Metabolome-microbiome signatures in the fermented beverage, Kombucha

The implementation of agronomic activities, based on the use of biostimulants, is an important element of agroecological practices. Therefore, comprehensive research was carried on the use of biostimulants. A field experiment was performed in 2016-2018 with common bean of Mexican Black cultivar. In particular growing seasons, bean plants were treated with Kelpak SL (seaweed extracts) and Terra Sorb Complex (free amino acids) in the form of single and double spraying with two solutions concentrations. According to the obtained data, application of biostimulants increased the yield of bean. Better results were observed after the use of Kelpak SL. The application of preparations influenced nutritional and nutraceutical quality of bean seeds. Terra Sorb Complex caused the highest increase in proteins level. In the light of achieved data, biostimulants in similar level decreased the starch accumulation. The most promising results, in the context of nutraceutical value of bean, were obtained in the case of increasing level of fiber. A positive impact of biostimulants on the seeds antioxidant potential was noted, expressed by the increased synthesis of phenolics, flavonoid, anthocyanins and antioxidant activities. Results of this study, directly indicate economic benefits from the use of biostimulants, which are extremely important to the farmers.

Currently, modern agriculture aims to improve the quantity and quality of crop yield, while minimizing the negative impact of treatments on the natural environment. One of the methods to increase plant yield and quality, especially after the occurrence of both abiotic or biotic stress factors, is the application of biostimulants. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of Ecklonia maxima extract on plant growth, and the yield, nutritional, and nutraceutical properties of soybean seeds. A field experiment was conducted in three growing seasons (2014–2016). Soybean seeds of Atlanta cultivar were sown in the third 10-day period of April. Ecklonia maxima extract was applied in the form of single or double, spraying in the concentrations of 0.7% and 1.0%. Determinations were conducted for: biometric traits, seed yield, seed number, thousand seeds weight, contents of lipids, and proteins in seeds. Further analyses included the contents of total polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and reducing power. The number of seaweed extract applications and its concentration modified biometric traits, yield, and quality of crop, while also also altering the nutraceutical and antioxidative potential of soybean. The application of this preparation improved the growth and yield of soybean without any negative effect on the nutritive value of seeds.

Morphological and Biochemical Responses of Glycine max (L.) Merr. to the Use of Seaweed Extract

The chemical composition of four olive and four argan oils marketed in Morocco as extra-virgin oils was compared. Oxidative stability was also determined initially under accelerated conditions. Composition and oxidative stability of olive oils was found to be fluctuant and variety-dependent, whereas argan oil presents a profile that should more likely satisfy consumers eager to know the precise composition and nutritional property of their food.

Morphological, physico-chemical characteristics and effects of extraction solvents on UHPLC-DAD-ESI-MSn profiling of phenolic contents and antioxidant activities of five date cultivars (Phoenix dactylifera L.) growing in Algeria

The main focus of the present work is the analytical study of the fatty acid, triglyceride (TAG) and tocopherol composition of oil extract from the fruit of Algerian tree Argania spinosa. The four dominant fatty acids (FA) found in the oil are: oleic C18:1 (52.86%), linoleic C18:2 (25.0%), palmitic C16:0 (14.65%) and stearic C18:0 (7.06%). The distribution of FA between the sn-2 and sn-1,3 positions of TAG from the oil was also determined. Unsaturated FA showed a preference for the internal position, as generally found in vegetable oils. The TAG composition was calculated using the lipase hydrolysis. The oil was found to contain trisaturated (0.47%), disaturated (9.3%), monosaturated (43.95%) and triunsaturated (45.20%) FA. Flash chromatography with solvent of increasing polarity yielded 83.42% neutral lipids, 1.56% glycolipids and 2.09% phospholipids. The oil was characterised by a relatively high amount of tocopherols (1027.8 mg/kg). The (γ+β)-tocopherols were the major isomers, with the rest being α- and δ-tocopherols.

Effect of different Solvent Polarity on Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Algerian Rhanterium adpressum Flowers and their Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Activities

Background: Lawsonia alba seed oils are not widely used commercially even though theyhave characteristics that well suit for industrial applications and can contribute to healthy humandiets. The most important aim of the present work is the evaluation of the tocopherols composition ofthese oils. Moreover, lipid classes, fatty acids compositions and antioxidant activity of the seed oilswere also investigated.Methods: Lawsonia alba seed oils were extracted with Soxhlet device using n-hexane andchloroform/methanol. Tocopherols were analyzed by HPLC, and then their antioxidant activitieswere determined using two different assays: DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), andPhosphomolybdenum.Results: The content of the oils ranged from 7.52 to 10.45%. Polyunsaturated fatty acids dominatedall the studied samples. Linoleic, followed by palmitic and oleic, were the major fatty acids found inthe crude seed oils and their lipid classes. Results of tocopherols identification showed that the seedoils were rich in tocopherols, especially γ- and δ- tocopherols. For DPPH assay, the antioxidantpowers varied from medium to low values (IC50 = 0.11 to >31.96 mg/mL). The results of thePhosphomolybdenum assay showed very important activities of the oils that were decreasing in thefollowing order: polar lipids > neutral lipids (Chloroform/Methanol) > total lipids > neutral lipids(n-hexane).Conclusion: this current report reveals the richness of the Lawsonia alba seeds in tocopherols, whichin fact is studied for the first time. Moreover, cluster analysis revealed that fatty acid composition ofthe seed oils of Lawsonia alba were very close to those of Walnut.
