This review article summarizes the last few decades of research on nickel hydroxide, an important material in physics and chemistry, that has many applications in engineering including, significantly, batteries. First, the structures of the two known polymorphs, denoted as α-Ni(OH)2 and β-Ni(OH)2, are described. The various types of disorder, which are frequently present in nickel hydroxide materials, are discussed including hydration, stacking fault disorder, mechanical stresses and the incorporation of ionic impurities. Several related materials are discussed, including intercalated α-derivatives and basic nickel salts. Next, a number of methods to prepare, or synthesize, nickel hydroxides are summarized, including chemical precipitation, electrochemical precipitation, sol-gel synthesis, chemical ageing, hydrothermal and solvothermal synthesis, electrochemical oxidation, microwave-assisted synthesis, and sonochemical methods. Finally, the known physical properties of the nickel hydroxides are reviewed, including their magnetic, vibrational, optical, electrical and mechanical properties. The last section in this paper is intended to serve as a summary of both the potentially useful properties of these materials and the methods for the identification and characterization of 'unknown' nickel hydroxide-based samples.

Nickel hydroxides and related materials: a review of their structures, synthesis and properties.

Adipic acid is an important building block of polymers, and is commercially produced by thermo-catalytic oxidation of ketone-alcohol oil (a mixture of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone). However, this process heavily relies on the use of corrosive nitric acid while releases nitrous oxide as a potent greenhouse gas. Herein, we report an electrocatalytic strategy for the oxidation of cyclohexanone to adipic acid coupled with H2 production over a nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) catalyst modified with sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS). The intercalated SDS facilitates the enrichment of immiscible cyclohexanone in aqueous medium, thus achieving 3.6-fold greater productivity of adipic acid and higher faradaic efficiency (FE) compared with pure Ni(OH)2 (93% versus 56%). This strategy is demonstrated effective for a variety of immiscible aldehydes and ketones in aqueous solution. Furthermore, we design a realistic two-electrode flow electrolyzer for electrooxidation of cyclohexanone coupling with H2 production, attaining adipic acid productivity of 4.7 mmol coupled with H2 productivity of 8.0 L at 0.8 A (corresponding to 30 mA cm-2) in 24 h.

Electrocatalytic synthesis of adipic acid coupled with H2 production enhanced by a ligand modification strategy

Finding a new derivative structure of FeSe-based superconductors with a high superconducting transition temperature (${T}_{c}$) is of great significance. Here, in this work, an organic-ion-[cetyltrimethyl ammonium (${\mathrm{CTA}}^{+}$)]-intercalated FeSe-based superconductor ${(\mathrm{CTA})}_{0.3}\mathrm{FeSe}$ with ${T}_{c}$ as high as 45 K is synthesized by an electrochemical intercalation method. The as-prepared ${(\mathrm{CTA})}_{0.3}\mathrm{FeSe}$ has a hybrid crystal structure consisting of double layers of ${\mathrm{CTA}}^{+}$ and one layer of FeSe, which is consistent with a lateral-bilayer model. The superconductivity of ${(\mathrm{CTA})}_{0.3}\mathrm{FeSe}$ is confirmed by magnetic susceptibility. Furthermore, a negative pressure effect on superconductivity $d{T}_{c}/dP=\ensuremath{-}5$ K/GPa is observed. This is the first pure organic-ion-intercalated FeSe-based superconductor with a high ${T}_{c}$ and high crystallinity. Our work offers a new method to modify the interface interaction between the FeSe layer and the intercalator, and sheds new light on finding new FeSe-based superconductors with higher ${T}_{c}$.

Organic-ion-intercalated FeSe-based superconductors

This work establishes a new method to measure the electrochemically active surface area (AECSA) of nickel electrodes, in situ. The addition of 0.08 mol L−1 of an oxalate salt to an alkaline electrolyte solution shifts the half-wave potential of the Ni(II)/Ni(III) redox pair by about −80 mV. Further, these peaks are very narrow. The sharpest peak in this work has a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of just 11 mV. This unusual sharpness is attributed to the layered structure of nickel hydroxides and the adsorption of oxalate from the solution on the (001) surface. This is supported by attenuated total reflectance infrared (ATR-IR) peaks measured at 1265 cm−1, 1655 cm−1, and 1713 cm−1, which correspond to mononuclear bidentate oxalate bonded to nickel. At sufficiently fast potential scan rates (≥150 mV s−1), the adsorbed oxalate limits growth of the surface hydroxide to a single layer. During the reverse scan, the surface NiOOH/Ni(OH)2 reduction peak is well-separated from other electrochemical processes and may be used to accurately and precisely measure the AECSA. An Oxalate Method for Measuring the Surface Area of Nickel Electrodes

Nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide ultrathin nanosheets coated on reduced graphene oxide nonosheets/nickel foam for high performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Nickel hydroxide films were electrosynthesized in the presence of different diluted surfactant solutions by galvanostatic electroprecipitation. Lamellar α-Ni(OH)2 films are obtained using cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and also neutral surfactant Tween® 80. The films were structurally and morphologically characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, and electrochemically by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). The results evidenced that SDS remains intercalated between the lamellae of α-Ni(OH)2. Albeit the presence of CTAB and Tween® 80, it was noticed in FTIR spectra that the surfactants did not intercalate. The morphology was affected by the presence of different surfactants. All studied surfactants displaced the oxidation potential (E
 O) of Ni2+/Ni3+ process to less positive values. Also, the presence of surfactants improved the electrode charge efficiency and the charge response for the same number of moles of nickel ions deposited. The ratio of the charge and frequency change is 4.4 times bigger for films deposited with SDS when compared with pure α-Ni(OH)2 films.

Surfactant effect on electrochemical-induced synthesis of α-Ni(OH)2

A method for the determination of orphenadrine (ORPH), paracetamol (PAR) and caffeine (CAF) using HPLC was developed. The proposed method provides an easy sample preparation and low cost using a mobile phase consisting of 80% of water with direct determination of the active principles present in pharmaceutical formulations. The separation of ORPH, PAR and CAF was accomplished on a C18 colu at 5 ̊C at a flo ate of . L i -1 using acetonitrile/water (pH 2.5) as mobile phase (20:80, v/v). The method exhibits linear responses for ORPH, PAR and CAF in the concentration ranges of 0 – 150 mg L, 0 – 200 mg L and 0 – 200 mg L, respectively. The detection limits and quantification determined according to IUPAC recommendation were found to be 1.14 and 3.79 mg L -1 for ORPH, 0.05 and 0.17 mg L -1 for PAR and 0.02 and 0.07 mg L -1 for CAF. Recoveries varying from 98.02 up to 101.81% for two pharmaceutical formulations spiked with these analytes were achieved assuring the accuracy of the proposed method.

Development of HPLC Method for Quantification of Orphenadrine, Paracetamol, and Caffeine in Pharmaceutical Formulations

In the present study an anodic stripping voltammetric method using a bismuth film modified carbon nanotubes paste electrode for simultaneous determination of metals Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ in ethanol fuel is described. The metallic ions were preconcentrated on the bismuth film in the time and deposition potential of 500 s and -1.2 V and the stripping step was carried out by square wave voltammetry (frequency of 15 Hz, pulse amplitude of 25 mV and potential step of 5 mV). Acetate buffer at 0.1 mol L -1 concentration and pH 4.5 was used as support electrolyte. The method showed linearity including the analytical blank up to 48.39 µg L -1 for the metals and the obtained limits of detection were 3.36, 0.32 and 0.47 µg L -1 for Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ , respectively. The proposed method was applied in ethanol fuel samples.
