This chapter explores the ecology of human development, those forces in the person's environment that affect and influence development. Urie Bronfenbrenner's model of the human ecosystem guides the discussion, making connections between children in families and in communities and the larger society that surrounds them. The human ecosystem model is much like the study of the natural ecology, focusing on the interactions between subjects at various levels of the environment as they affect each other. The interaction between individual and environment forms the basis of an ecological approach to human development. This view sees the process of development as the expansion of the child's conception of the world and the child's ability to act on that world. Risks to development can come from both direct threats and the absence of opportunities for development. Sociocultural risk refers to the impoverishment in the child's world of essential experiences and relationships.

Debemos de considerar al libro Pedagogia del Oprimido, como una pedagogia humanista y liberadora, la cual cuenta con dos momentos distintos, el primero en que los oprimido descubren el mundo de la opresion y se van comprometiendo en la praxis con su transformacion, y el segundo, en el que una vez que se trasforma la realidad opresora, esta pedagogia deja de ser del oprimido y pasa a ser la pedagogia de los hombres en el proceso permanente de la liberacion.

This paper takes the opportunity of the current child welfare system change in Ireland to promote the value of learning from history to better understand the interface between family support and child protection. The paper draws from the histories of child protection and family support to illuminate the commonalities and differences that have come to define the two practices. Using findings from two historical studies – one on family support and the other on child protection – the paper demonstrates the unique features and the many integrated elements of family support and child protection in Ireland. It is argued that students and practitioners need to be provided with a stronger sense of the historical developments that have shaped the present. This will enable comprehension of the complex context within which current relations between ‘protection’ and ‘support’ are negotiated and help to avoid operating in a vacuum of a present only viewpoint. The paper concludes with reference to the need for students and practitioners to navigate the complex relationship between family support and child protection at practice, policy and organizational level through a well-informed knowledge of the historical as well as the present context.

What works in family support

This paper investigates whether children’s academic self-beliefs are associated withreadingachievementandwhethertherelationshipismodiﬁedbygenderand/orage.Datawerecollectedfromchildrenatrisk ofreadingfailure,thatis, emergentreaders(6-to8-year-olds)insocioeconomicallydisadvantagedareasreadingatalevelbelowthepop-ulationmean.Theauthors’ownmeasureofattitudetoreadingandperceivedcompetencewas used. The study found a signiﬁcant positive association between attitude to readingin class and vocabulary and phonemic awareness and a signiﬁcant negative associationbetween perceivedcompetence at readinginclass andsingle-word readingandspelling.Girls’attitudetoreadingandperceivedcompetenceweremorepositivelyassociatedwithreadingachievement,andthiswasmostevidentintheﬁrstgrade.Perceivedcompetencewas inﬂated among those with the poorest reading and also among boys, in associationwith reading-related skills found most challenging by children in this sample.Children’s academicself-beliefscan besigniﬁcantly associated withreading achievement,asvarious studies have shown (Chapman, Tunmer,& Prochnow, 2000;Coddington & Guthrie,2009;Guthrie,Wigﬁeld,Metsala,CHansfordHLoganJMarsh, 2002;Marsh & Craven, 2006; Marsh & O’Mara, 2008; Mata, 2011;Mucherah& Yoder, 2008; Pullmann & Allik, 2008; Valentine, DuBois, & Cooper, 2004). Understand-ably, there is growing interest in both the factors that might in ﬂuence changes in children’sacademic self-beliefs and the components shaping its interaction with reading achievement(Petscher, 2010). However, conceptualising and measuring self-belief create their ownchallenges. First, children’s self-belief is increasingly seen as multidimensional (Valentineet al., 2004). Family Support is a transdisciplinary field made up of practices and knowledge from different areas, theories and approaches. This article strives to contribute to the development of this complex epistemological foundation by undertaking a review of the main theoretical frameworks. The relationship between the practice and theory of Family Support is analysed in the paper. A review of the ‘state of the art’ is undertaken, exploring both the role of wide-ranging social theory, and more specific psycho-social theories. Practical examples are provided to ground the analysis. Finally, the article proposes an integrated model proposed providing a critical and versatile approach to understanding different realities. Cross-national joint construction is encouraged to advance Family Support as both a theory and to provide a framework which guides both practice and policy.
