Nitrogen-containing ligands for asymmetric homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis.

Defined oxidative transformations of alkenes offer a versatile route to higher-functionalised organic entities. While processes such as dihydroxylation and aminohydroxylation have reached a remarkable level of efficiency with regard to substrate scope and enantioselection, the related process of diamination has received only scant attention. This perspective summarises recent results in the development of asymmetric diamination of alkenes employing bis- and tris(imido)osmium oxidants. Two different asymmetric courses were developed which consist of diastereoselective diamination employing chiral auxiliaries and enantioselective diamination in the presence of a chiral metal catalyst. The diamination products are obtained as monomeric diamine-ligated osmium complexes of unprecedented stability, and all results from these studies represent a completely new chapter in osmium-mediated alkene oxidation.

The competency framework attached to the Life science engineering Master at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, University of Liege (Belgium) is composed of technical and scientific skills but also soft skills which are not connected to academic courses. For the training of these skills, university needs the collaboration of the professional world. Therefore, the role of our teachers evolves towards a guiding or mentoring role. They will help students to analyse their professional experiences in order to shape their professional identity, to bring to light their acquired skills. This article describes how the portfolio, used as internship’s report, will help students to gain the self-confidence about their abilities and how professors can use these reflexive analyses to evaluate the acquisition of these soft skills.

Soft Skills: how to make the young engineers aware of their new talents?

We will describe the different stages involved in the collaborative construction of an organic chemical ontology by chemists. We will disclose our experience, as chemists, in learning, how to build a collaborative ontology and how to use the ontology software from that of an artificial intelligence scientist. We will then disclose our work in developing the protocols to work within the community of chemists to build a collaborative ontology. Useful perceptions about the use of the ontology will also be discussed.
