Pay and Organizational Effectiveness: A Psychological View

Screen media occupy an increasing role in young children's play and learning environments. This paper advances the current discussion of the changing digital lives of children, with new insights of media use in the homes of Australian families (N = 406). Parents reported their child's technology ownership, engagement with traditional and new media, joint media engagement, as well as children's preferences and quantity of media use. From 2014 to 2017, cross‐sectional data were collected via media use questionnaire from families with a child 8 years of age or younger. Of all the media activities, children most frequently participated in reading (paper‐based or eBooks) and watching television. Children's touchscreen use indicated a variety of choices from the “digital toy box,” referring to the numerous apps available and their potential to serve as a medium for play. This data can inform policy and practice of researchers, educators and family engagement specialists and optimize early learning potential prior to formal schooling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gender Pay Gaps in U.S. Federal Science Agencies: An Organizational Approach1

Many countries use college-major-specific admissions policies that require a student to choose a college-major pair jointly. Given the potential of student-major mismatches, we explore the equilibrium effects of postponing student choice of major.We develop a sorting equilibrium model under the collegemajor- specific admissions regime, allowing for match uncertainty and peer effects.We estimate the model using Chilean data.We introduce the counterfactual regime as a Stackelberg game in which a social planner chooses college-specific admissions policies and students make enrolment decisions, learn about their fits to various majors before choosing one. Our estimates indicate that switching from the baseline to the counterfactual regime leads to a 1% increase in average student welfare and that it is more likely to benefit female, low-income and/or low-ability students.

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Civilian Acquisition Workforce Personnel Demonstration Project (AcqDemo) is an effort to reengineer the civilian personnel system to meet the needs of the acquisition workforce and to facilitate the fulfillment of the DoD acquisition mission. Congress required independent assessment of the program against 12 criteria by September 30, 2012. This report is that legislatively mandated assessment.

An Assessment of the Civilian Acquisition Workforce Personnel Demonstration Project

Extra-large portions served at restaurants put consumers at risk of overweight and obesity, including children. Developing standards for portions sizes for kids' menus could reduce the risk that children will be served more food than they need for normal growth. We reviewed the calorie content of foods offered on kids' menus at franchised restaurants and US Department of Agriculture published recipes for use in schools. Using an expert panel, we developed recommendations for portion sizes for different food categories at restaurants that would reduce the likelihood that children would be served too much when they dine out. We found that portions of a la carte items offered on kids' menus averaged 147% more calories than the portions recommended by the panel, with hundreds of single servings exceeding 600 calories, the amount recommended as a maximum for an entire children's meal. Expert panel members recommended that single servings of entrees not exceed 300 calories, fried potatoes not exceed 100 calories, and desserts not exceed 150 calories on kids' menus. Restaurants should revise their portions for children and downsize them to match with recommendations that will reduce the risk that children will be served too much. The current kid's menu offerings are likely to be partly responsible for childhood obesity. New guidelines offer reasonable benchmarks for food service to children.

Moving Beyond Screen Time C onversations about what constitutes \" developmentally appropriate \" use of technology in early childhood education (ECE) have, to date, focused largely on a single, blunt measure—screen time—that fails to capture important nuances, such as what type of media a child is accessing and whether technology use is taking place solo or with peers. Using screen time as the primary measure of developmentally appropriate use has become increasingly inappropriate, as new technologies are ever more rapidly introduced and integrated into all aspects of life. In this policy brief, we challenge the traditional emphasis on screen time and discuss how to move toward a more comprehensive definition of developmentally appropriate technology use for young children.
