No Aging in India: Alzheimer's, the Bad Family, and Other Modern Things

Perhaps the author should have worked a little harder than this statement implies at providing a rationale for the delineation of his region of study (and it would have been good to be told a little about his field methods at the same time) ? My main regret in reading this otherwise admirable piece of work was that it concentrated exclusively on the southernmost part of Benin, as if cleanly amputated not only from the rest of the coastal region to the east and west but also from the rest of Dahomey and the modern Benin state. There is considerable unity in diversity, modern as well as pre-colonial, throughout the region from southern Ghana to lit. Cameroun, and Mondjannagni might usefully have drawn attention to some of this present-day common ground, especially in the context of rural development experience, had he been willing to change focus and scale from time to time. His bibliographical coverage of relevant Xigerian material has several gaps, and literature on Ghana and Togo is hardly drawn upon at all. Incidentally, one or two studies in English on southern Benin are missing from the otherwise comprehensive bibliographical coverage of the specified region, e.g. Argyle's book on Dahomey. Nevertheless, despite these minor qualifications, all geographers interested in Benin or neighbouring areas will find the present Volume of value.

by Jennifer S Hirsch Berkeley, CA-university of california Press, 2003, 376 pp A Courtship After Marriage provides a fascinating look at social change among Mexican families Jennifer Hirsch skillfully documents how the shift to modernity has changed the face of Latino intimate relationships, including love, sexuality, conceptions of gender, and the meaning and practice of marriage Her book is based on a study of transnational families who are connected both to Atlanta, Georgia, and one of two neighboring communities in Mexico Some families own property in both countries; others do not but move from one country to the other for work Thus, Hirsch has focused on a group of migrants who feel and act both Mexican and American, which challenges earlier research over simplistic notions about identity and assimilation The economic and social contexts of Mexico and the United States differ radically, and Hirsch's subjects live in both worlds Her ethnography reveals the consequences of these differences for the intimate family relationships of men and women Hirsch developed extensive life histories from 13 women in each location, visiting each at least eight times The descriptions of the research context and the methods used to collect her data provide a rich background to her study Life histories were organized into six topical interviews, including (1) childhood and family life; (2) social networks, migration, and differences between life in the United States and Mexico; (3) gender, earning and spending money, and the household division of labor; (4) menstruation, reproduction, and fertility control; (5) reproductive health, STDs, and infidelity; and (6) dating, marriage, and sexuality Interviews were conducted in both Atlanta and Mexico; in Atlanta she often conducted interviews while assisting women with errands, such as driving them to the doctor In Mexico she provided transportation to weekly rosary In many ways Hirsch became an important fixture in their communities and their lives Her initial intention was to interview each woman's husband, but the sex segregation among Mexicans made this virtually impossible Unrelated men and women typically do not interact with one another; private interviews violated the tradition of separate spheres and made both Hirsch and the respondents highly uncomfortable Consequently, Hirsch was forced to make a significant but understandable compromise: to gain the trust of married women, she could interact little with men Thus, she was afforded only a rare glimpse into the male social world Instead, she focused her fieldwork on women and their mothers Therefore, her analysis of men in family relationships, including their attitudes, behaviors, and norms, are most often filtered through the lens of the women in their lives This distinction is important because the book is purportedly about sexuality and love in Mexican transnational families, not simply about women's experience and interpretations within these families Despite that caveat, I found this book to be a fascinating story of social change We see dramatic differences in "ideal" relationships between older and younger women …

A Courtship after Marriage: Sexuality and Love in Mexican Transnational Families

The number of migrants has risen rapidly in the past few years for various reasons: job opportunities, labor shortages resulting from falling birth rates, internal conflict and war, natural disasters, climate change, and improved access to information through phone and the Internet. The migration and remittances fact book 2016 provides a comprehensive picture of emigration, immigration, and remittance flows for 214 countries and territories and 15 country groups, drawing on authoritative, publicly available data. The current edition of the fact book updates the information in the 2011 edition with data collected from various sources, including national censuses, labor force surveys, and population registers. In addition, for each country and regional grouping from the World Bank’s world development indicators, it provides selected socioeconomic characteristics such as population, labor force, age-dependency ratio, gross national income per capita, and poverty headcount.

