The science of quantum information has arisen over the last two decades centered on the manipulation of individual quanta of information, known as quantum bits or qubits. Quantum computers, quantum cryptography, and quantum teleportation are among the most celebrated ideas that have emerged from this new field. It was realized later on that using continuous-variable quantum information carriers, instead of qubits, constitutes an extremely powerful alternative approach to quantum information processing. This review focuses on continuous-variable quantum information processes that rely on any combination of Gaussian states, Gaussian operations, and Gaussian measurements. Interestingly, such a restriction to the Gaussian realm comes with various benefits, since on the theoretical side, simple analytical tools are available and, on the experimental side, optical components effecting Gaussian processes are readily available in the laboratory. Yet, Gaussian quantum information processing opens the way to a wide variety of tasks and applications, including quantum communication, quantum cryptography, quantum computation, quantum teleportation, and quantum state and channel discrimination. This review reports on the state of the art in this field, ranging from the basic theoretical tools and landmark experimental realizations to the most recent successful developments.

We prove that Gaussian operations are of no use for protecting Gaussian states against Gaussian errors in quantum communication protocols. Specifically, we introduce a new quantity characterizing any single-mode Gaussian channel, called entanglement degradation, and show that it cannot decrease via Gaussian encoding and decoding operations only. The strength of this no-go theorem is illustrated with some examples of Gaussian channels.

In quantum information processing and quantum computing protocols the carrier of information is a quantum system and information is encoded in the state of a quantum system. After processing the information it has to be read out what is equivalent to determining the final state of the system. When the possible final states are not orthogonal this is a highly nontrivial task that constitutes the general area of what is known as quantum state discrimination. It consists in finding measurement schemes that, according to some figure of merit, will determine the state of the system. Optimized measurement schemes often lead to generalized measurements (Positive Operator Valued Measures [POVMs]). In this tutorial review we illustrate the power of the POVM concept on examples relevant to applications in quantum cryptography. In order to keep the flow of the presentation we give a brief introduction to the quantum theory of measurements, including generalized measurements (POVMs), in the Appendices.

Discrimination of quantum states

Quantum metrology utilizes nonclassical resources, such as entanglement or squeezed light, to realize sensors whose performance exceeds that afforded by classical-state systems. Environmental loss and noise, however, easily destroy nonclassical resources and, thus, nullify the performance advantages of most quantum-enhanced sensors. Quantum illumination (QI) is different. It is a robust entanglement-enhanced sensing scheme whose 6 dB performance advantage over a coherent-state sensor of the same average transmitted photon number survives the initial entanglement's eradication by loss and noise. Unfortunately, an implementation of the optimum quantum receiver that would reap QI's full performance advantage has remained elusive, owing to its having to deal with a huge number of very noisy optical modes. We show how sum-frequency generation (SFG) can be fruitfully applied to optimum multimode Gaussian-mixed-state discrimination. Applied to QI, our analysis and numerical evaluations demonstrate that our SFG receiver saturates QI's quantum Chernoff bound. Moreover, augmenting our SFG receiver with a feedforward (FF) mechanism pushes its performance to the Helstrom bound in the limit of low signal brightness. The FF-SFG receiver, thus, opens the door to optimum quantum-enhanced imaging, radar detection, state and channel tomography, and communication in practical Gaussian-state situations.

Optimum Mixed-State Discrimination for Noisy Entanglement-Enhanced Sensing

Free space QKD over an atmospheric channel was demonstrated in 1996 for the first time [1]. Since then, several prepare-and-measure and entanglement-based schemes have been implemented (for a detailed overview, see [2]). All of these systems use single-photon detectors, and therefore have to employ spatial, spectral and/or temporal filtering in order to reduce background light. In our system, we use an alternative approach: with the help of a bright local oscillator (LO), we perform homodyne measurements on weak coherent polarization states [3].

Experimental Noiseless Filtering of Continuous-Variable Quantum Information

Partial measurements play an important role in several quantum information protocols with discrete and continuous variables such as state generation and cloning. Here we report on distillation of entanglement in the presence of non-Gaussian noise.

Partial Measurement Based Quantum Operations

In this paper, we consider the process of filtering non-Gaussian noise from binary coherent states using two different measurement methods: homodyne detection and on/off detection. Characteristics of homodyne and on/off detection in such a filter are compared and the optimal device is discussed. The performance of the protocol was characterized by measuring the signal state probability before and after filtration. We also measured the success probability (that is, the probability for a positive filter output) as well as the filter sensitivity for extremely weak signal states. All these results will be presented.

Noiseless Filtering of non-Gaussian Noise from Continuous-Variable Quantum Information

Amplification, cloning, quantum teleportation and telecloning are all related quantum information protocols which may benefit from measurement based feed forward strategies. Further following this approach leads to partial recovery of quantum states after having passed through a channel with non-Gaussian noise.
