A study of insecticides use and application pattern on major vegetable crops by the farmers of balodabazar - bhatapara district of chhattisgarh

The present investigation on economic empowerment of rural women of Assam through agro-based enterprises was carried out in three agro climatic zones. A multi stage purposive cum simple random sampling design was followed for sample selection. Two districts from each zone, namely Jorhat and Dibrugarh of Upper Brahmaputra Valley Zone, Udalguri and Darrang from North Bank Plain Zone and Kamrup (M) and Kamrup (R) of Lower Brahmaputra Valley Zone were selected randomly. All total 240 rural women from 24 villages of selected zones and who were mostly engaged in both vegetable cultivation and livestock rearing were included as respondents for the present study. Data collection was done by using structured interview schedule. The study revealed that majority of the rural women (52.92%) were of middle aged group, married (70.83%) and belonged to middle socio economic status (54.17%) group. Most of the rural women were involved independently in post harvest activities like cleaning and grading of harvested crop (88.33%), collection of seed from harvested crop (83.33%), transplanting, planting and sowing of seeds (74.76%) and application of manure (64.16%). Further they participated independently in different livestock activities such as providing daily feed (82.08%), cleaning of shed (79.16%), care of sick animal (74.58%) and taking care in vaccination of livestock (70.83%). Majority of the rural women had low level of knowledge in vegetable cultivation (44.32%) whereas 40.45% and 15.23% had medium and high level of knowledge respectively. In rearing of livestock majority of the rural women (42.77%) had medium level of knowledge followed by 39.49% and 17.74% had low and high level of knowledge. The major inhibiting factors which hampered in carrying out the agrobased enterprises were lack of technical person for immediate help and solution(2.56), weak marketing linkage(2.55) and sudden outbreak of diseases(2.53). Study also revealed that the agricultural projects planned and working on PPP mode for benefit of rural women increased their economic standard gradually. The five strategic options were drawn by introducing SWOC matrix analysis, namely i) provide specific training on the demand of the entrepreneurs on selected enterprises. ii) continuous assistance from extension personnel about production process and production management iii) develop linkages with input suppliers and markets iv) access to current and reliable market information and v) ensuring easy availability of low cost high yielding breed/variety.

Economic Empowerment of Rural Women of Assam through Agro-based Enterprises

Entrepreneurship is the process of identifying and utilizing available opportunities and resources to convert an idea into the form of a product or service to market. Entrepreneurial behavior is the package of personality characteristics and environmental factors related to dynamic agent of change for transforming physical, natural and human resources into corresponding production possibilities. Biggest banana producing countries are hardly involved in the international banana trade at all. Banana is the fourth most important staple crop in the world, critical for food security in many tropical countries. The highest consumption per person is in Uganda, where bananas are produced solely for local consumption. The objective of this study was to study the profile of banana growers. The present study was conducted in Ardhapur, Mudkhaed and Nanded tahsils of Nanded district from Marathwada region of Maharashtra state. The sample constituted 120 banana growers from three tahsils. Multistage sampling was used. Collected data were classified, tabulated and analyzed by using statistical methods like frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, correlation coefficient and multiple regressions. The rural women entrepreneurs were personally interviewed with the help of a specially designed interview schedule. The major findings of this study that, majority (67.50 percent) farmers medium farming experience, banana growers were educated to higher secondary school level (32.50 percent), family size of the farmer (62.50 percent), banana growers medium social participation (70.00 percent), mass media use (66.66 percent),farmers medium market orientation (72.50 percent),entrepreneurial behavior, majority of the growers medium level of innovativeness (63.33%), achievement motivation (67.50%), farm decision making ability (60.00%), risk taking ability (61.67%), information seeking behaviour (71.67%), leadership ability (65.83%) and Cosmopoliteness (74.16%). medium entrepreneurial behavior (45.00 percent). Little more than two third (67.50 percent) of the banana growers were medium level Entrepreneurial Behavior Index (EBI). The variables namely education, land holding, family size, occupation, annual income, faming experience in banana cultivation, mass media use, social participation, economic motivation and market orientation were found important in influencing the entrepreneurial behaviour of the banana growers. The coefficient of correlation the selected variables viz., education, family size, annual income, social participation, mass media use, economic motivation and market orientation had positive and highly significant relationship with their entrepreneurial behavior. Also independent variables of farming experience, occupation and land holding had positive significant relationship with their entrepreneurial behavior. The value of coefficient of multiple regressions (R2) in this case was 0.540 indicating thereby, that 54.00 percent variation in the entrepreneurial behaviour of the banana growers was explained by the ten independent variables selected for the study.

