This chapter examines new migration movements to Brazil from neighboring South American countries. It explores this topic by conducting ethnographic work on female amateur soccer teams of Bolivian migrants in the neighborhood of Bom Retiro in Sao Paulo. This chapter argues that soccer becomes a space of belonging in the context of migration. The rise of amateur soccer teams and tournaments for Latin American migrants is a common phenomenon not only in Brazil but also in the United States and in major European cities. For migrants, soccer represents an appropriation of space for cultural and community gatherings, whereby the shared origin from a specific nation, region and sometimes even locality is expressed. This appropriation of space, it is posited, is closely linked to cross-cultural strategies: in the case of this study, migrants integrate into Brazilian culture since amateur soccer is a widespread and popular sport in Brazil. Thus, migrant soccer can be interpreted both as a means to maintain or reshape migrants’ sense of belonging to their community of origin and a means of integration into the host society.

Negotiating spaces of urban sports and belonging: migrant football leagues in São Paulo and Rio De Janeiro

In this article, I reflect upon the ways in which Peruvians in Rio de Janeiro negotiate their process of racialization, based on the category Indian and their interaction with me, a Black Brazilian woman. Despite the fact that Indian is part of both the Brazilian and Peruvian racial classification system, this category has particular meanings in each context. When they “discover” they are Indians”, Peruvians face the specificities of anti-Indigenous racism in the urban context of Rio de Janeiro. They also deal with discrimination within the Peruvian community. This article analyzes the case of Peruvians who create self-definitions (Hill-Collins, 2016), both individually and collectively, that challenge stereotypes of peruanidad. Racialization also opens up possibilities for anti-racist solidarity between Peruvians and Black Brazilians. My research is based on ethnographic fieldwork carried out in Brazil and the United States from 2011 to 2016.

A Copa Peru-Rio e um campeonato de futebol organizado por imigrantes peruanos que residem no Rio de Janeiro. O evento acontece todos os anos ao longo do mes julho, tendo como principal motivacao celebrar o "dia de la patria", o dia da independencia do Peru. Reunidos em torno deste simbolo nacional, os peruanos no Rio de Janeiro fazem do futebol, esporte admirado tanto no pais de origem como no de destino, um instrumento para construir espacos de interacao e de sociabilidade no contexto de imigracao. Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a Copa Peru-Rio como um evento que, alem da dimensao ludica, tem a capacidade de agregar peruanos que encontram no futebol uma oportunidade para se familiarizar com o espaco da cidade e se (re)territorializar na experiencia migratoria. Entendendo a (re)territorializacao como a possibilidade de se apropriar simbolicamente do territorio (HAESBERT, 2006), este trabalho analisa que, na Copa Peru-Rio, os peruanos reafirmam uma origem nacional especifica, diferente da brasileira. Nesta origem nacional reivindicada, as diferencas regionais, de genero e de raca nao desaparecem: elas sao ressignificadas no convivio entre peruanos, brasileiros e estrangeiros de outras nacionalidades e sao expressas na dinâmica do campeonato. O presente trabalho se baseia na observacao participante realizada na Copa Peru-Rio nas edicoes de 2011 e 2012 e no trabalho de campo etnografico realizado de abril de 2011 a dezembro de 2012.

Territorialidades migrantes: um estudo antropológico sobre a Copa Peru‐Rio

EnglishThis paper will examine how Peruvians who arrived in Rio de Janeiro as university students (re)construct meanings about what it is like “to be a Peruvian" in Brazil. Escaping from the false dilemma between preserving the identity of origin or acculturating, students make a critical appropriation of Brazilian elements, while re-evaluating the Peruvian aspects of their identity, (re)forcing some and relativizing others. In this dynamic, Peruvian food, dance and music are activated as diacritical elements (BARTH, 2000) that allow the identification of students with other Peruvians in Rio de Janeiro, despite their differences. On the other hand, the strangeness student suffer by Brazilians, due to, for example, their accent, plays an important role in this process. The notion of migratory experience (DANIEL, 2013) will guide this analysis. This work is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2011 and 2012. portuguesEste trabalho examinara como os peruanos que chegaram ao Rio de Janeiro como estudantes universitarios (re)constroem sentidos sobre o que e “ser peruano” no Brasil. Escapando do falso dilema entre preservar a identidade de origem ou se aculturar, os estudantes fazem uma apropriacao critica de elementos brasileiros, ao mesmo tempo em que (re)avaliam os aspectos peruanos de sua identidade, (re)forcando alguns e relativizando outros. Nesta dinâmica, a comida, a danca e a musica peruanas sao ativadas como elementos diacriticos (BARTH, 2000) que possibilitam a identificacao dos estudantes com outros peruanos no Rio de Janeiro, a despeito de suas diferencas. Por outro lado, o estranhamento que sofrem pelos brasileiros, por exemplo, pelo seu sotaque, desempenha um importante papel neste processo. A nocao de experiencia migratoria (DANIEL, 2013) balizara esta analise. Este trabalho se baseia no trabalho de campo etnografico realizado entre 2011 e de 2012.

Peruanidad(es) no Brasil: a construção de identidades na experiência migratória de estudantes peruanos no Rio de Janeiro

This article analyzes the work of Victoria Santa Cruz as a decolonial epistemology. The artist, theater director and Afro-Peruvian intellectual was a pioneer in the research, recreation and performance of Afro-Peruvian cultural expressions. From her experience, she founded an epistemology that practices the Black arts as a claim to afro-peruanidad as part of the national identity. They were also a way of producing (self) knowledge that challenges the division between mind, body and emotion characteristic of modern metaphysics. In the “inner rhythm” epistemology, Victoria expands the possible significance of traditional cultural manifestations, including Black ones. They are seen as form to spread her thoughts and encouraging the decolonization of being. This article establishes the dialogue between Victoria, Black intellectuals in the diaspora and my trajectory as a Black Brazilian anthropologist working with Peruvian immigrants. Thus, we understand the importance of the Black experience to decolonize the Anthropology of dance, body and emotions.
