The Greek Database of Seismogenic Sources (GreDaSS) is a repository of geological, tectonic and active-fault data for the Greek territory and its surroundings. In this report, we present the state-of-the-art of an on-going project devoted to the building of the GreDaSS, which represents the results of decades of investigations by the authors and a myriad of other researchers working on the active tectonics of the broader Aegean Region. The principal aim of this international project is to create a homogeneous framework of all of the data relevant to the seismotectonics, and especially the seismic hazard assessment, of Greece and its surroundings, as well as to provide a common research platform for performing seismic hazard analyses, modeling and scenarios from specific seismogenic structures. In particular, we introduce and synthetically describe the results obtained (and included in the database) to date in the northern sector of continental Greece and the Aegean Sea. As a first step we collected all available (both published and unpublished) historical and instrumental seismicity data relevant to the determining of the causative faults. Following the experience of recent 'surprising' earthquakes (e.g. 1995 Kozani, and 1999 Athens), we realized the deficiency of such an approach, and decided to also include in the GreDaSS active faults (i.e. seismogenic sources) recognized on the basis of geological, structural, morphotectonic, paleoseismological and geophysical investigations. A second step is the critical analysis of all of the collected data for the extraction of the necessary seismotectonic information, enabling the recognition of as many seismogenic sources as possible, as well as their characterization and parameterization. The most updated version of the database consists of numerous seismogenic sources that are categorized into three types: composite, individual, and debated. In this report, we describe the major seismotectonic properties of all of the composite seismogenic sources and individual seismogenic sources in northern Greece, which imply the partitioning of the area into five sectors that show similar internal behavior. Northern Greece was chosen as a pilot area because the parameters and accompanied metadata of its seismogenic sources show a high level of confidence and completeness. The amount of information and the degree of uncertainty is different for the three types.

The Greek Database of Seismogenic Sources (GreDaSS): state-of-the-art for northern Greece

Fourteen sediment samples from the banks of river Nestos, Northern Greece, were collected, extracted with HNO3 and analyzed for their content in 10 major and 32 trace elements. The analytical methods used were ICP-OES and ICP-MS. The results indicate that the sediments in the northern Greek part of the river have the highest elemental concentrations partly because of human activities, but mainly due to natural processes. The two dams that have been constructed in the middle course play a buffering role on the elemental content, for all the elements analyzed, of the river sediments, decreasing downstream concentrations and sediment load. An increase of concentrations is newly observed in the low course and delta because of the mobilization of fine sediments by natural processes and agricultural practices. The comparison of the river sediment contents with contaminated land guidelines has not revealed any potentially dangerous concentrations for the elements analyzed.

Geoarchaeology of Ancient Aulis (Boeotia, Central Greece): human occupation and Holocene landscape changes

Geochemical characterization of two landfills, one closed and the other still active, both located near Komotini (Thrace, Greece), has been carried out. The aim was to provide an integrated and reliable methodology for a rapid assessment of the real impact of a municipal solid waste landfill, in the main environmental matrices (air and water) of the surrounding areas. The chemical (CO2, CH4, CO, H2, N2, and O2 + Ar) and isotopic characterization (δ13C(CO2) and δ13C(CH4)) of landfill gas and chemical (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl−, SO4
 2−, HCO3
 −, NH4
 +, NO3
 −, NO2
 −, B, COD, Fe, Mn, As, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Hg) and isotopic analysis (δD, δ18O, tritium content, and δ13CDIC) of leachate, stream waters and groundwaters, and flux survey on the air–soil interface has been carried out. Combined chemical and isotopic analysis of the fluids collected inside and in the surroundings of the Komotini landfills supply a detailed picture of biogas emission and composition as well as of leachate chemistry and interaction with local waters. The results arising in this case study demonstrate that it is possible to propose a quick and reliable geochemical protocol to get a detailed picture of the state of health of the environment around a landfill.

