 7830; 531g and 1019 cm whereas local hybrid recorded the lowest values for all the traits Arka Harita took the minimum number of days of 50 per cent flowering (43) Regarding yield, TNAU CO (Ch)1 hybrid recorded the highest plant yield (44920 g) and yield/ha (1676 t/ha) followed by Arka Harita (4130 g; 1547 t/ha) whereas local check recorded the lowest yield of 1314 t/ha In the case of benefit cost ratio, CO (Ch)1 recorded the highest ratio of 303 with the net profit of 1,34,920 followed by Arka Harita (285) whereas local check observed the lowest B:C ratio (219) and net profit of Rs 83,200 TNAU CO (Ch)1 hybrid is performed well and increased yield of 27 per cent with good market preference over the farmers practices Due to highest yield TNAU CO (Ch)1 was found to be the most suitable chillies hybrid under Ramanthapuram condition

Assessment of Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) Hybrids for Growth and Yield Characters

The present study was undertaken to understand and find out the morphological characters contributing to the diversity of chilli germplasm of Manipur. A total of 20 chilli cultivars were collected from different districts of Manipur and characterized using 41 morphological characters (both qualitative and quantitative) based on IPGRI Descriptor for chilli. Cluster analysis using NTSYS revealed grouping of 20 chilli cultivars into 3 major groups at a distance co-efficient of 0.04 - 0.05. The first major group consist of 5 cultivars  which are all bigger chilli cultivars and the second major cluster consist of 4 cultivars which are mainly consume in daily cuisine  and the last major cluster consist of 11 cultivars which are small to medium in size. The first 2 principal components explained 97% of total variance. Based on eigen values greater than (±0.6), all the 41 characters used were informative and contributes highly to chilli diversity. So, the present study revealed that all the 41 morphological characters proposed by IPGRI descriptors can be successfully used in classifying bigger chilli cultivars from medium and small size chilli and daily used chilli cultivars.

Classification and characterization of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) found in Manipur using multivariate analysis

Genetic variability in chilli (Capsicum annuum L.).

There is a reduction in this production rate of guava cultivation since last few years as the fruit cultivation has been adversely affected by different varieties of fruit flies (Bactrocera spp.) infesting different orchards in different areas of Uttar Pradesh. These insect pests severely damage the guava fruits, rendering them unfit for consumption and off-market. In this research, we have carried rigorous investigations in the various orchards of Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh state of India, for a course of five months (October-February) over a time duration of three years (2021-2023) to identify the complexity of species of fruit flies that are causing harm to significant guava types including Allahabad Safeda, Chittidar, Arka Mridula and Harijha. The capturing process was conducted using self-made traps of plastic material coated with parapheramone, methyl eugenol, as fruit fly attractant placed in various guava orchards. In this research a total of 247, 251.8 and 272.6 mean number of fruit fly species were captured during 2021, 2022 and 2023 respectively. The findings showed that out of eight total fruit fly species captured during the season four, namely Bactrocera dorsalis, B. zonata, B. Correcta and B. tau belonging to the genus Bactrocera, were significantly overrepresented in all these varieties of guava with mean numbers (per month) 99.8, 73.8, 42.4 and 22.4 respectively for the year 2021 and 102.4, 71.2, 48.8 and 15.8 for the year 2022 and 125.8, 83.8, 40.6 and 14 for the year 2023. Allahabad Safeda was recorded with the highest mean number of fruit flies captured numbering approximately 129.82 per month followed by Arka Mridula, Chittidar and Harijha numbering 76.18, 23.70 and 17.13 per month respectively. Subsequently, for the next two years 2022-2023 Allahabad Safeda variety was again recorded with highest number of fruit flies captured numbering 130.61 and 121.94 followed by the rest of three with mean numbers 73.26, 29.24, 18.69 (2022) and 75.91, 34.81, 39.94 (2023) respectively. 

Species diversity of fruit flies (Bactrocera spp.) in Guava orchards of Sahanpur District of Uttar Pradesh

Fruit fly (Bactrocera correcta Bezzi) is the major pest of Guava grown in Baruipur region of West Bengal, contributing upto 90% yield loss. The present study was undertaken during 2011-12 at farmersâ€™ field to validate the wrapping of individual fruits at tree and to standardize the wrapping material and the correct technique of wrapping. Performance of nine different types of wrapping materials (butter paper bag, polypropylene bag of 20I¼ gauge with and without paper piece inside, non-woven poly fabric bags of white, green and blue colour with 20 gsm and 40 gsm thickness) along with two chemical approaches were studied against untreated control. Fruit fly infestation varied between 1.32 % and 17.31% in all treatments using wrapping materials and 13.14% in case of combined use of pheromone trap (Bacu lure) and Dichlorvos spray as compared to 21.71% in sole use of Dichlorvos and 66.67% in control plots. Wrapping resulted in increased weight of individual fruits (112.58 g in butter paper bag compared to 68.40 g in control). Wrapping with transparent polypropylene bags (20I¼ gauge) with partial paper cover inside, resulted in lowest yield loss (1.66%), earlier fruit maturity, better fruit quality (in respect of colour and glossiness), highest market price (`30 per kg) and highest net profit (`1.357 lakh/ha). This material is durable enough to be reused for 4-5 times. The partial paper cover helped to prevent scorching injury to the fruit as well as to control the humidity inside the polypropylene bag.

Bio-friendly management of Guava fruit fly (Bactrocera correcta Bezzi) through wrapping technique

Chilli (Capsicum annum L.) is one of the most important vegetable as well as spice crop, indispensable in every Indian diet due to its pungency, spicy taste and appealing colour and flavour. It has a predominant position among the spices grown all over India. The production share of chillies among the major spices in India is 25-26 percent (Nandeshwar and Bharad, 2019). Chilli is praised for it’s two important qualities, the pungency due to a crystalline acrid volatile alkaloid called Capsaicin and captivating red colour due to the pigment Capsanthin. In India, major chilli producing states are Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu (Rajamanickam, 2020). Studies on Genetic Variability in Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) in the Sundarban Region of West Bengal

Thirty seven diverse chilli (Capsicum annuum) genotypes were studied for 22 growth, yield and fruit quality traits. Multivariate analysis grouped the genotypes into 7 clusters. Cluster IV was largest containing 14 genotypes. Inter cluster distance was maximum between cluster V and VII (248.09), and minimum between cluster I and II (57.80). Cluster VII was most heterogeneous (intra-cluster divergence value 191.25) and Cluster II was most homogeneous (30.25). Genotypes were also analyzed for peroxidase enzyme polymorphism using gel electrophoresis which resulted seven electrophoretic bands (Rf 0.19 to 0.59) and grouped the genotypes into 6 zymotypes. Zymotype P4 included maximum (13) number of genotypes. Number of clusters in peroxidase and multivariate analysis were almost same but distribution of genotypes varied. 73% of total genotypes showed similar pattern of grouping suggesting that the two methods are complementary to each other and should be carried out simultaneously to determine genetic diversity more effectively. Considering variability and diversity analysis of the genotypes, CUCH-4 from Cluster-II (& Zymotype-P2) and CUCH-31, CUCH-34 and CUCH-35 from Cluster-VII (& Zymotype-P4) were identified as promising genotypes which can be used in further crop improvement programme.
