Avec l'emergence de plates-formes distribuees tres heterogenes, dynamiques et a large echelle, la necessite d'un moyen de les programmer efficacement et de les gerer est apparu. Le concept de l'informatique autonomique propose de creer des systemes auto-geres c'est-a-dire des systemes qui sont conscients de leurs composants et de leur environnement, et peuvent se configurer, s'optimiser, se reparer et se proteger. Dans le cadre de la realisation de tels systemes, la programmation declarative, dont l'objectif est de faciliter la tâche du programmeur en separant le controle de la logique du calcul, a retrouve beaucoup d'interet ces derniers temps. En particulier, la programmation a base de des regles est consideree comme un modele prometteur dans cette quete d'abstractions de programmation adequates pour ces plates-formes. Cependant, bien que ces modeles gagnent beaucoup d'attention, ils creent une demande pour des outils generiques capables de les executer a large echelle. Le modele de programmation chimique, qui a ete concu suivant la metaphore chimique, est un modele de programmation a bas de regles et d'ordre superieur, avec une execution non-deterministe, ou les regles sont appliquees de facon concurrente sur un multi ensemble de donnees. Dans cette these, nous proposons la conception, le developpement et l'experimentation d'un intergiciel distribue pour l'execution de programmes chimique sur des plates-formes a large echelle et generiques. L'architecture proposee combine une couche de communication pair-a-pair avec un protocole de capture atomique d'objets sur lesquels les regles doivent etre appliquees, et un systeme efficace de detection de terminaison. Nous decrivons le prototype d'intergiciel mettant en oeuvre cette architecture. En s'appuyant sur son deploiement sur une plate-forme experimentale a large echelle, nous presentons les resultats de performance, qui confirment les complexites analytiques obtenues et montrons experimentalement la viabilite d'un tel modele de programmation.

Chemical Computing for Distributed Systems: Algorithms and Implementation

L'apprehension de la complexite logique en mathematique offre une
longue tradition de mise en place de modeles pour des logiques
complexes obtenus par extension de modeles pour des logiques plus
simples, comme c'est le cas pour la construction de faisceaux. En
informatique, cette demarche a un pendant dual qui consiste a donner
du sens a des langages complexes via une phase de compilation vers des
langages plus simples.

Dans ce manuscrit, nous montrons en quoi l'approche par compilation
fait aussi sens en logique, via l'isomorphisme de Curry-Howard, et est
en fait plus precise que l'approche par extension de modele car elle
prend en compte le calcul. Pour illustrer ce propos, nous donnons des
exemples de transformation de programmes en theorie des types, avec
une application a l'assistant de preuve Coq, et dans une moindre
mesure en programmation distribuee.

Managing Logical and Computational Complexity using Program Transformations

Distributed applications are challenging to program because they have to deal with a plethora of concerns, including synchronization, locality, replication, security and fault tolerance. Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a paradigm that promotes better modularity by providing means to encapsulate crosscutting concerns in entities called aspects. Over the last years, a number of distributed aspect-oriented programming languages and systems have been proposed, illustrating the benefits of AOP in a distributed setting. Chemical calculi are particularly well-suited to formally specify the behavior of concurrent and distributed systems. The join calculus is a functional name-passing calculus, with both distributed and object-oriented extensions. It is used as the basis of concurrency and distribution features in several mainstream languages like C# (Polyphonic C#, now C
 $$\omega $$
 ), OCaml (JoCaml), and Scala Joins. Unsurprisingly, practical programming in the join calculus also suffers from modularity issues when dealing with crosscutting concerns. We propose the aspect join calculus, an aspect-oriented and distributed variant of the join calculus that addresses crosscutting and provides a formal foundation for distributed AOP. We develop a minimal aspect join calculus that allows aspects to advise chemical reactions. We show how to deal with causal relations in pointcuts and how to support advanced customizable aspect weaving semantics. We also provide the foundation for a decentralized distributed aspect weaving architecture. The semantics of the aspect join calculus is given by a chemical operational semantics. We give a translation of the aspect join calculus into the core join calculus, and prove this translation correct by a bisimilarity argument. This translation is used to implement Aspect JoCaml on top of JoCaml.

Chemical foundations of distributed aspects

Chemical computing was initially proposed as a paradigm capturing the essence of parallel programs. Within such a model, a program is envisioned as a solution of information-carrying molecules, that, at run time, collide non-deterministically to produce new information. Such a paradigm allowed the programmers to focus on the logic of the problem to be solved in parallel, without having to worry about the implementation's considerations. Throughout the years, the model has been enriched with various features related to program structure, control and practicability. More importantly, the model has recently been raised to the higher order, increasing again its expressiveness. With the rise of service-oriented computing, such models have recently regained a lot of interest. They have been shown to provide adequate abstractions to enhance service-oriented architectures with autonomic properties such as self-adaptation, self-healing, or self-organisation. However, the deployment of chemical programs over large-scale, distributed platforms is still a widely open problem, hindering the model to be leveraged in practice. This paper studies the possibility of building a distributed execution environment for chemical programs, to which end different approaches are discussed. Firstly, the paper envisions such a platform based on the distributed shared memory model to implement this solution. Such an approach leads to several issues that prevented us to finalise this approach and led to the exploration of a message-passing-based solution. Thus, secondly, and more importantly, a generic peer-to-peer-based runtime model is proposed.
