The Geneva Convention on the Status of Refugees is central to scholar-ship on refugee and asylum issues. It is the primary basis upon which asylumseekers make their claims to the majority of host states today and, as a key text ofthe human rights framework, has come to be associated with the very idea of auniversalised rights-bearing human being. Yet British asylum policy today is char-acterized by efforts to limit access to the right to asylum. Many scholars believe thisis because asylum seekers today are different, in character and number, to previouscohorts of applicants. This article goes back to the founding of the refugee rightsregime and investigates the exclusions of colonized peoples from access to the rightto asylum. Using Chimni’s concept of the “myth of difference”, the article demon-strates that asylum seekers have long existed outside of Europe, and that theirexclusion from international rights has been both longstanding and intentional. Thishistorical sociology suggests that the basis for critical work on the issue of asylumpolicy today must be one which takes colonial histories into account.

Colonialism, Decolonisation, and the Right to be Human: Britain and the 1951 Geneva Convention on the Status of Refugees

Voting Rights of Refugees develops a novel legal argument about the voting rights of refugees recognised in the 1951 Geneva Convention. The main normative contention is that such refugees should have the right to vote in the political community where they reside, assuming that this community is a democracy and that its citizens have the right to vote. The book argues that recognised refugees are a special category of non-citizen residents: they are unable to participate in elections of their state of origin, do not enjoy its diplomatic protection and consular assistance abroad, and are unable or unwilling, owing to a well-founded fear of persecution, to return to it. Refugees deserve to have a place in the world, in the Arendtian sense, where their opinions are significant and their actions are effective. Their state of asylum is the only community in which there is any prospect of political participation on their part.

Voting Rights of Refugees

Scholars assume that transnational terrorism has culminated in policy securitization with expansive restrictions on migration. I evaluate the impact of transnational terrorism on asylum recognition among European Union and Schengen member-states from 1980 until 2007. I unpack the impact of terrorism according to the location of incidents. The article illustrates that policy tightening is more pronounced when recipient states experience terrorism on their own soil or against their citizens. In contrast, measuring transnational terrorism as attacks worldwide mutes the impact of security concerns. The findings show that policy stringency is not directed against particular sources of terrorism and demonstrates that the humanitarian principles underpinning asylum recognition have not been eroded by terrorism. The article thus represents an important step in differentiating between channels of impact whereby transnational terror shapes policy outcomes.

Do asylum recognition rates in Europe respond to transnational terrorism? The migration-security nexus revisited

This research investigates Internet uses and the potentials for transnational connections, for the development of a sense of nationalism, and for the construction of identity. Its focal point is on the case of the Nigerian diaspora. Though focussing mainly on the Internet, the role of other media are also highlighted in order to understand the
complexities of long distance communication and the meanings of mediated connection within the broader context of international communications. The work analyses migrant
uses and appropriations of media and communication technologies that enable a triangular framework of possibilities (i.) for longing and belonging, (ii.) for connecting migrants with Nigeria and (iii.) for shaping diasporic connections among the migrants in transnational and national contexts. The project employs qualitative and quantitative research methods, which include interviews, participant observation and survey, in an attempt to locate the practices and the meanings of Internet connections and online media activities.

Internet and diasporic communication : dispersed Nigerians and the mediation of distance, longing and belonging

This paper explores the antecedents, experiences and consequences of marginalization as reported and dealt with by disabled Iranian immigrants in Belgium. This work extends the work of Gallie and colleagues and Siegrist demonstrating that the forces of marginalization applicable to all immigrants are particularly pertinent to disabled immigrants. The research is based on 26 in‐depth, face‐to‐face interviews, focus groups, interviews with government officials and immigration experts, ethnographic work and official government statistics. The findings detail how the combined forces of history, context and reasons for immigration; isolation, vulnerability and perceived loss of control; religion and rejection; lack of reciprocity in social exchanges; problems in obtaining jobs; and difficulties in negotiating an entry into Belgian society combine to sustain marginizalation.
