The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is described. The detector operates at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It was conceived to study proton-proton (and lead-lead) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV (5.5 TeV nucleon-nucleon) and at luminosities up to 10(34)cm(-2)s(-1) (10(27)cm(-2)s(-1)). At the core of the CMS detector sits a high-magnetic-field and large-bore superconducting solenoid surrounding an all-silicon pixel and strip tracker, a lead-tungstate scintillating-crystals electromagnetic calorimeter, and a brass-scintillator sampling hadron calorimeter. The iron yoke of the flux-return is instrumented with four stations of muon detectors covering most of the 4 pi solid angle. Forward sampling calorimeters extend the pseudo-rapidity coverage to high values (vertical bar eta vertical bar <= 5) assuring very good hermeticity. The overall dimensions of the CMS detector are a length of 21.6 m, a diameter of 14.6 m and a total weight of 12500 t.

The CMS experiment at the CERN LHC

CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) is a general-purpose detector designed to run in mid-2005 at the highest luminosity at the LHC at CERN. Its distinctive features include a 6 m free bore diameter, 12.5 m long, 4 T superconducting solenoid enclosed inside a 10,000 tonne return yoke. The magnet will be assembled and tested on the surface by the end of 2003 before being transferred by heavy lifting means to a 90 m deep underground experimental area. The design and construction of the magnet is a 'common project' of the CMS Collaboration. It is organized by a CERN based group with strong technical and contractual participation by CEA Saclay, ETH Zurich, Fermilab Batavia IL, INFN Geneva, ITEP Moscow, University of Wisconsin and CERN. The return yoke, 21 m long and 14 m in diameter, is equivalent to 1.5 m of saturated iron interleaved with four muon stations. The yoke and the vacuum tank are being manufactured. The indirectly-cooled, pure-aluminium-stabilized coil is made up from five modules internally wound with four layers of a 20 kA mechanically reinforced conductor. The contracts for the conductor and the outer cryogenics have just been awarded, and the remaining coil parts, including winding, are being tendered worldwide in industry. The project is described, with emphasis on the present status.

This dissertation describes a number of searches for yet undiscovered particles predicted by theories beyond the standard model of particle physics. The searches have been carried out with 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at an unprecedented center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 13 TeV, recorded in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. New particles are assumed to be produced either via the strong or the electroweak interaction in the scope of the minimally supersymmetric standard model. In this document, the examined final states either contain a pair of electrons or muons of the same electric charge or more than two leptons, also including hadronic tau lepton decays. As known standard model processes are expected to contribute at low rate to either of these final states, the searches are sensitive to possible new physics phenomena. The dissertation includes a general introduction to the theoretical and experimental setup, followed by an extensive review of the search strategy and estimation of background processes. Results of the analyses are presented as comparisons of observed to predicted number of events in dedicated search regions, and are interpreted in the scope of the supersymmetric models. The results obtained in the search for electroweak superparticle production are combined with those from other searches carried out at CMS in 2016. Supersymmetric particles produced via the strong interaction are excluded up to masses of 1.6 TeV, which is compatible to what has been achieved by other searches conducted at CMS and ATLAS in the same period of time. The obtained results pose the most stringent limit on electroweak superpartner production mechanisms to date, ranging between 500 GeV and 1.1 TeV depending on the model

Advances in superconducting magnets for high energy and astroparticle physics

The 4 T, 12.5 m long, 6 m bore diameter superconducting solenoid for the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment at LHC will be the largest and the most powerful superconducting solenoid ever built. Part of the CMS design is based on that of previous large superconducting solenoids-the use of a high purity aluminium stabilized conductor, a compact impregnated winding with indirect cooling and quench back protection process. However, the dimensions and the performances of this solenoid have imposed solutions which are more than extrapolations of the previous ones : the use of a mechanically reinforced conductor and a five module winding, each module being made of four layers, internally wound. This design, which is now frozen, relies on numerous magnetic, mechanical and thermal calculations, on various experimental tests (characterization of structural and insulating materials, electrical joints...) and specific mock-ups. Two pre-industrialization programs, concerning the conductor and the winding process have also been carried out with industrial partners to support the foreseen solutions. Both the final design and the experimental results obtained to validate this design are presented in this paper.
