TL;DR: Pet ownership in early life did not appear to either increase or reduce the risk of asthma or allergic rhinitis symptoms in children aged 6–10, and there was some evidence for an association between ownership of furry pets during the first 2 years of life and reduced likelihood of becoming sensitized to aero-allergens.

Simona Pichini,X. Basagana,Roberta Pacifici,Oscar Garcia,C Puig,Oriol Vall,Jessica Harris,Piergiorgio Zuccaro,Jordi Segura,Jordi Sunyer +9 more
TL;DR: Cotinine in cord serum cotinine appeared to be the most adequate biomarker of fetal exposure to smoking at the end of pregnancy, distinguishing not only active smoking from passive smoking, but also exposure to ETS from nonexposure.
Umbilical cord blood cotinine and smoking during pregnancy.
TL;DR: It is believed that the accurate assessment of fetal exposure to smoking through the objective measure of a biomarker could be of major importance in cohort studies, in which the ultimate goal is monitoring passive exposure to tobacco smoke and the investigation of the effects of prenatal and postnatal environmental exposures to pollutants, including tobacco smoke.