A study on entrepreneurial behaviour of tomato grower's in Sehore block of Sehore district (M.P.)

In Assam, nearly 60 per cent of tribal people are estimated to be involved in vegetable cultivation and about 70 per cent of tribal farmers are involved in growing vegetables in Jorhat district (DAO, Jorhat). But commercialization on a full scale is yet to begin and there is tremendous potential of entrepreneurship development in this region in vegetable cultivation with efforts of extension agencies and proper research. Therefore, a comprehensive study was carried out in Jorhat district of Assam in the year 2013 with a view to find out the entrepreneurial behavior of tribal winter vegetable growers and their relationship with socio-economic characteristics. Purposive and random sampling techniques were used for the selection of respondents. Total 120 respondents were selected for the study. Data was collected by administering a structured schedule. The study revealed that 41.66% of the vegetable growers belonged to young age (Between 18-35 years). Majority (52.50%) of the respondents had education up to higher secondary level. Majority (50.84%) of the respondents belonged to a medium sized family, possessed small sized operational land holdings (37.50%). The study also revealed that majority (51.67%) of the respondents had income ranging between Rs. 25001 to Rs.50000 and medium level of extension contact (70.83%). The results further revealed that more than half of tribal winter vegetable growers (63.34%) had medium level of entrepreneurial behavior in the district. A positive and significant relationship was found between entrepreneurial behavior and education level, size of the family, size of operational land holding and annual family income of the respondents in the district. The four components viz., education, family size, size of operational land holding and annual family income were found to be the most contributing factors for entrepreneurial behavior.

Applications of Advanced Geospatial Technology for Expansion of Area under Horticultural Crops in North Eastern Region of India

Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) is an important and versatile tree crop with diverse uses, supporting the livelihood of many farm families in the primary sector, grown in many states of India. Coconuts are known for their great versatility as evidenced by many traditional uses ranging from food to cosmetics. Assamese people prepare different types of edible items from coconut fruit in many festivals. Now, the majority of the coconut growers in Assam were facing the problems of shortage of skilled labour for nut harvesting. The traditional method of harvesting the nuts is quite risky and accident-prone. To overcome this problem, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barpeta, Assam conducted training for unemployed rural youths in collaboration with Coconut Development Board, Guwahati. The objectives of the FoCT training were to impart training to a group of unemployed youths in developing their technical skills for harvesting of coconuts, to mitigate the problem of non-availability of coconut tree climbers for coconut harvesting. The present study was conducted at KVK, Barpeta (Assam) with an attempt to know the effect of friends of coconut tree (FoCT) training on the adoption of coconut tree climbing devices. For the present study, 40 trainees were selected purposively. The majority 45% of the trainees use the coconut climbing device only for plucking of their own coconut tree followed by 35% who use the coconut climbing device as a source of income generation and 20% of trainees do not at all use the device. Among the two methods of climbing, the advanced method of coconut tree climber takes less time (3-5 minutes) to climb than the traditional method (7-10 minutes). On the other hand, among the two methods of climbing, the advanced method of coconut tree climber harvested a greater number of nuts and many numbers of harvesting trees over the traditional method.

EFFECT OF FoCT TRAINING ON ADOPTION OF COCONUT TREE CLIMBING DEVICE FOR HARVESTING COCONUTS

Five Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) of Assam, viz., Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Baksa, Udalguri and Karbi Anglong were purposively selected for the study on the effectiveness of Skill Training of Rural Youth (S.T.R.Y.) programme implemented by KVKs in Assam, as it was conducted through these five KVKs in the first phase. A sample size of 120 respondents was selected by using purposive sampling technique and by taking 80% of the trainees trained under each of the selected KVKs. The data were collected by means of personal interview schedule and through personal observation for critical skills. The statistical tools, viz., frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient, t-test and chi-square test were employed for analyzing the collected data. Majority (62.50%) of the trained youths had medium level of training effectiveness. Out of ten independent variables considered under study, six variables, viz., annual income, achievement motivation, learning motivation, economic motivation, motivation to transfer learning and self-efficacy were found to have a significant and positive relationship with training effectiveness.
