A very high level of security is integrated into a mass storage device the user has for purposes other than two factor authentication, and the convenience of highly secure password management also comes in a convenient pocket sized package easy for the user to transport. This facilitates the acceptance of two factor authentication, and increases security for a wide variety of online transactions.

A provisioning (or “cobbler”) server can interact with a local virtual machine installation client to initiate software provisioning to a set of virtual machines. In conjunction with the provisioning process, the virtual machine installation client can identify and access a set of storage resources, such as hard disk or other storage, to be associated with the set of virtual machines, which themselves contain no local storage. That client can determine an allocation of the set of storage resources to each virtual machine in the set of virtual machines, for instance on a pro-rata basis or based on processing consumption or other factors.

The embedded agent causes the shared key to be stored in a secure storage not directly accessible by the host. When the host wants to transmit enciphered data, the embedded agent may provide access to cryptographic services. The embedded agent provides isolation of the shared key from parts of the host that are subject to compromise by attack or infection.

In one embodiment a verification agent accesses a portion of a memory on the platform at initialization of the platform to determine if the data has been compromised or corrupted. The verification agent causes the information to be transmitted to a remote system. The verification agent may be local to the platform for which integrity is determined, and transmit the information to a remote administrator. Alternatively, the agent may access the platform over a bus or private channel, or a network connection and indicate information regarding the verification process to an entity remote to the tested platform.
