Synthesis of surface molecular imprinted TiO2/graphene photocatalyst and its highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of target pollutant under visible light irradiation

Sonochemical oxidation of organic pollutants in an aqueous environment is considered to be a green process. This mode of degradation of organic pollutants in an aqueous environment is considered to render reputable outcomes in terms of minimal chemical utilization and no need of extreme physical conditions. Indiscriminate discharge of toxic organic pollutants in an aqueous environment by anthropogenic activities has posed major health implications for both human and aquatic lives. Hence, numerous research endeavours are in progress to improve the efficiency of degradation and mineralization of organic contaminants. Being an extensively used advanced oxidation process, ultrasonic irradiation can be utilized for complete mineralization of persistent organic pollutants by coupling/integrating it with homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalytic processes. In this regard, scientists have reported on sonophotocatalysis as an effective strategy towards the degradation of many toxic environmental pollutants. The combined effect of sonolysis and photocatalysis has been proved to enhance the production of high reactive-free radicals in aqueous medium which aid in the complete mineralization of organic pollutants. In this manuscript, we provide an overview on the ultrasound-based hybrid technologies for the degradation of organic pollutants in an aqueous environment.

Textile wastewaters contain refractory dyes that cause pollution and socio-economic issues, thus calling for efficient remediation techniques such as photocatalysis. We review the fabrication, functionalization, performance and limitations of doped catalysts for degrading and mineralizing dyes. We present developments in photocatalyst immobilization and photocatalytic reactor design. Methods such as microwave irradiation, sonication and use of ionic liquids are emerging for the preparation of doped photocatalysts. Whilst single-dye systems have been extensively studied, there is limited knowledge on multiple-dye systems. Immobilization of photocatalysts is gaining popularity for large-scale application, but faces issues of erosion, corrosion, mechanical strength and structure integrity. Ecotoxicological studies are required in real environments to validate the potential applications of nanostructured doped photocatalysts.

Fabrication, functionalization and performance of doped photocatalysts for dye degradation and mineralization: a review

Sonochemical degradation at 278 kHz of naphthol blue black (NBB, a diazo dye widely used in the textile and soap industries) has been investigated. The effects of different parameters and the influence of mineral matrix (bicarbonates ions and phosphates ions) on its sonodegradation have been evaluated. The influence of parameters linked to the pollutant (concentration: 0.50–97.32 μmol L−1), to the technique (power: 20–100 W) and to the natural medium (pH 3–10.8; bicarbonate ions; phosphate ions) has been studied. The decolourisation rate of NBB increases when substrate concentration or ultrasound power increases. Bicarbonate ions at natural medium concentration (2.97 mmol L−1) have a positive influence for low pollutant concentration (0.5–2.0 μmol L−1), due to carbonate radicals. Phosphate ions may also improve the kinetics, but this effect depends on the pH domains. Furthermore, acid pH (pH 3) has a positive effect for high pollutant concentration, whereas basic pH (pH 10.8) has a positive influence at low pollutant concentration.