Η πeριοχή του κeντρικού Eυβοϊκού κόλπου χαρακτηρίζeται από μέτρια σeισμική δραστηριότητα, eνώ λόγω και της χαμηλής μορφολογίας απουσιάζουν χαρακτηριστικές μορφοτeκτονικές δομές eνeργού τeκτονικής. Eν τούτοις, η γeωλογική χαρτογράφηση σe κλίμακα 1:5.000, η αξιολόγηση των λιθοστρωματογραφικών δeδομένων και η τeκτονική ανάλυση στην eυρύτeρη πeριοχή της Χαλκίδας και την παρακeίμeνη πeριοχή της Δροσιάς, έκανe eφικτή τη διαπίστωση ύπαρξης eνeργών και δυνητικώς eνeργών ρηγμάτων. Τα ρήγματα αυτά σχηματίστηκαν ή ανέδρασαν κατά τη διάρκeια του Τeταρτογeνούς, αφού eπηρeάζουν π^στοκαινικές υφάλμυρeς και χeρσαίeς αποθέσeις. Ορισμένα από τα ρήγματα τα οποία βρίσκονται στην eπαφή του προνeογeνούς υποβάθρου μe τους τeταρτογeνeίς σχηματισμούς παρουσιάζουν μeγάλου eύρους κατοπτρικές eπφάνeιeς, μe γραμμώσeις ολίσθησης και άλλeς καθοδηγητικές μικροδομές, που έδωσαν τη δυνατότητα προσδιορισμού του πeδίου των τeκτονικών τάσeων. Η προέκταση των ρηγμάτων μέσα στις eκτeταμένeς αλλουβιακές πeδιάδeς eπιβeβαιώθηκe μe την eκτέλeση γeωφυσικών eρeυνών. Μeταξύ των ρηγμάτων που προσδιορίστηκαν θeωρούνται σημαντικότeρα τα eνeργά ρήγματα Αγ. Μηνά-Χαλκίδας, Αυλίδας και Αeυκαντίου. Το πρώτο, μe διeύθυνση ΑΒΑ-ΑΝΔ και νότια κλίση eκτeίνeται από τη χeρσόνησο της Δροσιάς μέχρι βόρeια από την Χαλκίδα Τα άλλα δύο eίναι παράλληλα αντιθeτικά ρήγματα μe διeύθυνση ΑΒΑ-ANA που οριοθeτούν το αρχικό τμήμα του Νότιου Eυβοϊκού κόλπου στην Στeρeά Eλλάδα και την Eύβοια αντίστοιχα. Η χαρτογράφηση και ο προσδιορισμός eνeργών ρηγμάτων και η eπιβeβαίωση τους μe γeωφυσικά δeδομένα σe μια πeριοχή όπου απουσιάζουν τα eμφανή κριτήρια αναγνώρισης τέτοιων δομών, έχeι ιδιαίτeρη σημασία κυρίως για την αξιολόγηση της σeισμικής eπικινδυνότητας. Eπιπλέον, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τους τeλeυταίους μeγάλους απρόβλeπτους σeισμούς στην Eλλάδα αλλά και παγκοσμίως, γίνeται φανeρή η ανάγκη προσανατολισμού της διeπιστημονικής έρeυνας στην μeλέτη πeριοχών που θeωρούνται μeιομένου eνδιαφέροντος από σeισμοτeκτονική άποψη.

Identifying fault activity in the central evoikos gulf (greece)

Active oblique to strike-slip faults were identified in southern Thrace (northeastern Greece), on the basis of field observations, geological mapping, analysis of geometrical and dynamic characteristics of recent tectonic structures as well as evaluation of their seismic potential. The seismic activity refers mainly to strong earthquakes occurring under the sea, while a minor number of seismic epicenters have been registered on land. According to the historic and recent data, most seismic destructions in this region are due to the influence of the North Anatolian Fault and North Aegean Trough system. The diachronic activity of several faults and the changes in the movement type from clearly normal to oblique-normal or strike-slip, have left clear signs on the existing polished fault planes. Among the numerous faults determined in Thrace, some of them can be characterized as active, according to their geological and morphotectonic characteristics. Taking in to account the faults length, the specific seismotectonic conditions prevailing over the Hellenic territory and the existed empirical relationships, the maximum displacement in case of seismic reactivation was estimated.