Over the past 20 years, organizations to provide commercial nursing services, mainly to the sick and debilitated elderly, have sprung up in Accra, Ghana. This article assesses the degree to which transnational migration has generated social changes in ageing at the level of everyday practices. It argues that a range of social actors differently involved in transnational migration has created and sustained a market for home nursing agencies in Ghana through diverse processes involving the imagination of care work abroad, complex negotiations between the elderly at home and their anxious children abroad, increased financial resources among the middle class and the evaluations of western eldercare services by return and current migrants. These dynamics illustrate the complexity of the role of transnational migration in generating social change and highlight the significance of the needs of local families and the role of the imagination in shaping social remittances from abroad.

Transnational migration and the commodification of eldercare in urban Ghana

International migration tends to result in translocal households located in two or more places, entailing the separation of kin from one another, whether husbands from wives, parents from children, or siblings from siblings. Despite the distance, kin remain connected through remittances, phone conversations, shipments of packages, and occasional visits. A growing literature is concerned with how this separation is affecting kinship ideologies and practice as a way of understanding what is new and different about contemporary global flows of people, goods, and wealth. The focus in this research literature, so far, has been on dyadic bonds between parent and child and between spouses (for example, Gamburd 2000; Hondagneu-Sotelo 1994; Levitt 2001; Olwig 1999; Parrenas 2004; Pribilsky 2007; Suarez-Orozco, Todorova, and Louie 2002). Siblings have been largely neglected in this literature, perhaps because scholars have operated from a Western model of the nuclear family, in which marital and parent-child relations are considered more intense than those involving siblings. However, communicating with, financially supporting, and receiving help from distant siblings are a significant part of migrants’ transnational strategies, particularly in communities where siblings have historically had conceptual and practical importance (Drotbohm 2009, Olwig 2007). Even in communities where sibling relationships are not as profound, siblings can be a significant source of financial and emotional support for three reasons. For one, sibling relationships are potentially more long lasting than other familial relationships.1 Second, they generate connection across personal differences, and finally, they are intertwined with significant relationships to parents, children, and spouses.

Transnational Migration and Changes in Sibling Support in Ghana

In contemporary Ghana, adult children are considered responsible for the care of aged parents. Within this idealized framework, two aspects of eldercare are overlooked. Firstly, such a narrative obscures the role of non-kin and extended kin in providing eldercare in southern Ghana historically and in the present. Secondly, it hides the negotiations over obligations and commitments between those who manage eldercare and those who help with an ageing person’s daily activities. It is in this latter role that non-kin and extended kin are significant in eldercare, while closer kin maintain their kin roles through the management, financial support and recruitment of others. This article examines recruitment to eldercare and the role of kin and non-kin in eldercare in three historical periods: the 1860s, the 1990s and the 2000s, centred on Akuapem, in southern Ghana. In particular, I show that helping an aged person relies on previous and expected entrustments, in which more vulnerable, dependent and indebted persons are most likely to be recruited to provide care. Resume: Dans le Ghana contemporain, les enfants adultes sont consideres comme responsables de la prise en charge de leurs parents âges. Dans ce cadre idealise, deux aspects des soins aux personnes âgees sont occultes. Premierement, ce cadre eclipse le role historique et actuel des non-parents et de la famille etendue dans la prise en charge des personnes âgees dans le sud du Ghana. Deuxiemement, il masque les negociations sur les obligations et les engagements menees entre ceux qui gerent les soins aux personnes âgees et ceux qui aident une personne âgee dans ses activites quotidiennes. C’est dans ce dernier role que les non-parents et la famille etendue sont importants en matiere de soins aux personnes âgees, tandis que la famille proche maintient son role de parente a travers la gestion, le soutien financier et le recrutement d’autres personnes. Cet article examine le recrutement et le role des parents et non-parents en matiere de soins aux personnes âgees a trois periodes historiques: les annees 1860, 1990 et 2000, dans la region d’Akuapem, dans le sud du Ghana. En particulier, l’auteur montre que l’acte d’aider une personne âgee repose sur des actes de confiance precedents et attendus dans lesquels des personnes plus vulnerables, dependantes et redevables sont plus susceptibles d’etre recrutees pour soigner.
