The role of macrophages in the uptake of endotoxin by the mouse liver.
Nikolaus Freudenberg,Piotraschke J,Chris Galanos,C. Sorg,Askaryar Fa,Klosa B,H. U. Usener,Marina A. Freudenberg +7 more
TL;DR: The results show that in normal B10.D2 mice the liver macrophages constitute a heterogeneous population of cells which, depending on their state of differentiation, are distinguished by their differential distribution in the liver acinus and by their ability to phagocytose latex.

Function and "homing" of the lung macrophages - I. Evidence of functional heterogeneity of mobile cells of the murine lung parenchyma in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)
Nikolaus Freudenberg,K. Konarske,Urs Riede,R. Lamers,S. Zeller,G. Hämmerling,C. Sorg,H. U. Usener,T. Katschinski,Chris Galanos,Marina A. Freudenberg +10 more
TL;DR: The principal finding was that BAL cells are functionally heterogeneous, which shows that the lung, as indicated by BAL cells, has at its disposal a highly developed mobile cellular defence mechanism, of which the numerically dominant component is the macrophage population.
