Social barriers to the adoption of smart homes

Published research on smart homes and their users is growing exponentially, yet a clear understanding of who these users are and how they might use smart home technologies is missing from a field being overwhelmingly pushed by technology developers. Through a systematic analysis of peer-reviewed literature on smart homes and their users, this paper takes stock of the dominant research themes and the linkages and disconnects between them. Key findings within each of nine themes are analysed, grouped into three: (1) views of the smart home--functional, instrumental, socio-technical; (2) users and the use of the smart home--prospective users, interactions and decisions, using technologies in the home; and (3) challenges for realising the smart home--hardware and software, design, domestication. These themes are integrated into an organising framework for future research that identifies the presence or absence of cross-cutting relationships between different understandings of smart homes and their users. The usefulness of the organising framework is illustrated in relation to two major concerns--privacy and control--that have been narrowly interpreted to date, precluding deeper insights and potential solutions. Future research on smart homes and their users can benefit by exploring and developing cross-cutting relationships between the research themes identified.

DESPITE THE RECENT DRAMATIC TRENDS IN THE DIFfusion of information technology, the significance of these developments is still not clear. Also lacking is a critical understanding of these developments and a sound theoretical and empirical base from which to observe and analyze them. Computers and other interactive technologies for the home : The Internet @ home

Smart homes will be a key component of smart grids which can make significant contributions to Europe's transition to a low-carbon energy system. A growing literature on smart meters and demand side programmes focuses on the energy consumption and management services that smart homes offer. However, they can deliver much broader types of services, including assisted living, health and security. By including these non-energy aspects, this paper reveals differences in perceptions of smart homes in a cross-country comparative context to inform the delivery of smart home services. Public perceptions on the role of utilities and government in particular are important factors to be taken into account. The research highlights that policies should leave all paths open due to due to differences in householder preferences and acceptance of smart homes. Further implications for service delivery and planning are highlighted, calling for more interdisciplinary research in this area.

A comparison of consumer perceptions towards smart homes in the UK, Germany and Italy: reflections for policy and future research

Personal energy consumption, specifically home energy consumption such as heating, cooling, and electricity, has been an important environmental and economic topic for decades. Despite the attention paid to this area, few researchers have specifically explored these issues within a community that makes up approximately 30% of U.S. households -- those below the federal poverty line. We present a study of 26 low-income households in two very different locations -- a small town in the Southern U.S. and a northerly metropolitan area. Through a photo-elicitation study and directed interviews, we explore the relationship between energy saving behaviors, external factors, and users' intrinsic values and beliefs. Most of our participants are committed to saving energy for non-financial reasons, even when not responsible for paying bills. Challenges to saving energy include safety and lack of control over the environment. We discuss how Ubicomp technologies for saving energy can address some of these challenges.

It's not all about "Green": energy use in low-income communities

Smart Home technology looks set to become an increasingly common feature of domestic life. However commercial desire for technical innovation rather than explicit user needs are often the driving force behind the development of Smart Home products and services. This study adapts the Cultural Probe approach developed by Gaver et al. [2] to collect primarily visual data about what people value within their home environment. Whereas Cultural Probes are predominantly used to build empathy with users when designing product concepts, this approach attempted to provide similarly fun and engaging prompts for data collection when the design process and project context required more structured consideration of user needs. This paper presents the method developed, project findings and recommendations on how the method should be applied.
