Author(s): Bartoszek, L; et al. | Abstract: The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for charged lepton flavor violation via the coherent conversion process mu- N --g e- N with a sensitivity approximately four orders of magnitude better than the current world's best limits for this process. The experiment's sensitivity offers discovery potential over a wide array of new physics models and probes mass scales well beyond the reach of the LHC. We describe herein the preliminary design of the proposed Mu2e experiment. This document was created in partial fulfillment of the requirements necessary to obtain DOE CD-2 approval.

Mu2e Technical Design Report

Results of beam tests with planar silicon pixel sensors aimed towards the ATLAS Insertable B-Layer and High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrades are presented. Measurements include spatial resolution, charge collection performance and charge sharing between neighbouring cells as a function of track incidence angle for different bulk materials. Measurements of n-in-n pixel sensors are presented as a function of fluence for different irradiations. Furthermore p-type silicon sensors from several vendors with slightly differing layouts were tested. All tested sensors were connected by bump-bonding to the ATLAS Pixel read-out chip. We show that both n-type and p-type tested planar sensors are able to collect significant charge even after integrated fluences expected at HL-LHC.

Planar Pixel Sensors for the ATLAS Upgrade: Beam Tests results

The development of n-on-p “edgeless” planar pixel sensors being fabricated at FBK (Trento, Italy), aimed at the upgrade of the ATLAS Inner Detector for the High Luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), is reported. A characterizing feature of the devices is the reduced dead area at the edge, achieved by adopting the “active edge” technology, based on a deep etched trench, suitably doped to make an ohmic contact to the substrate. The project is presented, along with the active edge process, the sensor design for this first n-on-p production and a selection of simulation results, including the expected charge collection efficiency after radiation fluence of 1 × 10 15 n eq / cm 2 comparable to those expected at HL-LHC (about ten years of running, with an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb −1 ) for the outer pixel layers. We show that, after irradiation and at a bias voltage of 500 V, more than 50% of the signal should be collected in the edge region; this confirms the validity of the active edge approach.

Development of Edgeless n-on-p Planar Pixel Sensors for future ATLAS Upgrades

A new pixel assembly concept for high energy physics experiments at the HL-LHC is investigated. It answers the challenges posed by the high instantaneous luminosities, resulting in high track densities and radiation damage. It employs five novel technologies: n-in-p pixel sensors, thin pixel sensors, slim edges with or without implanted sensor sides, and 3D-integration incorporating a new interconnection technology, named Solid Liquid InterDiffusion (SLID) as well as Inter-Chip-Vias (ICV).

Investigation of Properties of Novel Silicon Pixel Assemblies Employing Thin n-in-p Sensors and 3D-Integration

An upgrade program is underway to increase the luminosity of the LHC up to about 7.5 × 10 34 cm −2 s −1 in 2027, with the goal of an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb −1 by the end of 2037. This High Luminosity scenario, HL-LHC, presents new challenges of higher data rates and increased radiation hardness for the pixel detector: a non-ionizing fluence of 2.3 × 10 16 n e q /cm 2 an ionizing dose of 12 MGy, is expected on the inner pixel layer for 3000 fb −1 integrated luminosity. To maintain or even improve the performance of the present system, new technologies have to be fully exploited for the so-called Phase-II upgrade. Among them is the future version of front-end chips in 65-nm CMOS by the CERN RD53 Collaboration which supports small pixel sizes of 50 × 50 or 25 × 100 μ m 2 lower thresholds ( ∼ 1000 e − ). For the development of the appropriate planar pixel sensor, CMS has recently launched a submission of n + -p sensors on 6 inch wafers with an active thickness of 150  μ m at Hamamatsu. The submission consists of physically thinned, directly bonded and deep diffused wafers with p-stop or p-spray isolation. A variety of sensors with and without biasing scheme is designed to match the different read-out chips (RD53A, ROC4Sens, etc.) and first hybrid modules are assembled at Fraunhofer IZM. In this document, we will present an overview of the Phase II pixel R&D program and report on preliminary results on the HPK submission.

The existing ATLAS tracker will be at its functional limit for particle fluences of 1015  n eq / cm 2 (LHC) Thus for the upgrades at smaller radii like in the case of the planned Insertable B-Layer (IBL) and for increased LHC luminosities (super LHC) the development of new structures and materials which can cope with the resulting particle fluences is needed n-in-p silicon devices are a promising candidate for tracking detectors to achieve these goals, since they are radiation hard, cost efficient and are not type inverted after irradiation A n-in-p pixel production based on a MPP/HLL design and performed by CiS (Erfurt, Germany) on 300 μ m thick Float-Zone material is characterised and the electrical properties of sensors and single chip modules (SCM) are presented, including noise, charge collection efficiencies, and measurements with MIPs as well as an 241Am source The SCMs are built with sensors connected to the current ATLAS read-out chip FE-I3 The characterisation has been performed with the ATLAS pixel read-out systems, before and after irradiation with 24 GeV/c protons In addition preliminary testbeam results for the tracking efficiency and charge collection, obtained with a SCM, are discussed
