A new neural network approach including first guess for retrieval of atmospheric water vapor, cloud liquid water path, surface temperature, and emissivities over land from satellite microwave observations
TL;DR: In this article, a neural network approach is developed that uses a first-guess approach to retrieve the surface skin temperature, the integrated water vapor content, the cloud liquid water path and the microwave surface emissivities between 19 and 85 GHz over land from SSM/I observations.

An Evaluation of Microwave Land Surface Emissivities Over the Continental United States to Benefit GPM-Era Precipitation Algorithms
Ralph Ferraro,Christa D. Peters-Lidard,C. Hernandez,F. J. Turk,Filipe Aires,C. Prigent,Xin Lin,Sid-Ahmed Boukabara,Fumie A. Furuzawa,Kaushik Gopalan,Kenneth W. Harrison,Fatima Karbou,Li Li,Chuntao Liu,Hirohiko Masunaga,L. Moy,Sarah Ringerud,Gail Skofronick-Jackson,Yudong Tian,Nai-Yu Wang +19 more
TL;DR: The results demonstrate that while the emissivity structure can be fairly well characterized for certain surface types, there are other more complex surfaces where the underlying variability is more than can be captured with the PMW channels and suggest that physical retrievals are feasible over vegetated land during the warm seasons.

Sea-surface emissivity parametrization from microwaves to millimetre waves
TL;DR: In this paper, a parametrization of the sea-surface emissivity from microwave to sub-millimeter waves (TESSEM2) is proposed for the European operational meteorological satellite (EUMETSAT Polar System-Second Generation (EPS-SG)).

Surface Emissivity at Microwaves to Millimeter Waves over Polar Regions: Parameterization and Evaluation with Aircraft Experiments
Dié Wang,C. Prigent,L. Kilic,Stuart Fox,C. Harlow,Carlos Jimenez,Filipe Aires,Christopher Grassotti,Fatima Karbou +8 more
TL;DR: The Tool to Estimate Land Surface Emissivity from Microwave to Submillimeter Waves (TELSEM2) as mentioned in this paper is linked to a climatology of monthly emissivity estimates and provides a parameterization of the surface emissivities up to 700 GHz.

Observing ice clouds in the submillimeter spectral range: the CloudIce mission proposal for ESA's Earth Explorer 8
Stefan A. Buehler,Eric Defer,F. Evans,Salomon Eliasson,Jana Mendrok,Patrick Eriksson,Clare Lee,C. Jimenez,C. Prigent,Susanne Crewell,Yasuko Kasai,Ralf Bennartz,Albin J. Gasiewski +12 more
TL;DR: It is shown that a robust understanding of the radiative properties of cloud ice in the millimeter/submillimeter spectral range is shown, and that a proven toolbox of retrieval algorithms to work with these data are shown.
