Auranofin and Cold Atmospheric Plasma Synergize to Trigger Distinct Cell Death Mechanisms and Immunogenic Responses in Glioblastoma.
Jinthe Van Loenhout,Laurie Freire Boullosa,Delphine Quatannens,Jorrit De Waele,Céline Merlin,Hilde A. J. Lambrechts,Ho Wa Lau,Christophe Hermans,Abraham Lin,Filip Lardon,Marc Peeters,Annemie Bogaerts,Evelien Smits,Christophe Deben +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-inducing combination treatment strategy, by increasing exogenous ROS via cold atmospheric plasma and inhibiting the endogenous protective antioxidant system via auranofin (AF), a thioredoxin reductase 1 (TrxR) inhibitor.

Explorative genetic study of UBQLN2 and PFN1 in an extended Flanders-Belgian cohort of frontotemporal lobar degeneration patients
Lubina Dillen,Lubina Dillen,Tim Van Langenhove,Tim Van Langenhove,Sebastiaan Engelborghs,Mathieu Vandenbulcke,Mathieu Vandenbulcke,Stayko Sarafov,Ivailo Tournev,Ivailo Tournev,Céline Merlin,Céline Merlin,Patrick Cras,Rik Vandenberghe,Rik Vandenberghe,Peter Paul De Deyn,Albena Jordanova,Albena Jordanova,Albena Jordanova,Marc Cruts,Marc Cruts,Christine Van Broeckhoven,Christine Van Broeckhoven,Julie van der Zee,Julie van der Zee +24 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that genetic variations in UBQLN2 and PFN1 in a predominantly Flanders-Belgian cohort of FTLD and ALS patients are extremely rare.

Genetic variability in SQSTM1 and risk of early-onset Alzheimer dementia: a European early-onset dementia consortium study
Elise Cuyvers,Julie van der Zee,Karolien Bettens,Sebastiaan Engelborghs,Mathieu Vandenbulcke,Caroline Robberecht,Lubina Dillen,Céline Merlin,Nathalie Geerts,Caroline Graff,Caroline Graff,Håkan Thonberg,Håkan Thonberg,Huei Hsin Chiang,Pau Pastor,Pau Pastor,Sara Ortega-Cubero,Sara Ortega-Cubero,Maria A. Pastor,Maria A. Pastor,Janine Diehl-Schmid,Panagiotis Alexopoulos,Luisa Benussi,Roberta Ghidoni,Giuliano Binetti,Benedetta Nacmias,Sandro Sorbi,Raquel Sánchez-Valle,Albert Lladó,Ellen Gelpi,Maria Rosário Almeida,Isabel Santana,Jordi Clarimón,Jordi Clarimón,Alberto Lleó,Alberto Lleó,Juan Fortea,Juan Fortea,Alexandre de Mendonça,Madalena Martins,Barbara Borroni,Alessandro Padovani,Radoslav Matěj,Zdenek Rohan,Agustín Ruiz,Giovanni B. Frisoni,Gian Maria Fabrizi,Rik Vandenberghe,Peter Paul De Deyn,Christine Van Broeckhoven,Kristel Sleegers +50 more
TL;DR: Data indicate that SQSTM1 does not play a major role in the etiology of EOAD, and burden analysis did not reveal an increased frequency of rare variants in EOAD patients in any of the separate study populations nor when meta-analyzing all cohorts.

The Search for an Interesting Partner to Combine with PD-L1 Blockade in Mesothelioma: Focus on TIM-3 and LAG-3.
Elly Marcq,Jonas Van Audenaerde,Jorrit De Waele,Céline Merlin,Patrick Pauwels,Jan P. van Meerbeeck,Scott A. Fisher,Evelien Smits +7 more
TL;DR: It is found that monotherapy with an immune checkpoint blocking antibodies against programmed death-1 (PD-1), and its combination with another blocking antibody against lymphocyte activation gene-3 (LAG-3), resulted in delayed tumor growth and survival benefit in the authors' mice.

Auranofin Synergizes with the PARP Inhibitor Olaparib to Induce ROS-Mediated Cell Death in Mutant p53 Cancers
Laurie Freire Boullosa,Jinthe Van Loenhout,Tal Flieswasser,Christophe Hermans,Céline Merlin,Ho Wa Lau,Elly Marcq,Marlies Verschuuren,Winnok H. De Vos,Filip Lardon,Evelien Smits,Christophe Deben +11 more
TL;DR: Auranofin (AF) is a potent, off-patent thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) inhibitor that efficiently targets cancer via reactive oxygen species (ROS)- and DNA damage-mediated cell death as mentioned in this paper .
